The Devil's Son and His Fated Bride
Chapter 128: Give me your necklace.

Chapter 128: Give me your necklace.

"Now, we are alone! Go ahead!" Ren threw her arms wide, her eyes blazing as she gestured to the emptiness around them.

Azrael chuckled, the sound was annoying, but he seemed unbothered. "Yes, we are, princess. I’m here to fix things between us. There is something you must be wary of."

Ren tilted her head, impatience was clear in her tone. "What could that be?"

"Believing you can deceive the God of Darkness and he wouldn’t know."

She hadn’t claimed he wouldn’t find out. The Demon God would understand everything, sooner or later.

"So?" she asked coolly.

"Stop tormenting my brother for my father’s will. Do whatever your heart wants and become decisive. He is waiting to see your heart turn dark, and you’ll be the next Nimoieth. My father is still mad that his brother married Lillieth instead of rejecting her. He could ascend alongside him to become a demon God. He will play with you because you are the Fae King’s granddaughter." Azrael clarified, keeping it brief.

Ren felt a cluster of cold terror running down her spine. The Demon God was waiting for what?

"Why are you helping us?" she asked. This man was already too mysterious to read. What if he was manipulating her? She could only trust her husband now.

"Your mother gave me a different life, for a long time. She helped me leave the job my father gave me and start anew. I owe her. This is how I return the favor."

Ren gritted her teeth. Terror churned with a raw knot of angst inside her. What had made her believe her petty, silly tricks could ever work on someone who had walked through millennia? Either way, she helped her husband with the deal she made and that was enough for now.

"Now what? Do you expect me to thank you?"

Azrael snorted. She was still furious with him. "Stop holding a grudge. I have no hidden motive to hurt you, or my brother. I only want to catch Luther before he unleashes a catastrophe."

Ren gave a tight nod. "You’re hard to trust. And there are reasons for that, you know."

Azrael stepped closer to the table where she was inspecting a while ago, his gaze dropping to the necklace around her neck. "If I help you unravel the secret behind the runes on your necklace, will you forgive me?"

He wasn’t bargaining for trust, he knew better than to ask for that. But if she would just stop looking at him like he was a storm waiting to strike... that would be a start.

Ren cocked her head, watching him now standing by the table, his gaze locked on the claw mark etched into the surface. "He’s been poisoning himself to suppress his desires," Azrael murmured.

With a simple wave of his hand, a drawer creaked open, and a wooden box floated out, landing softly in his grasp.

He flipped it open. "Do you want to decipher the runes or not?"

Ren’s breath caught as she glimpsed the contents, vials filled with an opaque black liquid. She didn’t know what it was, but if Kai had truly been poisoning himself, draining his own strength just to shield her from his craving...

Her throat clenched. Her heart felt too full.

Tears burned her eyes. This was too much. Kaisun had gone too far in his need to protect her. And now, all she wanted was to storm out of this study, wrap her arms around him, kiss him until the ache faded, and give herself to him completely. Body and soul.

"Can you... decipher it...?" Ren’s voice trembled, lips quivering.

"Yes," Azrael answered simply.

With numb fingers, she unclasped the necklace and placed it into his hand.

Azrael rested it on his right palm and raised his left above it. The silver pulsed faintly as ancient runes lifted from the metal’s surface, glowing faint blue. One by one, they rose into the air, aligning like constellations, forming a coherent sentence.

"You can read them, can’t you? I’d taught you," he asked.

Ren stared at the runes, her voice barely above a whisper. "Yes. ’To My Daughter, Reneira.’"

The moment the words left her lips, the runes shimmered and transformed, morphing into a scroll that floated midair.

Ren stood frozen, breath stolen. A scroll. Hidden inside her necklace all this time.

Azrael handed the necklace back, now stripped of its runes. The scroll floated gently into her waiting hand.

Ren gasped for air. This was magnificent and painful. All her emotions mingled right now.

"I’m leaving now. But stop being arrogant. You’ll need me soon, especially when you meet the Fae Crown Prince. He’s my bitter half-brother if you remember."

Azrael was already pacing backward, his form dissolving into the shadows as he spoke. A breath later, he was gone.

Ren didn’t even glance up. Her eyes were locked on the scroll trembling in her hand.

A letter from her mother. Words written by her hand. This made her heart lurch.

She staggered to the sofa and collapsed with a soft thud. Azrael truly was a storm...sweeping in, stirring everything until thoughts tangled, then vanishing into silence, leaving behind a cold void filled with sorrow and unease.

Her fingertips felt icy as she unfurled the scroll. The tears she’d fought so hard to hold back finally broke free, hot and endless as they streamed down her cheeks.

And then...

She began to read her mother’s message.

[To the fruit of my life,

To the one I worship,

To my Reneira,

It is raining tonight, and you’ve been dancing inside my belly. We laughed together, your tiny kicks, a language only I could understand, and I spent hours whispering to you about the world you’ll grow into.

But now, I fear I won’t be there to witness my little girl running to me, falling and rising with scraped knees and wild dreams.

Reneira, there are a thousand things I long to tell you, yet time slips too quickly through my hands...
