The Devil's Good Girl
Chapter 73: Boyfriend

Chapter 73: Boyfriend

"Marcus, can we meet today? It’s just that I need a bit of help."

Marcus paced back and forth in his office, tapping the end of his phone against his palm. Fil called over fifteen minutes ago, asking him for some help. She didn’t tell him the details as she said it was much better to say it in person. She also told him not to rush if he had important meetings at hand.

Marcus always had a lot of important work to do. He was an heir to a giant corporation.

"Why did she call me, though?" he wondered, stopping in his spot. "She rarely calls me."

Marcus gazed down at his phone, weighing his options for her invitation. If this was before, he wouldn’t outright decline her request. But he would give her a lot of warnings that he might not make it. But earlier, he just told her, "Sure," before he could even think about it.

"Tsk. What’s wrong with me?" He scratched his temple with the round edge of his phone. "Why did I agree so fast?"

Marcus checked the time, buying himself some time. It would look too obvious if he rushed to her now. He didn’t want to give her a different idea.

[You won’t betray Vincent by seeing me behind his back, will you?]

Suddenly, Fil’s words during his party resounded in his mind. Marcus paused for a second, recalling that look in her eyes and that mesmerizing yet subtle smile on her face. He gulped a mouthful as he imagined how she tucked a small portion of her hair behind her ear and how her hand subconsciously caressed the side of her neck.

Fil was a walking temptation.

It wouldn’t be nice to see her all alone. Especially if Marcus knew he was "sort" of attracted to her. She was Vincent’s fiancee.

[Vincent is cheating behind her back and even takes her side chick to our meet-ups. He’s been treating Marianne like his girlfriend. Even his family knows about it — except his grandfather. They welcome Marianne with open arms and treat Fil with nothing but disrespect.]

[What’s so bad if she cheats on him? If he can do it, she can too! That’s what I call fair.]

Marcus held his breath as Michael’s devious and careless remarks also rang in his head. His last tense conversation with Vincent also didn’t help. The man hadn’t apologized to him, nor had he tried to reach out.

"No." Marcus shook his head and closed his eyes. "Even if Vince pisses me off, I’m not going after one of my friend’s girls."

Marcus repeated those words in his head like a mantra. When he thought he fully convinced himself, he held his phone to leave Fil a message.

[To: Fil

Fil, I’m sorry. I can’t make it. Something came up. But if you really need my help, then just give me a call. I’ll do what I can.]

Marcus typed without a second hesitation. However, when Marcus was about to send that message, his thumb hovered over the send button. Hesitation slowly lit up in his eyes.

"Damn it," he grumbled quietly, erasing the initial message and then typing another one. "I’m on my way."

*******

Marcus had to admit Fil just become someone who suited his type of woman. Smart, delicate, beautiful, and with a good figure. However, that wasn’t the reason he changed his mind and drove two hours to see her.

Fil had always helped him in the past. He kept telling her he would repay all the help if she needed his help, but she never asked for one. Never. Thus, if he refused her request, she might not help him in the future. And this wasn’t just an excuse he concocted in his head. Regardless of how attractive she had become, Marcus would never go crazy for a woman.

After an hour’s trip to the location she sent him, Marcus slowed down as he approached the town’s square. Ducking his head and looking around, he was almost in awe.

"This place looks like a ghost town," he muttered, catching a familiar figure standing in the middle of the square with a few people. "That’s her."

Marcus slowly parked to the side, unbuckling his seat, and stepped out. But instead of going to her, he leaned his back against the driver’s seat door.

’So, she’s working, huh?’he thought, crossing his arms underneath his chest. ’She’s wearing something... different, too.’

Unlike the revealing dress she wore at the party, Fil wore a pair of black trousers, a white inner top, and a fitted blazer. It was an ordinary smart casual, matched with a high bun. Yet, despite this simple attire, why did she still stand out?

"Smart... pretty," he blurted out unconsciously, eyes fixed on Fil. "Confident."

His eyelids drooped, watching Fil talked to a couple of men. From the looks of it, she was the one leading the conversation. It was an admirable sight to behold, especially with such a pretty face. It sort of made him a little proud, which was strange.

"Yes. I’ll keep in contact and thank you for your input." Fil smiled brightly, shaking her hands at the men she was just talking to.

"It’s our pleasure, Engineer Lovin. We can also assist you in touring the town if you need it. After all, there were still some residents who hadn’t vacated their homes. But do not worry, it’s not like they weren’t planning to leave."

Fil listened to the chief of the town, who would assist them with anything that was needed for the first phase of the redevelopment. Jackson mentioned these guys to her, telling her he had given them some things to do as the former chairman of the town.

"I would love that," Fil replied amicably, only to notice a figure from the corner of her eyes. When she turned and saw Marcus waving at her mildly, she smiled. She then faced the chief and his colleagues and said, "Chief, let’s take a break first."

The chief glanced in Marcus’s direction and chuckled. "Haha. It’s alright, Miss Lovin. We’re not in a hurry, and we’re only here to assist you with everything we can. Call us if you need us. We’ll just be in the office."

"We should’ve known that you’re engaged with that ring in your hand, Miss Lovin," the other person quipped, telling her to go to her boyfriend while they returned to their temporary office.
