The Devil's Son and His Fated Bride
Chapter 18: Godly Burning Eyes

Chapter 18: Godly Burning Eyes

Starting with a preamble, she tried to make it comfortable for them to strike up the conversation. Most of the time, she had a lot to say, but when the time came to speak, his beauty and the look on his face distracted her. He was the kind of person who could shatter the strong walls she had built around herself to avoid him. The more she resisted him, the more her thoughts tumbled over to the image of him.

"Thank you for making this chair. It is very comfortable."

Ren noted that. She was truly amazed at how careful he was about even the details.

"Don’t mention it. I would have done it for everyone, Doe-eyes!" He ran his fingers into his jet-black hair. Doing that made Ren see how bright his golden eyes shone in the nighttime. During the journey, his hair was always on his forehead, covering his thick eyebrows and eyelashes. Now that she recalled it well, he was always lowering his eyes quickly, not staring at her for so long.

’Does he find me ugly to look at?’

"You are not different!" His words hit like lightning. Of course, she was even lesser than others in his perspective. A frail mortal he didn’t want to be with. Why did she forget that he was pretentious in front of others?

"You care about your people a lot!"

He nodded. "I do. I had promised to make this land a safe home for them. Any threat will be diminished."

His voice was hoarse and carried a tinge of warning. She chuckled bitterly. "I’m not intending to harm anyone. And this is the subject of our conversation." He might be concerned about her seeking revenge upon Elaika.

He threw his left leg on the right one and interlaced his fingers, ready to hear her.

"Why did you take the bracelet off? You could have let me die and put the blame on my uncle."

He chuckled. "I could, but I didn’t."

"Why?"

She felt her heart hammering, and the moment was gripping her chest like a vise. How stupid she was to think he cared about her.

"Do you remember I told you about your duty as my wife?"

He looked at her from the corner of his eye, but she blinked and looked the other way, compelling herself not to torment her heart by meeting his godly burning eyes.

"I... of course." She swallowed her saliva hard.

He nodded and clicked his tongue on his sharp fang. She liked that he did it often and made that sound. "Good. One of those duties is to protect what I leave behind when I leave for the war."

Ren tilted her head, trying to understand what he meant. But her? Protecting this land full of mighty and somehow crazed beasts who could swallow her up for their one meal? A mere human? Huh? She was baffled.

She presumed he meant to maintain the chores, checking vassals. That was all. Ruling in his absence? That was impossible. She didn’t want to mess up with them. Elaika’s eyes were already sending daggers to her throat.

"What? I can’t. I’m not powerful like them." She didn’t hesitate to refuse it.

"You will be! I’ve summoned someone to assess the color of your magic and train you upon it. I trust him more than anyone else. Let’s pray you carry the light magic."

A master to train her magic? Why would he let her do that?

"How can you trust me? I don’t trust myself!" She panicked and spoke her heart, carefully looking around to see if no one was there to hear what she confessed.

Kai grinned. "If someone was eavesdropping, I would’ve known."

No, he didn’t understand. It was already tough for her to speak with him, and out of distress, she just said what she shouldn’t have.

"Don’t worry, you won’t hurt anyone."

He reassured her, but she couldn’t trust it. They were just words.

"And if I fail?"

He frowned and looked directly into her eyes, again those flames raging in his eyes, the ones she saw when that demon attacked. "Try not to, Doe-eyes! Thegara has 12 clans of shifters. Without a mighty power, you won’t be able to protect yourself if I’m far. And if something occurs to you, this entire land will burn."

Ren swallowed. She didn’t want to see innocent people get hurt because of her failures. She once disappointed her own family. She wanted to sustain this one and take care of it. She wanted her husband and this bond between them too.

Between ragged breaths, she begged, "Then come back soon!" She lowered her head, and her fingers tugged at her blue light dress. "Don’t leave me alone with heavy tasks I know nothing about."

Kaisun narrowed his eyes and stared at her for a while. Did she get used to seeing him around her? So definitely, he must stay away often.

"I’ll have to train my men before the war. From tomorrow, I’ll see you at night only. You’ll be on your own for a better good."

Ren bit her lower lip. He was making a large rift between them.

’I promise not to trouble you if you don’t want me. I’ll simply vanish like I never existed.’ Ren thought.

Suddenly, the frown line on Kai’s forehead deepened.

"Alright, so I think we should go back to our chamber. It is getting colder here," Ren recommended calmly.

He stood up and pushed the wheelchair. He had a question about the mind link the other day when Elaika blasted on her but kept it with him when she wasn’t eager to continue talking to him anymore.

"Is there anything else on your mind?"

About what?

"Elaika, maybe?" He was curious to know if she was jealous or not.

"I’ll try to solve things between us. Please just don’t torture her because of me again. She was your lover before I came. Please don’t resist your desires for her since this marriage is just an arranged treaty."

Kai raised his brow. "Is that so?"

Ren pouted. He was waiting for her permission? Foolish Ren surely he wouldn’t care and would sleep with anyone he wanted.

"Yes, I’m just fine!"

Kai gestured as if he wasn’t sure. This doe-eye truly had a strong resistance toward the mark’s impact and their bond. Interesting! She was the only woman he had ever marked in his entire life, so the pull must be stronger. He was already in ache as he had to battle both his longings for her body and his pride. But there was no way he’d touch her before she implored.

"Alright, then! We will see."

As he pushed her to the doorway, her eyes lurked around and stopped on the stone pillars with engraved dragons on them. A Dove had built a nest above the left one. It was the entrance to the Cursed Garden. Now she could see how enormous that dead garden was, it stretched to the skirt of the mountain.

"What happened to that garden?"

Kai didn’t even bother to look that way. "Stay away from those thorns. They are poisonous."

She gritted her teeth at his impulse. He could at least be a bit nice about that. She just wanted to know the story behind it, just out of curiosity, nothing else. He was nonchalant and didn’t want to talk to her.

"I apologize if I offended you!" she taunted. The air around them was getting uncomfortably colder.

Kai snorted. "It’s no big deal, just stay away from there."
