Chapter 69: I guess, she is yours already.
~ Back in the Ice Land
Twilight cast a dim glow over the land where its thick layers of snow rested, untouched by warmth. The sky was heavily clouded, a silent omen that a storm was surging toward them.
"Alpha Xander, move the camp to this village, and don’t let any vampire cross the lake," Kai ordered as he walked through the village, checking every single house. Shadow could sense fear and hear the faint rhythm of a heartbeat, but something kept blocking the scent of a living person.
"Yes, Your Grace." Xander pivoted and rushed to his reapers, commanding them to move before the storm crashed down on them.
"Why are we checking every house?" Axe asked.
"Because I can feel someone alive but can’t pinpoint the source. Is Agara still tending to the girl?"
Axe sighed. "Yes, she hasn’t woken up yet, and that guy has an immense obsession with not letting a single life slip away." He stopped in front of a small wooden cottage and sniffed. "I smell too much garlic here. This is gross, I hate garlic!"
Kai narrowed his eyes and strode inside, searching through every basket until he stopped before one, pushing it aside.
The heartbeat quickened, fear intensifying in the air as he uncovered a small door on the floor. Kai opened it, revealing a cramped space, just enough to fit a small child. A frail boy flinched at the sight of him.
"Shush, don’t scream! I’m not gonna hurt you, okay?" Kai stretched out his arm. The child shrank back, crouching and hugging his knees even tighter.
"Look at me," Kai demanded, but the boy only trembled harder, avoiding his gaze.
"My mom is dead."
Kai stilled, his expression went blank however, the power of those words, laced with immense grief, clawed through his chest. He had long since forgotten this feeling, but now that Shadow was awake, he could feel it again. A torturous gift, to endure the suffering of others as if it were his own, or take it from them if he willed to.
"I’m sorry we arrived late. But I promise to take you somewhere safe."
The child lifted his tear-streaked face. Dark circles clung to his eyes, proof that sleep had eluded him. His thin frame spoke of malnourishment.
"Are you hungry? We have food."
The boy’s dim eyes flickered with eagerness before he gave a small nod.
Kai gestured to his outstretched hand. "Come on. Let’s get you something to eat. It’s freezing here."
A frail, trembling arm reached out, and Kai smoothly pulled him up. The child immediately wrapped his arms around Kai’s neck, burying his face into the hollow of his throat.
Kai’s eyes widened.
This... this was the same reaction he had when his father had found him in that filthy cave. His gaze darkened as he turned. "Axe, give him food and warm clothes."
Gamma Axe was stunned—not only by His Highness suddenly turning so soft but also by the fact that they had just found a child who had slipped past the Lord Vampire’s sight.
After feeding the boy and taking him to the large house they had chosen as a meeting place, Axe pulled out a chair for him and made him sit down on his lap. He couldn’t believe himself hugging a little human.
"Okay, little one. Tell us how you managed to escape the vampires."
The boy’s eyes welled with tears. A lump formed in his throat, and everyone could see he was about to cry out loud. But he sniffed, scrunching his tiny nose.
"Mommy said I’m little, and garlic can keep me safe from those demons."
Kai raised a brow. That made sense now. Lutherieth could never detect the scent of garlic, and his demon had inherited this trait from him. The basket had been placed in that small space, masking the human scent. Good to know.
After devising a strategy, Kai ordered Alpha Xander to send a man to inform the human legion so they could ambush the vampires.
Later, he went to check on Agara but sensed a presence lurking in the shadows.
"Siamon, you’re late."
The butler strode toward him, glancing around. "I can smell Luther here. And Garlic on you. I hate garlic."
"I met him last night. He was talking about his bride," Kai muttered, skipping the second part, his blood simmering before he corrected himself, "My wife." His eyes flared with rage as he turned to Siamon, only to frown when the butler smirked.
Was this funny to him?
"I suppose she is yours already," Siamon mused.
Warmth crawled up Kai’s spine, an unfamiliar sensation he had never experienced before. What was it? Comfort? "What do you mean, she is mine?" His expression remained stony, hard.
"I’ll tell you. But first, please send Agara home."
"Why? We haven’t caught a vampire yet."
Siamon snorted. "You don’t need to."
He pointed at the chain in the corner he had emerged from. "I caught a wandering one a few miles away and chained it. I poisoned it with a bit of silver as Luna suggested, but it won’t last long."
Ren suggested? Was she worried?
"Go call Axe to put it in the cage. Then, come and report."
Kai strode to the small house and found Agara preparing a remedy.
"You should leave. Take her with you."
"You found a kid?"
"Yeah. Agara, you should leave. Take them to Thegara with you."
Agara shot him a grave glare. "These people don’t belong there. And you don’t get to tell me what I must do, cousin. Your brother is wreaking havoc upon these poor people because of your wife? Do you actually believe that? What the fuck is the real reason?"
"I don’t know what he wants. Maybe he wants to become another demon god."
Agara let out an exasperated sigh. "He wants to take everything you have, and something gave him the motive. Go to King Benkin. He’s hiding something."
"I’m heading there. But first, you need to leave."
Agara calmed, then nodded. "I need your wife to check on this girl. I’m not familiar with vampish fever, but she is. This girl might die if we don’t act now."
After convincing Agara to return with the humans and the vampire locked in an iron cage, Kai ordered Axe to stay with Alpha Xander and assist him, and sent an Omega soldier to carry the cage. He would not be heading to Thegara.
Siamon followed his master to a cave, a place where they could seal their words within the power of shadows, ensuring no one could overhear.
"Now, talk. What’s happening?"
"I searched every corner of the shadow world and finally found information about a prophecy."
Kai felt his stomach lurch. A prophecy... of what? That his wife belonged to Lutherieth?
