Chapter 52: Better get used to it
"Is that Fil?"
"What?" One of the females in the group scoffed in disbelief, eyes glued on Fil. "That’s... Fil?"
For a moment, everyone could only stare in Fil’s direction. A mix of disbelief and surprise twinkled in their eyes, thinking of the ’boring woman’ they all remembered. Some of them even doubted their eyes. There was no way Fil would wear such revealing clothes. Even though the dress only displayed the beautiful curves she hid all these years, wearing this would be a sin for her.
"Damn..." Michael breathed out, about to get up from his seat to see her up close. But just as he was about to get up, Vincent sprung from his seat and marched in Fil’s direction.
"Hell no," Anton whispered, hitting Marcus’s side with his elbow. "Marcus, tell me I’m dreaming. There’s no way that’s our mascot."
Marcus didn’t respond, staring at Fil in a daze. "I don’t know."

Meanwhile...
"Fil, did you see that?" Elise was in awe as she caught a glimpse of a famous actor hanging out by the bar station. She tugged Fil’s arm in a hurry, barely keeping herself from squealing. "Oh, god... he’s so handsome in person."
Elise looked at Fil and furrowed her brows. "Ah, wait. Where’s your fiance, Fil?"
Fil looked around once more, smiling when she caught someone approaching from the farthest table of the poolside.
"There he is," Fil remarked, making Elise turn her head to see the face of the company’s mystery fiance.
Elise squinted her eyes as the farthest part of the pool was a little darker than the rest of the area. When she saw the man’s face, deep lines appeared between her brows.
"Isn’t that..." Elise gasped in disbelief, remembering this man’s face because Fil had been reading articles about him all day. "No way."
"Fil, you made it!" Vincent smiled in relief, stopping in front of Fil. He had his hands stretched to Fil, pausing mid-air as he gazed down at her. "Wow. You look amazing."
"Thanks." Fil smiled charmingly, making his heart flutter. "By the way, I brought a friend."
"Huh?" Vincent shifted his eyes to the woman standing beside Fil. "She is...?"
"Vincent, meet Elise. Elise this is my fiance."
"Elise." Elise awkwardly offered her hand. "My name’s Elise... sir."
"Sir?"
Fil chuckled, reaching to hold Elise’s hand. "Elise, you don’t have to call him, sir. Vincent is only a year older than me."
"Uh... sorry." Elise cleared her throat. "I didn’t mean to offend you. I’m just trying to be polite."
"It’s alright, dear." Fil held Elise’s hand, planting a soft and slow kiss on Elise’s hand. "Just relax."
Elise’s breath hitched, flustered at Fil’s action. Although it appeared like a mother, kissing her child’s hand to soothe her, she felt seduced. Was it because of Fil’s appearance? Or was it the look in her eyes? Elise wasn’t the only one surprised at Fil’s action, Vincent and everyone who had their eyes glued to her.
"Anyway, you know Elise, right?" Fil snapped her attention back to Vincent, acting innocently. "I told you about her many times."
"Ahh... of course." Vincent laughed awkwardly, offering Elise a charming look. "I’m glad to finally meet you."
"Me too."
"Where are your friends?" Fil tilted her head to the side, smirking briefly when she heard a familiar voice behind Vincent.
"Fil!" Marcus advanced in their direction, stopping beside Vincent. "You made it!"
"How can I miss it?" Fil smiled brightly. "Vincent won’t stop talking about it the other time we’re together."
"Hehe. That’s because you missed a lot of gatherings."
"I did?" Fil tilted her head to the side. "I never heard any invitation, though."
Marcus bit his tongue, remembering those gatherings were mostly for them. They couldn’t invite Fil if Vincent was taking Marianne with him. Not that they thought of inviting Fil in the first place.
"Haha. I’m kidding." Fil chuckled, covering her lips with the back of her hand. "I think Vincent told me about it, but I was too busy to go."
Lie... and they knew it was.
