The Devil's Good Girl
Chapter 57: He needs you more than you need him.

Chapter 57: He needs you more than you need him.

"Let go of my fiancee, Marcus."

Vincent took large steps toward Marcus and Fil, stopping a step from them. His eyes slowly went wide, making Marcus release Fil’s arm.

"Look, man, it’s not what you think it is," Marcus raised his hands over his shoulder. "I’m just trying to help her out."

Vincent’s frown deepened, shifting his eyes to Fil. When his eyes landed on her, she tilted her head a little to the side. Looking at her clueless expression, he huffed deeply and controlled himself. There was no way Marcus would make a move on her. Even if Fil had changed and had made everyone turn their heads on her, she would always be Fil.

"Did something happen?" she asked, blinking innocently.

"I’ll take you home," he said, taking her hand and facing Marcus. "Don’t cross the line, Marc."

Marcus frowned, knowing to himself he only helped Fil. However, he said nothing in return because he couldn’t deny his heart skipped a beat for a moment.

"Let’s go now, Fil," Vincent cast Fil a look. "I’ll drive you home."

Fil pursed her lips and nodded, acting like she couldn’t sense the brief tension between the two. "Thank you, Marcus. I had a lot of fun tonight."

"Hehe. No worries." Marcus smiled back at her, only for his smile to vanish when his eyes moved to Vincent again. "Tch."

Vincent sneered but didn’t want to argue with him in front of her. After all, he knew what he saw wasn’t cheating. Marcus might be telling the truth; he just helped Fil. However, Vincent was quite too familiar with this sequence of events. This is how Marianne and Vincent’s affair started.

"We’re going."

"The hell?" Anton scrunched up his nose, laying lazily on the lazy boy’s couch. "And he took off just like that?"

Marcus sat on the other couch, chugging down his drink out of frustration. He huffed and hissed, recalling that accusive look Vincent gave him before they left.

"Haha!" Michael laughed out loud. Just like Anton, he was almost melting on the other couch with how relaxed his body felt. "That dude is scared of his own ghost. He cheats on her, but is scared to wear a green hat."

"It’s annoying that after I covered for him, he will act as if I am the one doing something horrible to Fil," Marcus expressed in frustration. "What did he want me to do? Let her fall?"

Michael arched a brow. "Would you help her if she didn’t suddenly become a hottie?"

"Of course!" Marcus exclaimed. "I always helped Fil even back then."

"But you don’t hold her for that long," Anton casually pointed out. "Also, you use that as points to earn her favors. How many projects did you get credit for because of her?"

"She wanted to help me," Marcus argued. "And also, I didn’t steal all the credits. She just had to skim through it."

"In any case, Vincent isn’t wrong," Michael remarked with a shrug. "Somehow, you found her attractive."

"What?"

"Come on, man. I know you." Michael chuckled. "Fil is your type. I mean, we all didn’t know what she had been hiding beneath her grandma’s clothes until now. I bet Vincent didn’t know as well. That guy hadn’t even kissed her. She’s been blue balling him for years."

Marcus opened his mouth to argue, but his voice was stuck in his throat. His mind drifted to the memory of Fil and their brief interaction tonight. His expression turned solemn a little, remembering how she looked so beautiful and desirable at every angle.

"I don’t see anything wrong with it," Anton commented languidly. "Come to think of it. Vincent and Marianne are screwing each other behind her back. And even with those articles, Fil didn’t believe them. Poor little Fil."

The corner of Anton’s eyes turned red, almost welling up at the thought. "I pity her."

"Damn... are you crying?" Michael laughed out loud. "Dude, you’re high."

Marcus shook his head. "You are both high."

"I am, but I’m not crying like that guy." Michael shamelessly wiggled his brows. "Anyway, I don’t see a problem with it."

"A problem with what?"

"Fil and you."

"Mike, are you crazy?"

"Vincent is cheating behind her back and even takes her side chick to our meet-ups. He’s been treating Marianne like his girlfriend. Even his family knows about it — except his grandfather. They welcome Marianne with open arms and treat Fil with nothing but disrespect," Michael prattled carelessly. "What’s so bad if she cheats on him? If he can do it, she can too! That’s what I call fair."

"Your brain is full of crap, isn’t it?" Anton chimed in. "Do you think Fil will cheat on Vincent? Even if she changed, she’s still the same Filomena. Vincent is her world."

"And that world will crash once she finds out her beloved fiance and trusted best friend had been sharing wild nights together," Michael argued like a devil. "If you don’t want to, I will."

"I don’t want to be friends with you anymore," Anton gasped. "This is why if I get a girlfriend I want to commit, I won’t introduce her to all of you."

"Come on, man. I won’t touch my brother’s girl."

"I don’t believe you!"

"Understandable. My sex appeal is hard to resist."

Anton and Michael continued to throw their nonsense here and there while Marcus went quiet. He swirled the whiskey in the glass, deep in thought.

Why do I have to feel guilty?’he wondered to himself. ’He’s acting like a protective fiance when, in fact, he’s been cheating on her. I’ve covered for him many times, keeping Fil busy whenever he and Marianne suddenly disappear together to relieve themselves.’

The more Marcus thought about it, the deeper his frown was. He did everything because Vincent was his closest friend — his partner in crime. However, Vincent looked at him as if he was the one who crossed the line.

"That fucker..." Marcus hissed, earning a look from Anton and Michael. "Did he think I’m a pushover?"

Michael shrugged as he cast Anton a knowing look. The latter shrugged back, telling them this was not his business. But unlike Anton, who wanted to stay on the safe side, Michael liked to stir trouble.

"Vincent had been growing cocky and thinks he can get away with everything." Michael slowly peeled his back from the couch, leaning forward until his arms were on his legs. He wiggled his brows as Marcus set his eyes on him. "I’m not saying you sleep with her, but he can’t also keep all the women for himself."

The corners of his mouth stretched deviously. "He always thinks he’s above everyone, when, in fact, the Arkwright Corporation had been there even before the Hale Family could make it to 500. He needs you more than you need him."

Marcus, of all people, knew Michael was just like a devil telling him to be bad. However, Michael had a point. Vincent had been acting too cocky because all of them were chill about many things. But at the end of the day, Marcus’s family fortune was much more than the Hale’s.

If there should be a lackey in here, that shouldn’t be Marcus.
