Chapter 124: Send her to the front line to fight.
Going to Ogain’s nest building, she opened the door, and the fledgling immediately left Calisa’s side and rushed to her, dragging his head along her skirt.
"My lovely Ogain! How have you been?"
She had missed him, even though she’d seen him just yesterday evening before leaving for the historians’ tower.
"I’ve been fine. I won against Calisa in speed today."
His voice was so cute. Ren wished others could hear it too, but the bond was only between the two of them, Griffin and the Tamer. Griffins could communicate with their own kind, but this connection was different.
"Come, I have an issue that only you can solve," Ren told him as she strode to the center of the hall.
Calisa bowed before her. "My Queen, I’ve heard about you. I knew you were different." A happy grin tugged at the corner of his lips.
"Oh, dear Calisa. I wish we could talk more, but I need your help too. I want you to change your father’s mind about Elaika’s death sentence."
She glanced at Ogain, who was now the size of a goat. This fledgling was growing fast indeed. Being a royal griffin had its advantages, but she hadn’t found much information about them in the castle library. She doubted there was any in the historians’ tower either, but logic demanded she ask next time.
"What is it? Why is this about Elaika, again? My Queen, please don’t tell me you want to save your very enemy!" Calisa’s voice trembled, distressed like a panicked bird.
"I have to. I can’t kill her for vengeance."
Sitting in the center of the entrance hall, Ren gently stroked Ogain’s head.
"Listen, Ogain. I want you to become Elaika’s sponsor so she’ll be sent to the front line. I don’t want them to execute her."
Ogain stepped back, musing. He didn’t want to save someone who had killed innocent people.
"That’s not fair," Ogain objected.
"See, he is not eager!" Calisa remarked.
"The clans will be angry, Your Grace," he added.
"Gods! I told you. This will make them defy you," Arkilla warned.
"Sending someone to the battlefield is the same as execution," Gloria chimed in, siding with Ren.
But it seemed the others still found it irrational to let Elaika leave Thegara, alive.
"What if she joins Luther’s army?" Calisa asked quickly.
"Then our warriors will end her life there. Justice will be served," Ren replied with steel resolve. She didn’t want to let the girl die, not like this.
"I’ll think about it," Ogain said at last, turning toward the dish of fresh meat. He began eating in silence.
Ren let out a heavy sigh. Was that really a thinking position? Either way, she didn’t rush him. The decision was his to make, and since he wasn’t yet mature, the elders might reject it regardless.
Once the dish was empty, he returned. "I’ll decide for her on your behalf. Do you promise not to protest?"
Ogain still saw the girl as a threat, and she would need to prove herself.
"You’re not going to let her die... are you?" Ren’s tone turned pleading.
"No, I’m not. But I’m certain she’ll repeat her mistake so I will kill her if she did."
That meant Ogain would be watchful, ready to hunt her down if Elaika faltered. Her life would hang in the balance, subject to his judgment at any moment.
"Good! Now come with me, please."
Ogain flapped his wings and followed her to the door, and together they marched toward the courtyard.
Kai stood in intense conversation with a few elders, trying to convince them that Elaika’s actions had been impulsive and that the Mountain Clan had nothing to do with it.
"I assure you, if the Mountain Clan were behind it, I would know," Kai said firmly.
"How could you not realize the Omegas were missing?" a bear elder challenged.
"I received a report, but my men were searching in the wrong place. And after seeing the vampire unshackled, I suspect it was all connected to someone..."
His words trailed off as all eyes shifted to the black griffin and his tamer.
They were captivated by the sight. Ogain had grown significantly since they last saw him.
"Your Majesty, you don’t need to be here," Silvine said. Her granddaughter had tried to kill their Luna Queen, yet here Ren stood. Still, a tinge of pride crept into Silvine’s tone. At least she remembered what Ren had insisted they call her, Your Majesty.
"My wife is right. We’re already too ashamed to look you in the eye," Elaika’s grandfather added.
"Then don’t look into my eyes. Just listen."
The elders exchanged stunned glances. She was no longer the shy, frail human. Something in her had shifted, she now radiated sovereignty and quiet command, her presence steeped in elegance.
"We are at your service, Your Highness," one of the feline elders said respectfully.
"My Ogain and I don’t want you to execute her," she stated plainly. There was no need for a flourish of formal words.
"I’m afraid that’s impossible, Luna Queen," said the elder of the River Wolves. One of the slain Omegas had come from his clan, and peace between the two clans was already hanging by a thread.
"I understand we’re mourning two valuable guards, murdered most horrifically," Ren said. "But her life is now in our hands, and we can use it better. We are at war, we can’t fight among ourselves."
The elder of the River Wolves gritted his teeth. In his eyes, the only fitting payment for taking a life was death, nothing else could replace it.
Kai was stunned as well. ’Wife, the decision is made. I won’t let her live.’ His jaw tightened. He didn’t like that Ren was stepping in, potentially making enemies for herself.
’Trust me, she replied calmly. I have a better use for her. Send her to the front lines. If she betrays us there, our warriors will end her. She can’t become a vampire, so either way, the gods will decide her fate.’
Kai exhaled. They needed more warriors in this war... and Elaika was undeniably wild. A weapon, if aimed right.
’Tell them,’ he finally allowed it.
"Please send her to the front line instead," Ren said, her voice firm.
"She will betray us the moment she arrives," the Serpent elder hissed, his voice cold. "She might even sell our strategies to the enemy."
The other elders murmured among themselves, exchanging worried glances. But the conversation came to an abrupt halt when the creak of a carriage wheel cut through the air, followed by the mournful wails and screams of the Omega families.
Butler Siamon and Beta Coran arrived, carrying the lifeless, drenched bodies of the fallen Omegas.