"Well, I’m not surprised. A talented senior like you is surely busy," Marcus humored, riding on the lie she just told him. "Anyway, join us. The squad is at the back."
"Marcus, I’m bringing a plus one with me. That’s alright with you, right?"
Marcus cast the cute lady Fil brought with her and smiled. "Of course."
"Thanks." Just when Fil took a step, Vincent held her arm to stop her.
"Marcus, why don’t you go first?" Vincent cast Marcus a knowing look. "Take Fil’s friend with you. Fil and I have something to talk about."
"Oh... right." Marcus rocked his head, only to move his gaze to Fil when she chuckled. ’How can her chuckle also change?’
But then again, they never heard Fil genuinely chuckle in the past. If anything, they simply thought even her laughter was awkward.
"Vin." Fil took a step, planting her fingertips on his chest. "There’s nothing we have to talk about."
She slowly caressed his chest until she clipped his tie with her fingers, eyes still on Vincent. "I trust you. That rumor is insane. There’s no way my fiance and best friend are fooling behind my back, right?"
’What?’ Elise mentally gasped, staring at Fil with wide eyes. ’Fiance and best friend?’
"Fil," Vincent whispered, his breath growing jagged at how close she was to him. This wasn’t the first time she fixed his tie, but it was the first time he felt a reaction in his groin.
"Your tie was crooked," Fil quipped. "Now it’s fixed."
Her lips stretched playfully, enjoying the look on his face. She patted his chest and turned, facing Marcus, who never took his eyes off of her.
"Let’s go?" She grinned until her eyes were squinting.
"Uh, haha, of course." Marcus cleared his throat, turning his back on them to escort them to the squad. But as he turned around, he scolded himself for being mesmerized by his best friend’s fiancee.
Soon, Fil together with Elise, Vincent, and the host of tonight’s party joined Vincent’s friends. Standing in front of them, Fil slowly raised her brows. All of them were staring at her, lips parted in disbelief at the woman standing before them.
"What’s with that look?" Fil humored, scanning everyone’s faces. "Why do you look like you’ve seen a ghost?"
"No way..." Anton blurted out under his breath, gulping to moisten his throat.
Fil smacked her lips before her eyes landed on the end of the table. Her smile stretched broader.
"Anne!" Fil clasped Elise’s hand and rushed to sit beside Marianne. "Oh, I missed you!"
"Fil." Marianne forced out a smile, only for it to crack when he heard another snide remark from Michael.
"Haha. Fil, you shouldn’t sit there," said Michael, earning Fil and Marianne’s attention. Even Elise, who could barely keep up with Fil’s fiance’s circle of friends couldn’t help but look in Michael’s direction.
"Have mercy on Marianne." Michael jerked his chin. "She looks like an older sister if you two sit together. That one cutie you brought with you isn’t helping either."
He raised a finger and pointed at the three of them. "The big sister, the hot sister, and the youngest."
Marianne’s smile immediately disappeared while others held their laughter back. Fil, on the other hand, frowned.
"That’s a mean joke, Michael." Fil sighed, hugging Marianne’s arm as she moved closer. "Why do you always pick on her?"
No matter what Fil said in return, everyone couldn’t disagree with Michael this time. Now that the two were sitting together, Marianne looked... so-so. Even though no one was bold enough to say it like Michael, Marianne felt it. Yet, she could only smile despite the uncomfortable situation.
"Just ignore him, Anne." Fil offered a kind smile, squeezing Marianne’s hand reassuringly. But in the back of her mind, she couldn’t help but laugh in ridicule. "He didn’t mean it. It’s just a joke, right, Michael?"
"What can I say? I’m the joker in this group." Michael winked at Fil. "It’s my job to lighten up the mood."
’See these people aren’t your friends, Marianne.’Fil kept her innocent smile. ’And you’re not the only one who can put someone in an uncomfortable situation and smile innocently. You better get used to their hypocrisy, disgusting manners, and below-the-belt jokes. I’m just starting.’
