Chapter 93: Needed a best friend
Different people and different approaches.
That was the route Fil was taking. Spending time with Vincent’s cruel friends wasn’t all for naught. It gave her a deep insight into what type of person they were and what kind of approach she would take. For Marcus, she was vulnerable. For Vincent, she was almost the same. In front of Anton, she had to be firm.
There were still a few more she hadn’t touched in the group.
And she didn’t want to waste time and lose her momentum.
The network where Marianne was working was not far from Anton’s studio. Thus, after leaving the studio, Fil drove near the network building. She glanced at the entrance of the building, holding her phone in front of her ear.
The phone rang a couple of times before it went to voicemail. Not surprising. Marianne should be busy at this hour. Thus, Fil tried once more. On the third try, Marianne picked up the call.
"Hey, Fil," Marianne greeted warmly as soon as the line connected. "How are you?"
"I’m okay." Fil smiled. "Are you available tonight?"
"Tonight?" Marianne glanced at the staff preparing the studio for the next broadcast. "I have to do a quick entertainment buzz segment."
"Oh..."
"Is everything okay?" she asked, brows furrowed.
"Yes, of course!"
"Fil." Marianne let out a deep sigh, her tone becoming more serious. "You know I am always busy at this hour of the day. You won’t call me if it’s not important. Is everything okay?"
Fil pressed her lips into a thin line, letting the silence reign in the line for a moment. "No, it’s okay."
"Fil."
"I just need to talk to someone," Fil confessed quietly with a tinge of sorrow. "Vincent and I broke up."
"You two, what?" Marianne furrowed her brows, glancing at the phone briefly.
"I need my best friend," Fil added. "I’m outside our building. I’ll wait for you outside."
"No, Fil." Marianne cleared her throat. "I’ll ask my assistant to pick you up. Wait for me in my dressing room, alright?"
"Alright."
"Okay. I’ll finish this quick."
After humming a tune, Fil ended the call. Her sharp and cold expression remained in stark contrast to her tone previously.
"That’s my bestie right there," she mocked under her breath, smirking in contempt. "Acting like she cares, when, in fact, she only wants to hear why we broke up."
*******
Just as Marianne instructed, her assistant escorted Fil to her dressing room when the latter arrived at the building’s lobby. Fil waited for Marianne in her dressing room, watching the entertainment buzz segment her best friend took over because the original reporter was sick.
"Hey there."
Fil peeled her eyes from the television to the door, catching Marianne step in with a subtle smile. Marianne trudged toward the couch where Fil was idling.
"What’s up?" Marianne asked worriedly. "I’m sorry you had to wait."
"It’s okay." Fil smiled in understanding, snapping her eyes at the television. "You are better than the one who is in charge of the entertainment segment."
Marianne chuckled. "Don’t say that. She’s a good friend, so I agreed when I got the call I have to cover for her."
"Once she watched the segment, she’d make sure she won’t get sick again," Fil humored. "Else, you might replace her for good."
"That’s not true." Marianne humbled with a chuckle, sighing as the atmosphere between them lightened up a bit. "Are you alright?"
"A little."
"What happened?"
Fil shrugged. "I don’t know."
"You don’t know?" Marianne furrowed her brows. "Did he... break up with you?"
Fil pressed her lips together, observing Marianne’s reaction. On the outside, Marianne was obviously worried and surprised. There wasn’t anything else to notice because that was what she truly felt: shocked and worried.
"No," Fil answered after a full minute of silence. "I dumped him."
"You?"
"Mhm."
"Why?"
"Well." Fil sighed deeply once more, casting her eyes down, smiling bitterly. "He broke my trust."
Marianne knitted her brows, biting her inner bottom lips mildly. ’What did she mean by that?’ she wondered. ’Did she find out about Vincent and me?’
Myriads of thoughts surged in Marianne’s head in a split-second timeframe. Fil always came to her whenever she had problems or whenever she could no longer carry the burden on her shoulders. However, Fil might have come today because she wanted to confront her. Not that Marianne was scared of Fil, but she didn’t want the confrontation to happen in the building.
People’s ears in the entertainment industry were sharp. Their minds were also creative. It wouldn’t be hard for them to put two and two together. The next she knew, a blind item was already circulating on the internet and the entertainment circle.
"He thinks I’m cheating," Fil confessed after a prolonged silence. "He was so sure I was."
The lines between Marianne’s brows deepened, eyes back on Fil’s side profile. "He, what?"
"It’s ridiculous." Fil smiled bitterly, facing her friend once again. "Me? With another man? If the man I loved for so long couldn’t even kiss me until marriage, what makes him think I’d let others touch me?"
A thin layer of tears coated her eyes, and her voice cracked. "Vincent knows that trust is a huge thing for me. I don’t require him to give me all his time; I don’t even make a fuss if he goes on without contacting me for days. Even when he forgets my birthday or anniversary, it’s okay. I can always overlook all those little things."
"I trusted him, and yet, he couldn’t trust me," she added, and this time, a tear rolled down her cheeks. "He chose to hurt me over groundless accusations. I am the one who ended our relationship, but I am also the one who’s hurting the most."
"Anne..." Fil sobbed, her tears blurring her vision. "What am I going to do now?"
Marianne frowned, staring at the tears streaming down her friend’s face.
"Oh, Fil," she called sweetly, stretching her arms to Fil as she moved closer. She carefully pulled Fil into her embrace, rubbing her back soothingly. "I’m sorry this happened."
