Chapter 209: Summon the demon god.

Chapter 209: Summon the demon god.

Ren bobbed her head faintly, struggling to breathe through the cramp. The pressure in her stomach was unbearable. She took a step back, then tore herself from Arkilla’s hold and ran behind a nearby boulder.

The sound of retching followed. Arkilla stood frozen, concerned, furrowing her brow.

Across the clearing, Calisa turned to Org, his eyes narrowing. "You saw that, didn’t you?"

Org gave a subtle nod. They both glanced at Ogain.

"You know what’s going on with our Queen," Calisa said, his tone sharp but low.

Ogain responded with a slow, exaggerated eye roll. He fluffed his feathers and turned his beak away with dramatic disinterest. No one would get the truth from him, not unless Ren allowed it.

Behind the rock, Ren leaned against the cold stone, wiping her mouth with a cloth. Her stomach twisted again, a burn crawling up her throat. She exhaled shakily.

Footsteps approached. Arkilla crouched beside her, gently rubbing circles on her back.

"Are you hiding something from me?" she asked softly, her voice calm and knowing.

Ren didn’t answer right away. The wind rustled the yellowed leaves nearby. Her fingers clutched the cloth, her eyes still wet from the strain.

’I’m not ready to tell them,’ she told herself.

Ren’s throat ached, heavy and tight. Her heart pounded so fiercely it felt like it might tear from her chest.

She opened her mouth, I’m going to have babies. But the words caught like thorns and refused to leave her. Arkilla was her sister, her protector, her friend, but she just couldn’t say it.

"I’m fine," she said instead, forcing a breath. "Maybe it’s just the pressure. Come on, we should head back before it gets dark."

She didn’t look at Arkilla. Lately, she’d been avoiding everyone’s eyes. It was too easy for people to see through her when they looked too closely, and she couldn’t risk it. Not yet.

Ogain lowered his body, offering his back for flight.

’No,’ she replied silently, brushing his feathers. Flying with a churning stomach would be a nightmare.

So she rode.

The hour-long ride back home passed in near silence, the chill air stinging her cheeks, the forest already dipped in the bronze of late autumn. When they finally reached the castle gates, she spotted Master Arcane just beyond, deep in conversation with Librarian Biken. His eyes were alight, rare for the old bird.

Ren’s heart leaped. He had found something.

She dismounted quickly, barely waiting for Viva to stop, and hurried toward him. "Principal Arcane," she called, breathless, "you must’ve discovered something important if you left the Historian Tower."

The black peacock shifter gave a brisk nod, his eyes shimmering faintly in the twilight. "Yes. We should speak in private, Your Grace."

Without hesitation, Ren led him into her husband’s study. She closed the door behind them, the wood thudding shut like the sealing of a vow.

"Is there a way to enter that realm?" Ren asked, barely containing the tremble in her voice.

"I don’t know for certain," Arcane admitted, "but I’ve found something, an ancient script." He reached into his robes and extended a worn piece of parchment to her. "This was discovered in Deagara’s burned library. It appears to be a fragment of a diary."

Ren took the brittle page with care, her breath catching as her eyes scanned the faded ink in the old tongue. The words struck her like lightning.

The demon god was cast into the prison... not to be destroyed, but to suffer.

Her hand flew to her mouth, eyes wide. The gods hadn’t killed his soul.

Then Kai... Kai might still be alive.

"A Griffin found him?" she whispered in disbelief.

Arcane nodded. "Yes. A royal-blooded Griffin, like Ogain. The bond between the Griffin and the demon god was powerful, deeper than mere servitude. The diary mentions his survivor’s name... Lillieth. I never knew the late Queen had done that. She never told me about this to record."

Secrets! Ren’s thoughts scattered like windblown ash. Lillieth. The name echoed with mystery and buried truths.

Arcane stepped closer, lowering his voice. "There’s more. The Fae King, your grandfather, may know of this tale. He might even be hiding it. You should speak with him."

Ren hesitated, her fingers tightening around the parchment. If her grandfather truly knew something... if he had withheld this... he didn’t mention it in his letters. Her jaw clenched. How could she trust him if he was keeping such secrets? Still, if there was even a sliver of hope to bring Kai back... she had to try.

"I want to summon the Demon God," Ren said firmly, her voice steady despite the weight in her chest. "I am his daughter-in-law. He must answer me... and tell us how Ogain and I can bring back the Alpha King, my husband."

The historian went silent, folding his hands behind his back. After a long pause, he gave a slow nod. "We’ll go to the Cave Temple. That’s where the veil between realms is thin. I’ll perform the formation myself. I doubt you have the strength to handle it."

His eyes dropped, lingering on her belly.

Ren’s heart skipped. Her fingers curled instinctively over her womb. A painful light flickered in her face as she bit the inside of her lip. She couldn’t stop herself from asking, "How long have you known?"

"The moment you fainted in my study," he replied without hesitation. "You whispered it while dreaming, said it to our King, as if he were standing there."

Ren’s shoulders slumped. He was right. Last week, she’d collapsed while unraveling one of Nimoieth’s cursed spells. In her fevered haze, she had called Kaisun... and let the secret slip.

"Please don’t tell anyone," she begged quietly. "I want him to know first. Only him."

"You have my word, my Queen," the historian assured, his voice gentle now. "No soul shall hear it from me."

They left the study. Vassals were fixing the castle’s flaws, getting ready for a harsh winter. A breeze passed through the tower’s cracked windowsill, stirring the candle flames.

"Now," he added, lifting the parchment, "shall we summon the Demon God? The clouds are heavy tonight, they’ll shield the full moon, just enough for the energy to be right. It’s the perfect chance to open a gate between realms. The ritual must be done now if you want him to answer."

Ren nodded, her breath trembling. Her hand hovered once more over her belly. She couldn’t wait. Every night without Kaisun was a bleeding wound.

And Azrael... he hadn’t come to see her since the summoning. She was worried. That formation, that divine gate, might have been easy for an Elite Saint. But not for Az. He was a brother, not just a regular Saint. And he might blame himself for what happened.
