The Devil's Son and His Fated Bride
Chapter 43: We have you

Chapter 43: We have you

"Your Grace, we are here so you can now get some rest," the healer suggested while Ren completely ignored Kai. She was still mad at him for how he reacted toward her good intentions, as though she were a killer. She wasn’t sure which was worse, being labeled a betrayer or seeing him in such distress, unable to cope with his pain.

"Take care of him for me!" His eyes were wet and innocent when he asked this of Ren, but she refused to look up. His gaze was already a temptation for forgiveness. He must be punished.

"Healer Rigo, let’s give him the remedy. Butler Siamon will soon bring food. We must wake him up."

The healer raised his brow, unsure why she was repeating what they had already discussed. When His Grace sighed and strode outside, he grasped the point.

Sitting next to the bed, Ren checked the pulse. It was still shallow due to blood loss. She removed the clean cloth, pursed her lips, and acknowledged, "He kept the wound clean and quenched the fever."

The healer beamed. "His Highness raised Org and Rail; they are not like everybody else."

Well, that could explain why he was so agitated last night, but why had he taken his frustration out on her?

"Org might be unable to use his right arm for a while. He was lucky the knife didn’t hit his lungs or a vital organ."

Agara had questions since leaving the Room of the Gone, but he had refrained from asking. Now, he could no longer hold back.

"How did you find out the wound didn’t kill him? We have strong senses, yet we couldn’t hear his pulse."

Ren smiled. "My physician master used to study bodies and always summoned me when it was about poison. Whatever I know, I owe him. Some poisons show symptoms, but some don’t. Some cause contractions, making others believe their loved ones are gone. The pulse decreases so much that it becomes almost impossible to feel."

He put the vial down after forcing the bitter solution into Org’s mouth and closed it so he would swallow.

"You are so young to have studied corpses."

Ren’s eyes darkened. She knew that and had never gotten used to it. But it was her father’s demand that she use her intelligence to save more lives. To be useful not a burden.

"Unlike my sister, I wasn’t coddled. Expectations were higher for me as the eldest child."

She shouldn’t have said that, but who cared? That family of hers was nothing like what people presumed. They didn’t know how evil her stepmother was.

"How could you recognize the poison? It was mixed so masterfully that even I couldn’t detect it."

"Do you remember the bracelet that locked my power? It burned my wrist and left red scars, just like the knife that stabbed him. And guess what? The flesh in that area wasn’t dead or rotten. When I checked his tongue, I realized the poison hadn’t reached his heart yet because his body was still fighting it."

"Why are you... talking... about hard... things here?"

As they spoke, Org slowly opened his eyes. His breathing was still ragged, but he was awake, which meant his body had stabilized and begun healing.

"Sorry for disturbing your sleep, Gamma Orgeve. I’m quite talkative," Ren joked.

"Ah, I’m thirsty."

"Well, that’s normal. Here, take some water."

Healer Rigo helped him take a few sips, but Org coughed and spat them out. Ren immediately took out her handkerchief and wiped his mouth.

"Slow down. Your throat feels like a burning hell right now. I know," Ren suggested and sat back in the chair.

"Luna is right, don’t push yourself to heal faster. She brought you back from that fucking limbo you were dropped in. We thought you were dead. We almost..."

"Burned me," he finished.

Silence fell for a moment before Org panicked. "You didn’t inform my clan, did you?"

"No, we were about to send a white crow but waited because of her examination."

Ren was startled by how distressed he seemed. "Why are you so scared?"

"They... cast me out...when I was born because I was a gamma... not an alpha wolf. My King raised me," he caught his breath and added, "I don’t want them to see me die."

Wow. They had cast out an infant over such a trivial matter. This land had its own cruelty that she had yet to face.

"Oh, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have asked."

He shook his head and groaned as he tried to stretch. "I feel like I’ve been smashed under the feet of giants."

"Can you feel your right arm?" Ren asked.

"It’s itching and..."

A knock on the door interrupted him.

"Come in, please."

Siamon entered with Gloria, who carried a tray with a wooden bowl of broth on it.

"Let’s pray you’ve brought meat too," Org muttered.

Ren was amazed at his progress. The remedy seemed to work like magic on werewolves, accelerating the healing process.

"Eat this first, then feast like a beast at dinner. Tomorrow night, we have a celebration ahead of us. You can choke yourself with food then," Siamon grumbled.

After leaving the Gamma’s quarters, Ren saw Arkilla waiting outside, her face pale. "How is he?"

"Are you worried about him or me?" Ren jested.

Arkilla flushed and, with a shaky voice, said, "Both!"

"I see! Well, why didn’t you come to check on him?"

She shrugged. "Females aren’t allowed in the males’ quarters."

Ren snorted. She was as much in the female category as Gloria and this girl.

Gloria leaned in and whispered in Ren’s ear, "In case of lust and unwanted babies, you know, my lady?"

Her face was embarrassed as she said it, but someone had to.

Ren’s cheeks blushed. "Oh, I get it. That’s a good law, then." She made a face. "Let’s leave. By the way, Killa, he is fine. It will take time for his right arm to regain full strength, but in general, he is feeling better."

"Whoa, I’m glad we have you. Otherwise, we would have..." She swallowed the rest of her sinister words.
