Chapter 108: Confess, You’re jealous!
"You guys head back to your rooms. I’m taking my wife to the Spring," Kai exclaimed, dismissing them as he emerged from the dungeons. Ren clung tightly to his hand, her grip unrelenting. For no reason, she was worried he might faint!
"Arkilla, are you sure about not going to the infirmary?" Ren asked.
"Totally fine." She drawled and paced back to leave.
"Alright," Agara replied to Kai, "but gather only those you trust in the meeting hall. I’ll see you tomorrow morning. We need to discuss this. Those shackles were unlocked."
Kai turned to Ren, his voice low. "Let’s get out of here before they drag us into another commotion."
They slipped behind the castle, miles away from the buildings where a cave nestled in the heart of jagged rocks came into view. Ren had never ventured to this part of the castle before. As they climbed the black, rocky steps, she asked nervously, "Are you sure you’re alright?"
"Yes. You didn’t even need to waste the antidote."
Ren frowned and huffed in frustration. "I didn’t waste it. What if that infection had affected you?" He said once a vampire’s wound never hurt him nor did it cause infection. But Ren was talking about the pain. She hated to cause him severe pain.
"Oh, now you suddenly care about me?"
"I always care about you! You should’ve let Shadow out."
Shadow stirred in his head. Ask her, you bastard, did she miss me? Kai snorted. "Did you miss him?"
"I did! I trust him when it comes to bloody fights."
Kai halted as they reached the final step.
"Huh! So I’m not good at fighting?"
Ren shrugged. "I’ve never seen you train or fight," she said, lying smoothly.
"You have. Plenty of times! Remember the forest? I collected you from Jaigara. That was a fight!"
Ren pressed her lips together. "I didn’t see much. I ran away."
Kai tilted his head, wondering if she might run again. Without a word, he took her hand, as he always did, and led her inside.
Ren winced, overwhelmed by the beauty before her. The water shimmered like a gem, nestled in a natural pool. Her eyes sparkled as if reflecting stars.
"This is incredible."
"You haven’t seen the one in the forest yet," he said casually.
Ren listened to the soft trickle of water falling from countless cracks, the sound soothing and serene. She couldn’t imagine a place more perfect than this.
"Take off your clothes, wife. The water is cool."
Her eyes widened. "What? You want me to go into the pool... naked?"
"There’s nothing I haven’t seen."
He pulled off his shirt, and within seconds, stood before her, bare skin and sculpted muscle.
She froze. Her eyes refused to move, tracing every line, every contour, all the way down to his groin. Crap! Memories of that day beneath the oak tree crashed into her, the day she released him.
Heat rose to her cheeks, but his voice yanked her from the trance. "Did you miss any significant detail or part to touch?"
Ren spun around quickly, but before she could take a step, he closed the distance with one long stride and wrapped his arms around her from behind.
"Don’t do this again," he murmured, his breath brushing the shell of her ear.
"I don’t... do anything!" She stammered.
"Don’t turn your face away from me. I can bear everything, but not this. Stop shutting me out. I could survive centuries of torture in my father’s dungeons, but I can’t bear to see you like this. Look at me the way you used to."
Ren’s heart pounded so hard it stole her breath. Slowly, she turned and cupped his face with her small palms. "Do you remember what you told me? ’Let’s pretend we’re a lovely couple’?"
Kai’s eyes widened. Why was she bringing that up now? Was this her way of getting back at him for his ruthless ways? His jaw tensed beneath her hands.
"I do..."
"Now we have to pretend otherwise until I bring your brother to his knees."
Of all the things Kai had imagined, this... this he hadn’t. The deal with his father. The severed mating bond. And now, pretending? His expression hardened as he pulled away from her touch and dove into the pool. Water splashed against the rock as he leaned back against the edge, arms spread wide, but his gaze distant.
"All your attention is on my brother," he said, his voice calm and bitter. "I wouldn’t be surprised if you chose him over me."
A cold wave ran down Ren’s spine. How did it come to this? How had he misunderstood her so completely?
Without another word, she slipped out of her dress, leaving only her undergarments, just in case Coran decided to appear out of thin air again.
The cool water kissed her skin, making it prickle, but it carried away the filth and heaviness clinging to her. Clean, but uncertain, she drifted toward him with a smile, only to see him turn his head, staring into nothing.
Was he ignoring her now?
Heart aching, she pressed her face to his chest, listening to the steady rhythm of his heartbeat beneath her ear.
"Confess," she whispered. "You’re jealous."
"I’m not," he muttered.
But in his head, Shadow scoffed. ’You are.’
"Fine, you’re not," she said softly. "But I need you to understand me. I see your brother as a threat to my life. He knows we’re married and used the treaty as an excuse to spark a war. He has followers. Someone helped him uncover the agreement between our fathers. I can’t focus on anything else right now."
Kai looked down at the crown of her head, his voice low. "You can. You told my father to break the mating bond and to hide it from me. You lied."
Ren wrapped her arms tighter around him. He knew... yet he hadn’t punished her.
"I did," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. "Because it was the only way to free Shadow from being a hell pet. And... I need time, Kai. Time to figure out who, what, I really am. How many Human-Fae girls like me are out there? Just me."
He placed his palm on her waist, firm but gentle. "Your deal with my father never included sex." The bluntness of it made her blink. So frank.
"You’re teasing me!"
"We’re husband and wife. The curse is broken, and we have desires that must be suppressed!"
Ren started to pull away, but he caught her, drawing her against him. Her breasts pressed to his chest, and that’s when she saw it. Her underwear... floating on the surface of the water.
"I told you to take off your clothes, wife," he murmured, burying his face in the hollow of her neck, his lips nibbling her collarbone, "I miss you. Even when you’re this close, I still miss you."
Ren didn’t move. He wasn’t wrong. Maybe she was being too hard on herself. Maybe one day she’d regret all the moments she didn’t live with him fully, completely.
She cupped his face and suggested. "Kissing?"
The word left her lips like a question, but the hunger in his eyes was all the answer she needed. His mouth crashed into hers, and her heart leaped.
Gods, how much she had missed this. How much she had missed him.
