The Devil's Son and His Fated Bride -
Chapter 17: Nice Speech
Chapter 17: Nice Speech
Taking her place next to her husband, she hid her trembling hands beneath the table. However, as her eyes peeked at him, his gaze was on her hands. She shyly flashed him a bitter smile.
Kai frowned and looked at his pack members. "Enough!" His voice was commanding and loud, bringing a silence that could deafen ears. The shifters exchanged submissive glances. Some of them didn’t have any problem with their Luna Queen being human, mostly male shifters, but obviously, she wasn’t that popular among the females.
"I expected you all to debate about it respectfully. But I see most of you have the stomach to disrespect my wife in front of me. I wonder where this courage has crept into my court!"
His voice was firm, but each word carried a depth that dripped with danger.
As he paused, Coran pulled back his seat and stood up, going behind his sister, his palms resting on her shoulders. Elaika flinched under that menacing touch.
"What is it, brother?" A hint of fear shook her voice, making the rest of the females slouch. If Elaika, the most ruthless one among them, was so horrified, the rest of them would be even more nervous.
Coran bent down, his head near her ear, making sure everyone would hear. "I’ve heard unpleasant words about our Luna. I wonder who spread them?"
Elaika’s green eyes flickered, tears filling them. "It was just a mistake. I wasn’t sober after drinking so much."
Kai chuckled wickedly as she confessed far faster than he had anticipated.
"And you’ll learn your lesson tonight!" Coran’s nails grew large, grazing her thin skin. Elaika started crying and wailing to be forgiven.
Ren was startled and couldn’t believe her husband was smiling. She didn’t want to see gore at the dining table. Her heart skipped a beat.
"Please, stop torturing her!" She shouted when no one dared to interfere. Involuntarily, she slammed her palm against the table, making the cutlery jingle.
All eyes turned to her, heads tilting toward her with diverse emotions. Kaisun smirked at Coran, and with a nod, he commanded him to stop.
Elaika immediately grabbed her bloody neck and stood up, pushing her brother away.
"Sit down, Elaika! I know you heal fast."
Ren commanded, making her husband even more amused. He was truly enjoying himself at her expense. Ren tried not to look at him and became flustered. She ignored the cluster of distress swirling in her stomach.
Elaika stilled where she was and turned around. Her brother passed her a silk napkin. "Clean up!"
But to his surprise, after snatching the napkin, Elaika licked her bloody hand.
"Idiot!" Coran scolded his troublesome sister.
Her action turned Ren’s stomach, but she pushed it down and steeled herself, her urge to speak with resolve. "I should be standing now, but unfortunately, I can’t." She paused to take a breath.
"I believe I haven’t introduced myself properly yet. I am Princess Reneira D’orient, the eldest daughter of Alekin D’orient. My uncle is King Benkin. And yes, we are humans. But you’ve heard what our reputation stands for."
Elaika was furious, so she murmured, "Bloody killers." Taunting her, she slumped into her chair.
Coran nudged her to keep her tongue under control. She was lucky that the Alpha King hadn’t killed her yet.
"I’m not here as an enemy. Please, remember that I will never use my magic to hurt people. I’ll use it to build and heal. That’s what I am. I don’t want you to accept me as Luna or your Queen, but all I want is for you to give me a chance to help my husband win this war."
She made it brief and clenched her fists when suddenly Kai grabbed her hand and feigned a smile. He was satisfied that she held her ground against others. But the problem was: how was she supposed to keep her guard up against this charming, god-like creature who just killed her with that smile?
’Oh, don’t do this,’ she said in her mind, but he squeezed her hand even more.
Kai’s expression grew serious and rough as he looked at the others. "Is there anyone who doesn’t like Princess Reneira as Luna Queen?"
Among the presenters, someone muttered, "So he marked her."
Kai heard it clearly and responded, "Yes, I followed the rite, the law I wrote. Do you have any objections?"
It sounded as though he would reprimand them if they dared to speak their minds. But Ren’s attention was focused on his prudent words. The law he wrote? How old was her husband exactly?
"So, the impact has started."
Another one muttered. Ren was utterly dumbfounded, but it wasn’t the time to ask what it meant. Perhaps they meant the start of her rule as their Luna. Neither of those females seemed happy to take orders from a human. A human who was born to be their subordinate and vassal.
"Now, eat! Soon, we will be holding a feast for our people to welcome their Queen. After that, the preparation for the war begins. Keep and forge this in your mind: if we die in this war, this world will be doomed to corruption and decay."
Ren was sad to hear that at their first dinner table. But when she came to think of it, that was true. She didn’t want to watch cities burn and people being slaughtered at the hands of the dead.
Kai eventually let go of her hand so she could breathe easily. Filling her plate with toasted lamb and vegetables, he said, "Eat well and heal fast."
She smiled and nodded. Peeking at others, she realized that no one was looking at her except for Elaika and the two females next to her. The animosity in their eyes blazed dangerously, alarming her to get well fast and learn how to use her magic. In this land, those with power were at the top of the life pyramid.
After dinner, Kai pushed her wheelchair to the garden, taking his coat off and placing it around her shoulders.
"Is it cold?"
Ren shook her head. "Thank you for bringing me out. There are things we must discuss."
"Sure, go ahead! By the way, nice speech though."
She blushed and lowered her head, playing with her fingers. It cost her a lot of strength to speak like that in front of so many strangers.
He stopped under the oak tree and sat on the stone bench, right next to her wheelchair.
