Chapter 136. A lie to Lyle.
Chapter 136: 136. A lie to Lyle.
Neriah knew her husband was no fool and since he was going on a journey, he must have placed someone to watch her every move since she had a history of meeting her lover. She had confirmed this when she had personally gone to meet the King’s cloth maker because she didn’t want her gift being exposed.
Now she was grateful for choosing that gift, at least they would not suspect her too much if she said she was going out to meet the cloth maker yet again. She knew they would still follow her in the shadows like they had been doing, but she also knew they would have let their guard down at this point.
That was why she visited the cloth maker first and slipped out through the back door, with the excuse that there were some noble ladies outside the front door who were trying to talk to her and she was in no mood to chat.
Eventually, she reached the bookstore and after much thought, she walked in.
The young blonde human boy at the counter knew who she was and nodded to her, indicating that the person she was here to meet was inside. She walked round the counter and went through a door. The door led to a small thin hallway, at her left side was another door.
She gulped down hard before opening the door and she saw him standing there, the light from the lantern sparkled on his blonde hair and his face brightened up at the sight of her.
"Ah, my love." He walked up to her and instantly embraced her. Neriah’s hand hesitantly held onto his cloth as though she was scared to hug him with as much enthusiasm as he hugged her.
"I have missed you these past months." He said and as he broke the hug, he reached for her lips and kissed her. His kiss was deep and hungry and Neriah tried to kiss him back but it left a bitter taste in her tongue. Her face cringed as he continued to kiss her and she tried to follow.
There was a time when the mere brush of his finger made her blush and shudder with immense joy and pleasure but at that very moment, even though she was wrapped deeply in his arms, and his tongue was deep inside her, she felt close to... Nothing.
No, actually, she felt something... she could not put a word to it. But it felt as though she was wearing new shoes and then stepped her foot into a pile of cow dung. Was there a word to explain how a person would feel if something of such was to happen?
If yes, then that was what she was feeling as he kissed her and she didn’t like the feeling, neither could she condone it anymore so, "L_Lyle, Lyle please stop." She said and pushed him gently. But he persisted and kissed her harder.
"Lyle!" She yelled through his kisses and forced herself away from him. When she saw the shocked reaction upon his face, she stuttered, "I_ I am not well." She lied.
"Please tell me why you called me. You said you had something to say. I cannot stay for long, for I am not well. I had a fever up until this morning." Why was she lying? Neriah wondered. She never lied to Lyle before.
"Oh,forgive me my love. I, I was just so happy to see you." He said and gently pulled her hand to sit on a chair.
She sat and as though she was truly impatient, she asked again. "Lyle, why have you asked to see me?"
"Oh, I just wanted to know why you failed to include a certain detail in your last letter." He said and for a second, Neriah could swear she saw something dark flash in his eyes. It was like a mask had fallen and something wicked had been revealed underneath it, but then the mask was quickly picked up and worn over the face again.
That thing that looked like hostility had disappeared. But still... It made her cold.
"W_what are you talking about?" Neriah asked.
"I am talking about the fact that the last date we exchanged messages happened to be on the same date prince Barak left the capital." Neriah’s hands clenched unto the skirt of her dress and she sucked in her breath and continued to listen.
"You did not mention it in your letter. If you had, then we could have gone and laid an ambush for him. We could have had him then. So why, Neriah, why did you not include that detail?"
Again, she saw something flash in his eyes like anger, not just mere anger but one that was very wicked. But again, it vanished.
It was true, she had thought of adding that fact to the message, in fact she had written a letter that contained that information, but alas, she could not send it and ended up creating another note that stated that she was yet to get any information on her husband and had burned the other letter that held the actual information she was withholding.
Why had she done that then? She knew the right thing was to tell Kyle about Barak’s whereabouts, but when the time came to do it, she had withheld the information. Why did she do it? More importantly, what was she going to tell this man?
"I_ I had no idea he was leaving." A lie. A big fat lie! "He did not mention it. I_I just woke up and found out he was gone. When I received your letter, I did not know he was going on such a long travel or I would have included it in the letter I sent you. I only thought he was out on one of his usual rounds."
Lords! She was a liar! The more the lies escaped her loss the more believable she sounded. She even amazed herself at how she was able to lie in such a situation.
But the big question remained, why was she lying to Lyle? Why was the situation suddenly turning around? Barak is the one who is supposed to receive all her lies because he was the one she hated and Lyle being the love of her life was the one who always got the truth. So why?
Why in the world was the entire thing toppled? She was mixing her men up!
