Chapter 42: Savior

At the end of the narrowed pathway, they reached a circular hall, a venue surrounded by statues of old Fae gods. In the center lay a stone bed, its walls engraved with runes. Ren swallowed hard. Fae runes, they were engraved on each side.

A hole in the roof allowed light to pour onto Orgeve’s motionless body. Ren ascended the two steps and stood above the Reaper’s body as Siamon appeared beside her.

"Luna Ren, did you summon me?"

Healer Rigo and Gamma Rail emerged from another pathway.

"No, but I need you." She glanced at the bag in his hand. Kai had sent him to support her. "Where is His Highness?" she asked.

"Informants came from the village, and he went to check the reports. He’ll be here shortly," Rail answered as they stopped next to ’The Gone’s Last Bed.’

Ren’s heart filled with an inexplicable feeling. This dull, cold bed was like the last promise of death to those whose thread of life was about to be severed from this world.

Borrowing a small silver bar from the healer, Ren bent close to Org’s face. His lips were dark purple.

"It is definitely not wolfsbane," she noted, opening his mouth. His tongue was still red—which it shouldn’t be. His body was rigid and cold, but not the cold she had seen before. Back in Zillgaira, they had examined corpses in their lab. She knew how the dead looked. Though they had been strangers, her heart had always broken to see some die young for different reasons.

"I’ve checked, milady. It wasn’t wolfsbane."

She needed to check his brain function. "Yes, give me a small rubber hammer."

Healer Rigo understood what she was about to do but didn’t protest, watching her intently. Rail, however, was less patient.

"You’re not going to smash his head, are you?" His eyes were wide with horror.

"Of course not!" The thought disgusted Ren, twisting her stomach.

Handing the silver bar back to Healer Rigo, she stated, "The silver turned red. Mark this as our first finding."

He inspected the bar and frowned. Few poisons left such a trace, and as far as he knew, none of them were deadly. But then, realization struck him. His eyes widened in terror as he pushed Rail aside and moved to Org’s right knee, where Ren stood.

"This is impossible. He has no life signs."

Ren nodded and grabbed the hammer. "Break his knee. I’m not that strong, and I’ve never done it before." She hated what she was asking, but if he was alive and merely in a deep sleep, she would regret not trying for the rest of her life. Life, valuable or not, was not hers to judge.

"No!" Rail protested, but Siamon held him back, warning, "Don’t be an idiot. Our brother is alive."

Healer Rigo wasted no time, knowing that His Highness was watching from the shadows and might intervene. He grabbed the hammer and struck just above the kneecap, where it was most sensitive.

The ominous sound of bone breaking resonated in The Gone’s sanctuary, sending a storm through Ren’s stomach. However, the body’s reaction afterward filled her eyes with tears. To their astonishment, the broken bone began to heal, slow but enough to prove.

Tension and worry dissipated, and Ren swiftly rummaged through the healer’s bag for something to extract blood. Her gaze then shifted to Rail’s angry protruding fangs.

"Suck his blood," she ordered, pointing at the vein on Org’s neck. "Do it now, before the poison reaches his heart. Please."

Rail froze. He was a Gamma, and so was this Reaper. She didn’t want to risk asking the other two werewolves.

Butler Sia jolted Rail forward, pushing him closer. "Do it. He doesn’t have much time."

"They’ve mixed poison with cobalt. He can be saved if we remove the poisoned blood."

Rail shook his head, but a commanding voice from the darkness ordered, "Do whatever she asks, Rail." Kai stepped out, his eyes glimmering with menace. Ren could tell that if this failed, he would kill her.

Rail strode forward, breathing heavily as his mouth neared his brother’s neck.

"Forgive me, Org. I’ll kill that bitch myself. I promise you that."

"Spit the rotted blood until it turns red," Ren instructed.

He sank his fangs into Org’s vein, sucking and spitting the blood repeatedly until it turned liquid and ruby red. Then, he pulled away, clutching his mouth and darting out to vomit. His stomach burned like hell; the blood had tasted horrible.

Ren saw the cold leaving Org’s body, warmth taking its place. But her view was suddenly obstructed by her husband’s cloak. He wrapped Org’s body within it and picked him up.

"Prepare whatever can restore his stamina," Kai commanded the healer before vanishing swiftly, leaving Ren overwhelmed.

He could move at that speed? How?

Another question added to the countless ones in her mind, but Butler Sia pulled her from her reverie.

"Let’s take you to your chambers."

Ren frowned. "He is my patient. I diagnosed his problem, and I will help Healer Rigo prepare everything."

She followed the healer to the lab, where they worked tirelessly through the night. By morning, the medicines were ready. As they headed to the Gamma’s quarters on the left side of the castle, Ren felt the weight of admiration and expectation on her shoulders—and an equal amount of growing resentment.

Rail guarded the room, his face pale, his expression sickened by the memory of drinking the rotten blood.

"Take this. I made it for you." She handed him a vial from the wooden box in her hand. It contained a golden liquid.

Rail, not as cheerful as usual, forced a smirk. "Tell me, I’m, our Luna’s favorite person."

Ren giggled. "You are." She pointed at him. "Let’s check on our patient."

He stepped aside, opening the door. Inside, her husband sat in a chair next to the bed. His disheveled appearance and tousled hair told her he had not left the room all night.
