The Devil's Good Girl -
Chapter 72: Giving face to karma
Chapter 72: Giving face to karma
"It’s just how the way of the world."
It was just one sentence, but Fil felt every fiber of her body shudder upon hearing it. How many times had she said those exact words in the past? There were many times she lost count. But she knew once in her life she had to say those words to make herself believe or make herself feel better.
But the world had never changed, and it might never be.
The technology, infrastructure, and trends might have continuously evolved. But the nature of humans hadn’t. In this world, no matter how you decorate and change it, it is always the same.
It was always a dog-eat-dog.
The rich and strong trampled the weak; they could hurt and harm them and get away with it.
It was sickening.
And she was tired of it.
She was tired of being powerless, of being the prey, and of watching those close to her suffer at the hands of the wicked. For sure, those who put Kenzo through this hell didn’t even lose a wink of sleep.
"It’s okay," Kenzo spoke again after a prolonged silence. "I’ll be fine. Knowing those jerks, they won’t do it again. And even if they do, I won’t let them. I’ll run as quickly as I can."
His mouth stretched into a playful grin. "I can’t fight back, you know. Because if I do, they’d sue me."
"You can’t sue them, but if it happened to them, they’ll sue you?" Fil clicked her tongue, managing to calm the rage swelling up her chest. "Gosh. You’re quite hopeless."
"I am and it sucks, but I have to suck it up." He shrugged. "Anyway, I’m more worried about you. You knew Marianne and Vincent were having an affair? So that rumor last week..."
"I’ve known for quite some time now."
"Won’t you break off the engagement?"
"For what?" Fil slowly rose from her seat, picking up her purse. "Breaking off the engagement only meant they could be together without shame. They can hold hands in public, post pictures together, and do what lovers do for everyone to see. I can’t give that key to them. They should stay hidden."
"Fil."
"I won’t worry about you just like what you want me to," she continued, not giving him a chance to give her some quick pep talk. "So, don’t worry about me either. Just keep it our little secret. I’m fine — I’ll be."
Fil took a step back and sighed. "I’ll head off now, but I’ll make sure to tell Olivia that you still want to be on the team. Focus on your recovery."
With that being said, Fil turned on her heel. As soon as she turned her back on him, the subtle smile on her face disappeared without a trace. All that was left was malice, anger, darkness.

Kenzo kept his eyes on Fil’s back, watching her leave without looking back. Even when she left his line of sight and closed the door behind her, he kept staring at it.
"Fil," he whispered worriedly. "Is that why... you’ve changed? I can barely recognize you now."
For some, Fil’s change was only on the outside. But for someone who had been too close with her all these years, Kenzo knew it was not only her appearance that had changed. He couldn’t pinpoint it exactly before, but now, he finally understood what else had changed in her.
It wasn’t her personality that changed; it was her attitude. It was how she perceived and reacted to things. She was more decisive now and less worried about other people’s thoughts. Not that she would purposely say rude things, but she would now speak her mind regardless if it would hurt.
"I guess I can’t blame her," he muttered, sighing heavily. "Vincent... she loved him for the longest time, but he not only cheated on her, but he chose a person whom she saw as her sister to cheat with."
Kenzo clenched his teeth, more angry at Vincent and Marianne than the ones who beat him up. "Fil, just what are you planning now?"

When Fil reached her truck, she stayed in the driver’s seat. Gripping the steering wheel, she was almost hyperventilating at the thought of Kenzo. A huge part of her heart understood why Kenzo wouldn’t take it to the heart if his family settled. At the end of the day, what he said made a lot of sense.
Arkwright Corporation.
Even if Kenzo’s family weren’t easy people to cross, Kenzo was kind enough to think of the bigger picture. He wouldn’t want his family to go through the hassle of the long process of a court battle. Not just the hassle, but also, all his family’s dirty laundry would be air-dried.
"Karma?" she breathed out. "I should’ve known no one had ever seen its face."
A snicker escaped her, high in emotion, heart in turmoil. She didn’t have to hear Kenzo’s story to make her angry like this. However, the second she heard the truth coming out of his mouth, it was like someone splashed her with a bucket of cold water.
"That’s the last straw," she ground her teeth. "You all will not get away from this. Even if I have to lend my face to karma."
A glint flickered across her eyes, pushed to the cliff that she had been holding on to. Perhaps this was the last straw she needed. Just a tiny little push to give her enough justification. Vincent and Marianne, and all those greedy bastards who had been basking in the glory of the wealth they earned from exploiting the needy, needed to be taught a lesson.
A lesson in which they couldn’t buy their way out.
"I don’t feel any more remorse for all of them," she whispered. "I will never give you the last laugh."
Fil closed her eyes as she drew a deep breath. She then breathed it out through her lips. When she reopened her eyes, Fil calmed her trembling body and reached for her purse. Taking out her phone, she called Marcus’s contact number.
Her expression was dark, listening to the sound of rings before it was picked up.
"Fil?"
The dark expression on her face remained for a few seconds before a smile turned up on her face.
"Marcus, can you meet me today?"
