Chapter 107: Disappointing kill test III

’No’, he snapped.

Liar. Of course, he was. Jealous to his core. But he wore his indifference-like armor, pretending he didn’t feel it clawing through him every time she kept him at arm’s length.

"Let’s try an arrow," Kai said aloud, his voice sharp, almost too casual. His gaze never left Ren’s face. He needed something, anything, to release the pressure building inside him, to blow off his steam. And the beast shackled to the wall was the perfect outlet.

Ren handed him the strongest vial without hesitation. "Let’s see who wins, shall we? Your brother... or me."

Kai exhaled sharply, somewhere between a sigh and a growl. She was provoking him, playing this game like a child, but he couldn’t help admiring the fire in her. This side of her, bold, brash, competitive, was maddeningly attractive. And yet, the distance between them was eating him alive.

He uncorked the vial and tilted it over the arrowhead. This one was different, thicker, nearly tar-like. It clung to the metal with stubborn weight, black as night, pulsing faintly with silver dust in it, like it had a heartbeat of its own.

The creature’s hide was tougher than expected. Kai had to press the arrow harder just to pierce it. His eyes narrowed, blazing with resolve, and his lips moved with quiet command.

"Agara," he called out, voice cold, "if this poison doesn’t drop him, your sword finishes the job."

The unspoken warning was clear, this was the last night Kai would tolerate such an abomination rotting in his dungeons.

"I’ve got you," Agara replied, unsheathing his sword. The weapon shimmered brightly in the darkness, casting a pale gleam across his scarred skin.

Kai pulled the bowstring to its limit, every muscle taut, and released. The arrow shot forward with lethal precision, aimed straight for the heart.

Thud.

The arrow struck dead center. For a split second, the vampire screamed, then vanished into the dark like a snapped illusion.

Gone. Just like that.

Too fast.

"Where is it?" Arkilla’s voice cracked with panic. She didn’t have the enhanced vision the others possessed. Fear laced her tone, uncooked and real. There was no sound. No breath. No footsteps. Only silence. A suffocating, predatory silence that swallowed the entire chamber whole.

Kai’s eyes scanned the room, sharp and calculated. ’How fast was this thing? Fast enough to disappear from my sight...?’

He stepped into the shadows, trying to anticipate its movement. If the creature wasn’t lurking in the dark below... in the shadow for him to see it... Then it had to be... in light. He looked up.

There. On the ceiling.

The beast clung like a grotesque spider, eyes glinting with malice. In less than a second, it dropped. The sound of its chains snapping echoed like thunder, metal clanking violently against stone as it hit the floor, free and no longer restrained. What? How did he unlock those thick lock and chain links?!

The wild beast lunged with terrifying speed and struck Arkilla with a force that left the room breathless. She flew across the chamber, slammed into the wall, and crumpled with a sharp cry of pain.

"Ren!" Kai’s voice cracked through the chaos. He moved like lightning, throwing himself over her, shielding her with his entire body.

Ren gasped, frozen in his arms, the world was spinning and her breath caught. What the hell just happened?

And then... a thud...a severed head hit the dungeon floor, rolling past Siamon, its hollow eyes wide with death. Flames licked across the flesh, burning it into ash mid-roll.

The vampire’s pale body swayed for a heartbeat, then collapsed in a boneless heap, tendrils of smoke rising from the neck like a final breath.

Ren pushed against Kai’s chest, blinking rapidly as the haze of adrenaline began to fade. His face hovered over hers, damp with sweat, jaw clenched tight. Her heart kicked hard in her ribs.

"You are right, Princess. Only a noble Fae blood can make this beast." Agara started as he hurried to them. "Kaisun... you’re bleeding," his tone was sharp with alarm. He stepped closer, eyes scanning the torn fabric on Kai’s side. "A vampire wound won’t heal on its own. You know what they carry..."

Ren’s hands trembled against her husband’s chest. Infection. Poison. Darkness. And he had taken the hit for her.

The sound of blood dripping reached Ren’s ears, a slow, wet rhythm that turned her stomach cold. She turned toward Kai, dread coiling in her bowels.

"No, don’t look," he said softly, forcing a smile that only made it worse.

It shattered her.

"What did you do?" she whispered, her voice trembling, tears burning into her eyes.

Siamon was tending to Arkilla, who groaned in pain nearby, while the guards stood frozen above the corpse of the hellish creature that was slowly burning. No one had expected this. Not even in their worst fears.

Kai gave her another sheepish smile, but the pain in his eyes betrayed him. "What any man would do... to protect his wife."

Her heart cracked in half. "Antidote," she gasped. "Give me the antidote... it’s in that box!"

She pointed frantically at the satchel tucked into Agara’s robe. He was already bent over Kai, trying to heal the bleeding, his hands slick with red. Kai’s clothes were soaked, warmth fading from his body into the stone beneath them.

This was her fault. She was stubborn when he asked her to have some rest. They should’ve done this in the daylight and should’ve been more careful. But she had pushed too far. And now he was paying the price.

Siamon stepped in and reached into Agara’s robe. Kai still clung to Ren, arms wrapped around her as if he couldn’t bear to let her go, even now. She could barely move.

Siamon retrieved the box, opened it, and pulled out a small vial of the clear antidote. He pressed it into her trembling hand.

Ren cradled Kai’s face, tears streaking down her cheeks, and made him drink every drop. Only when the vial was empty did her body give out, and she collapsed against him.

Why didn’t he call on Shadow? Her mind screamed. His demon could’ve ended that creature in less than a second.

Agara worked quickly, weaving healing magic over the gaping wound. It took time, too much time, but eventually, the bleeding ended and the muscle began to mend.

The antidote had begun to work its way through Kai’s veins, steadying his breath, and easing the fever behind his eyes. But the damage had already been done. And so had the ache in her chest.
