Chapter 65: Is he the reason you want to call off the engagement?

"Elliot!" Simon, Fil’s father, yelled at his son, who was sneaking out of their home. "Where are you going? I told you to help me out of here before you go!"

Elijah winced as he looked back at his father near the barn. "Mom told me to run her an errand!"

"Ah!" Simon nodded in understanding, waving. "Fine. Go!"

Elijah sighed as he watched his father carry a stack of hays to the back of his truck.

"Never mind," he grumbled, jogging to where his father was.

"Oh, why are you here?" asked Simon. "Do what your mother told you to do."

"It’s okay. She’s only asking me to ask the neighbor if they wanted some cupcakes. She’s making some to send to Fil," Elijah explained as he rushed to the stack of hays to help his father load it in the truck.

Simon smiled subtly. "Son, if you want to go somewhere and it’s important, you should go."

"It’s okay. I’m just studying for the college entrance exam, but I feel like nothing is going in my head." Elijah lifted the hay with great difficulty but was still able to load it into the truck. "This is so heavy."

Elijah gazed at his father, who was laughing while loading his truck. Simon made it look easy, but then again, he had been doing this his entire life. Which explained why his father had so much strength.

"Dad, can I go with you when you visit Fil?" Elijah asked out of plain curiosity. "Once I passed the test, I might be moving to the city."

"Well, ask your mother."

"She told me to ask you."

"She did?" Simon paused, squinting his eyes at his son. "I guess you can. Your sister is probably busy, though. So, don’t make a huge fuss in her place."

Elijah grinned excitedly, lifting another stack to help his father. "Heep ho!" he exclaimed as he loaded the stack.

"That’s enough now," said Simon, patting his son’s shoulder. "Thanks, bud. I’ll deliver these first. You should accompany your mother or go out with your friends."

"All my friends are studying for the entrance exam."

"Why don’t you invite them over?" Simon inquired. "It’s better to study together, so you can help them out."

"They said they only feel demotivated whenever they study with me."

"Why?"

Elijah shrugged. "I don’t know. They said I make it look so easy. I understand them. You carry all this stuff all by yourself and make it look so easy."

"Haha! If you do these things all your life, it becomes easier." Simon laughed out loud proudly but didn’t ask his son to help more on their farm. Unlike Fil, who enjoyed accompanying him in the past, Elijah had quite a weak body.

"Anyway, go back inside and help your mother. I’ll come back in a bit." Simon waved dismissively, about to go inside the truck to deliver them where it was needed. However, just as he opened the door, he stopped.

Simon narrowed his eyes at the truck making its way into their house. "That’s your sister’s truck," he muttered, stopping Elijah, who stood several steps from his father.

"Mhm. That’s hers, but who is that man driving it?" Elijah cocked his head to the side.

Before the father and son knew it, they approached the truck until they reached the large lawn in front of their house. As they approached, they saw Fil jumping out of the front passenger seat and then an unfamiliar man from the driver’s seat.

"What in the world?" Elijah’s mouth gaped, looking at the man with his sister. "My new brother-in-law?"

"Dad!" Fil called with a smile, walking toward Simon to meet them halfway.

"Fil." Simon smiled in confusion. "What are you doing here? Didn’t you just visit one or two weeks ago?"

"I told myself I’m going to visit you more often." Fil pouted. "Why, Dad? Don’t you want me to come here?"

"No, of course not. But who..." Simon trailed off, shifting his attention to this incredibly beautiful man with her.

"Jackson Sisson, Sir." Jackson smiled politely, offering his hand to him.

"Uh..." Simon was rendered speechless. He was a man and already at the half of his life, but this was the first time he saw a man that could be so beautiful.

Did he say his name is Jackson Sisson?

"Simon, Fil’s father." Simon was about to reach for Jackson’s hand, only to realize they were dirty. "Uh. Ha ha. My hands are dirty. We just finished loading my truck when you came."

"It’s alright." Jackson nodded reassuringly. "I don’t mind."

Simon raised his brows and chuckled, grabbing Jackson’s hand tightly. "Nice to meet you. Are you... Fil’s new friend?"

"Actually —"

"He’s our company’s client!" Fil chimed in before Jackson could say any of his nonsense.

"Your client?" Simon furrowed his brows, releasing Jackson’s hand. Jackson glanced at his hand with a tinge of surprise but then didn’t say anything about her father’s strong grip.

’She also has a strong grip,’ thought Jackson. ’Considering they farm for a living, it’s not surprising.’

"Mhm!" Fil nodded, stepping beside Jackson with her palms in front of Jackson. "I took Mr. Sisson in here because of a project I’m currently working on."

"And why would you have to show your client our house?" Elijah inquired suspiciously.

"It’s an engineer thing," she lied. "He was curious how I got the idea of my designs, so I took him here to show him."

"Oh..." Simon nodded in understanding. "I see."

Elijah, on the other hand, just narrowed his eyes. There was a part of him who believed in Fil, but the other part of him screamed suspicion. Why would she have to show him where she was born and raised to her client?

"We brought something on our way here. I hope you will like them," Jackson politely remarked, almost making Fil jolt in surprise. "I’ll get them."

"Okay." Fil nodded, watching Jackson get on the backseat to grab the things they bought on their way here.

"Sis, tell me." Elijah hurriedly rushed to his sister’s side. "Is he the reason you want to call off the engagement?"

"Eli, didn’t you hear your sister? He is her client. Conduct yourself properly or you might mess up with your sister’s project," Simon whispered scolding. He then smiled at Fil. "Are you going inside?"

"Well, we’ve been on the road for a while and it’s really hot. So, we’re going to rest here before driving around the town."

"I see, I see." Simon smiled happily. "Very well. Good thing your mother is making snacks. Eli, help your sister and Mr. Sisson inside. And don’t tease them."

Elijah frowned deeply. "Fine."

"I’ll deliver these first. Tell me if you need anything or if you need to check some areas closely. I can accompany you."

"Yes, Dad." Fil smiled from ear to ear. She turned to Jackson when the man straightened his back, carrying some groceries and gifts they bought together. "My mom is inside. She’s making snacks. You might like them."

With that being said, Jackson followed Fil to her parent’s house while Fil led the way.

"Wait, sis. You haven’t introduced me..." Elijah trailed off, frowning as he watched the two head inside. "Is he just her client? But what are the gifts for? It just makes it look like he’s trying to impress his in-laws."
