Chapter 69: Let’s take a walk?
"Just so you know, liking someone after a long-term relationship isn’t a sin."
Fil stared blankly at the ceiling, recalling Elijah’s comment before her little brother fell asleep. She tried sleeping, but couldn’t. Aside from the growing fear of another nightmare, her mind just kept repeating her little brother’s remarks.
"What does he know?" she murmured, rolling to her side until she could see Elijah on the floor. "You’re so young. Don’t tell me you’re dating already?"
Fil blew the stray hairs from her face, sighing and shaking her head mildly.
’It’s not like that’s the issue here,’ she thought, laying on her back once more. ’The Heaven and Earth part isn’t either.’
Traditional elites probably wanted someone in their family who came from a wealthy family. Just like the Hale. However, Fil found that sort of mentality hilarious. If that was ever an issue for her, she wouldn’t even dream of Vincent. She was smart, a hard worker, and kind. She always thought that was good enough for society.
So, what was stopping her from having any other feelings for Jackson?
Aside from the fact they just recently knew each other, she hadn’t completely healed. She would still get hurt whenever she saw Vincent’s hypocrisy. The thought of Marianne and Vincent continuing their affair while he was trying to sweet talk her still makes her angry.
’That’s why I took him here, even though I think it’s a huge gamble.’Her eyes softened a bit. ’Because I know I can’t give him what he wants. At least, not right now.’
He wanted to be loved, but Fil knew she couldn’t give that unconditionally. Therefore, she introduced him to her family, who could love him just as much as they loved her. It was the least she could do for now.
As Fil thought about her relationship and feelings, she heard a quiet knock on the door. It was faint, but with this silence in the night, it was easily detected. Deep lines appeared between her brows, sitting upright slowly. She carefully flung her legs out of the bed, tiptoeing her way to the door without waking up Elijah.
Another faint knock came through the door when she reached it. Opening the door carefully, she tilted her head while her body hid behind it.
"Jack?" she whispered, gazing at him from up and down. She pressed her lips into a thin line, realizing just how talented Jackson was. How could he make these worn-out clothes look like they came straight from the fashion show? If this wasn’t called talent, Fil didn’t know what it was.
Jackson stood in front of the door quietly, letting her assess him from up and down.
"Are you done checking on me?" he asked huskily. "Do I look good in it?"
"Tss." Fil carefully stepped out, closing the door behind her. "What do you want?"
"I can’t sleep."
"Oh." She nodded, thinking Elijah’s room was quite small for him. Even her room feels smaller now than it was before.
"And my hips hurt," he added, making her look up at him suspiciously. "My back too. I feel like I dislocated them."
"Jack, do you think I’d buy that?" she leaned closer, asking out of pure curiosity. "I know you weren’t that hurt."
"Should I push you off the railing and see if it will hurt?"
Fil puffed her cheeks, rendered speechless. She might be crazy enough to sleep with him at first sight, but she wouldn’t let him push her off the railings voluntarily.
"I didn’t mean it," she grumbled. "And I already said I was sorry."
She took a deep breath and faced him once more. "But even if I’m sorry, I will not follow you into my brother’s room."
"Huh?"
"You want me to go in there with you, isn’t that right?"
"..." Jackson didn’t respond. "I would be lying if I said it didn’t cross my mind."
"This is my parent’s home. Hadn’t you learned your lesson? What if Eli suddenly wakes up and sees that I’m not in the bedroom?" she explained. "Pushing you off the railing won’t save us, then. I might have to jump out of the window or whatever."
"Sweetheart, what were you thinking?" he asked, tilting his head to the side. "I said it crossed my mind, but I didn’t say I would act on it."
"Oh."
"And even if I asked you to go to my current bedroom, I am not planning to touch you. The poor bed might break, and I don’t want to hassle your father into fixing it."
"Oh!" Fil blinked, trying her best to keep a straight face. But her cheeks continued to turn red. ’Am I becoming really rotten? Why do I always think he will ravage my body if there’s just the two of us?’
He already proved he could last a night without making out. That already showed he could control himself whenever he wanted to.
"Do you think I won’t fuck you hard after a night of abstinence?" he continued in a matter-of-factly tone, making her face crumple in dismay. "I’m afraid if we do it tonight, not only your brother will wake up but also your parents. We might as well do it in the barn. You can scream all night and the cows will only tell you, Moo."
Fil took a careful step and held his hand. "Jack, can you please stop speaking your thoughts aloud? I get it. You don’t have to spell out that I’m stupid."
"Heh." He smirked triumphantly. "I just figured I should tell you straight instead of giving you ideas I do not want."
"Goodness." Fil touched her cheeks with the back of her hand. "This is embarrassing."
She huffed and glared at him. "So?" she hummed. "If that isn’t your plan, then why were you knocking? How did you know I wasn’t asleep?"
"Gut feeling," he shrugged and then held his hand to her. "Let’s take a walk?"
"Tonight?"
"It might be dark outside, but in the city, this time is still too early." He wiggled his brows knowingly. "The only difference is that there’s less pollution in here. We might as well breathe in as much fresh air as we can before we leave tomorrow."
His mouth stretched into a wide grin while hesitation showed in her eyes. But in the end, she smiled back and clasped his hand.
A night walk wasn’t a bad idea.
