The Devil's Son and His Fated Bride
Chapter 127: Having a word with the Lord of Death!?

Chapter 127: Having a word with the Lord of Death!?

"Fine!" Arkilla laughed, feigning surrender.

Ren cleaned her messy lips before another person arrived and found out what was going on.

Gloria giggled, gliding over to the table where she poured a cup of tea for her lady. "Please drink some. You must be exhausted. You didn’t sleep at all last night. His Highness was so worried about you."

Ren’s smile faltered. Her heart dropped, recalling the vulnerable moment from earlier, how Kai had bared his soul to her. He so rarely did that. And she hadn’t even asked what was eating him alive.

The weight of guilt pressed down on her chest. She remembered now that he hated Luther but couldn’t kill him. Not because he lacked power, but because of the underworld law: sons of the Demon God couldn’t slay one another when separated by worlds.

If one of them broke a law of the Dark Throne, they had to be brought back for judgment, those were Azrael’s words, back when Ren lived as Anarya, her mother.

"Come, sit and have your tea with me," she said gently, pulling herself from the tangle of thoughts. "These pastries are delicious."

The girls smiled and joined her without hesitation.

Neither of them had eaten properly since the night before.

"I feel bad for those clans," Arkilla remarked. "They might end up fighting each other in secret."

But Ren barely registered the words. Her thoughts drifted, drawn to her husband, to the storm behind his eyes, and how it tortured him to let Luther near her. Gloria and Arkilla’s voices faded into the background, like a muffled breeze.

Kai didn’t want her to keep carrying everyone else’s burdens. He wanted them to start choosing themselves, for once. And now, sitting in the quiet aftermath, she realized he was right.

Her whole life, she had sacrificed her needs and buried her desires beneath the weight of duty and expectation. But now... she wanted more.

More than his sweet, consuming kisses. More than his burning touch.

She wanted to belong to him, completely. She wanted him inside her, body and soul.

The thought made her heart race. A flush of heat rushed to her cheeks.

"The second child of Lillieth is the Crown prince of the Fae? He is the son of two Fallen Saints! King Xakiel and Lillieth, why didn’t I think of it? Oh my goodness. He must be so strong!" Gloria was startled after hearing what Arkilla had brought up. Her eyes drifted to Reneira, but she was staring at the teacup, "Your Highness? Can you hear us?" Gloria’s voice cut through her reverie.

Ren blinked, flustered. "Ah... what were you saying?"

"We were talking about Lillieth and her second son who is actually your first Uncle. And he is more than ten thousand years old!" Arkilla drawled, indicating Ren’s powerful Fae family.

Oh damn! She was sick of this too. Her husband was right. This family had such mysterious entangled angles that would blow her mind. She just wanted to think about Kai, not anybody else or the war. Just for one night! They just needed one night for themselves and to skip all the official tasks.

"Girls, let us not talk about my twisted Fae family and head to my husband’s study instead!" She demanded and got to her feet.

As Ren made her way toward the study, she caught sight of Mr. Biken, the ever-diligent librarian, speaking with Healer Rigo out on the balcony.

"My Queen, it is good to see you," Biken greeted, bowing slightly.

"Can I help you?" Ren asked, her gaze momentarily drifting to the night sky beyond the arched window. Countless stars shimmered like silent witnesses, their light cold and distant.

"There’s nothing urgent," Biken replied, lifting a metallic scroll case etched with delicate runes. "I’ve simply gathered all the information we’ve uncovered into one place. This scroll belongs to you."

He extended the case toward her with both hands, reverent and precise. Ren’s eyes lit up, this was exactly what she had intended to do. Somehow, the quiet young bird had read her mind.

"You’ve done well, Master Biken. I appreciate your hard work. Tell me, how can I repay your efforts?"

He shook his head with a soft smile. "This is nothing compared to what you’ve given us. You owe me nothing, my Queen."

Ren inclined her head respectfully before turning to Healer Rigo. "Have you been working on the poison?"

"Yes, my Luna," Rigo said. "Agara and I prepared the compounds. He’s already delivered them to Axe and Alpha Xander."

"Good," she murmured, thoughtful. "I need to understand why shifter blood holds such importance. I suspect this has something to do with Lillieth."

Mr. Biken’s expression grew grim. He, too, had been haunted by the same thought. That saint, the shadow behind the veil, had played a far more dangerous role in her sister’s schemes than anyone had dared believe. They would have to dig deeper. Much deeper.

"Please excuse us for now. I have a matter to attend to," Ren said, offering a brief nod before turning away. Without another word, she strode toward the study, Arkilla keeping close behind. Ren intended to wait there for Kai. The meeting he was in might last for hours, but she didn’t mind. Not tonight.

Inside the quiet study, she wandered past the shelves and picked up a few books, curious about the kind of stories her husband preferred. To her surprise, most were written by wandering authors, tales collected by traveling bards who journeyed across kingdoms, weaving myths into performances.

Her gaze settled on the polished mahogany table at the room’s center. This one was new, she remembered the older, worn piece that once stood in its place. Stepping closer, she brushed her fingers across the glossy surface until they paused over fresh scratches carved into the wood.

"Arkilla," she said, her voice low, "when was the last time His Highness was here?"

"Hmm... I believe it was just before the funeral ceremony."

Ren’s brows furrowed. Why would Kai leave claw-like marks on the table... and why hadn’t he mentioned returning?

She turned slowly, the air in the room suddenly still.

"Are you spying on me now?" she asked the shadows, her tone serene but sharp.

A familiar, calm voice echoed from the darkness. "May I have a moment with you? Alone."

Azrael.

Before Ren could respond, Arkilla stepped in front of her, unsheathing her sword in one smooth motion. Steel caught the candlelight as she shielded Ren with her body, her stance sharp and determined. This man was the definition of death, itself! Should he not be hunting the Fae Lord? What the heck was he doing here?

"Well, I don’t know how to fight death," Arkilla said, her grip tightening on the hilt of her sword, "but I’m not opposed to giving it a try."

Azrael chuckled, clearly amused by her boldness. "Hmm... they’re always so quick to draw steel. Arkilla, was it?" His golden eyes gleamed. "So protective. It’s adorable, really."

"What do you want?" Gloria demanded, stepping between him and Arkilla, her brows drawn tight with suspicion.

Azrael raised both hands in mock surrender. "You ladies are so aggressive. I’m only here to talk to her." His voice was smooth but laced with irritation, like someone forced to entertain a child’s tantrum.

"Arkilla. Gloria." Ren’s voice sliced through the room, calm but firm. "It’s fine. He won’t harm me."

"This is the same man who dragged you into the Underworld," Arkilla snapped, disbelief etched across her face. "How can we trust him, especially when His Highness isn’t here?"

Ren didn’t flinch. "My husband trusts him," she said quietly. And that was all that mattered.

She stepped forward, brushing past Arkilla without hesitation. "Wait outside for a while."

Her tone left no room for debate, it was a command, not a request.
