Chapter 40: I was hard the whole time, sweetheart.
"I can’t believe you." Jackson shook his head, snapping his eyes at Fil, who was taking the seat across from him. "I felt like a fool jumping in joy when you agreed to have a date with me. Silly me. I should’ve known you had ulterior motives when you chose this place."
Fil smiled. "I’m lucky, said a certain person. I’m trying to see where can I push that luck."
"My, my." Jackson pressed his fingertips on the bottom of the wineglass, sliding it in her direction. "So? How was that little show? Did you find it satisfactory?"
"Maybe?" Fil shrugged, taking the wineglass with a thanks. "He followed me all the way here. Based on where he hid, I’m sure he caught a glimpse of you."
Jackson chuckled in amusement, picking up his wineglass and raising it mildly. "I guess we have a lot of things to toast tonight."
Fil giggled, raising the wine glass mildly before taking a sip. Her brows rose as soon as the sweet taste of the wine exploded in her mouth.
"It’s sweet," she blurted out. "Taste like a juice with a mild punch."
"After last night, I ordered the lightest wine on their menu."
"This wine isn’t on their menu. I dine here once a month," she argued with a slight pout. "You brought this. Why lie?"
Jackson shrugged. "Because I wanted to impress you, but changed my mind."
"Are you angry?"
"I’m not, but I would’ve appreciated it if you told me I’m going to be used."
"I’m sorry." Fil pressed her lips into a thin line. "I won’t surprise you like this next time."
Jackson cupped his jaw, tilting his head a little. "That’s it?"
"Well." She cleared her throat and massaged her nape briefly. "And thank you?"
"For?"
"For... not crossing the line."
His brows elevated, blinking innocently, waiting for a more elaborate explanation. Even if he was a genius, he needed more than that vague sentence.
"I was surprised that you’re running such a big company, but I wasn’t as surprised as I expected myself to be. Considering your circle of friends, it shouldn’t be surprising," she explained. "But I thought you asked my boss to give up the project to me."
"Why would I do that?"
"I don’t know."
Jackson smiled and chuckled. "I wouldn’t deny I was tempted, but your boss is a wise woman. Moreover, I chose your firm because my goal is to see you more often, even if it’s in a work setting. I was sure you’d be in the team, so it doesn’t really matter if you lead it or not."
"Why are you so honest?" Fil touched her cheek with the back of her hand. She then peeked at him once again, forcing her words out of her throat. "My works are great, aren’t they?"
"I was impressed and shocked."
Her lips stretched until her teeth were fully displayed. "I know."
"Are we going to talk just that?" he inquired out of plain curiosity.
"No." Fil cleared her throat. "I was wondering about one thing."
"Pray tell."
"I wonder... what two people of opposite genders with clear attraction to one another do in a private place like this one," she fumbled with her words, feeling a little nervous. "Months ago, we had a company dinner. I saw Vincent in a restaurant just like this one."
Jackson listened patiently, guessing where this was heading.
"I thought he came to pick me up, so I got a little excited," she continued. "But then, I saw him getting into a private dining room just like this one. I didn’t see the woman’s face, but I was sure it was a woman. I saw her bag on the table."
Fil drew a deep breath as she recalled an almost forgotten memory from the past. "At the back of my head, I thought Vincent was seeing another woman. And that I caught him in the act. I didn’t know what to do, so I waited and waited."
"And when he came out? You saw the woman?"
She nodded. "It was Marianne. You can imagine how shocked I was, but... they told me they were just talking about a surprise for me. But because I caught them, they had to reveal the surprise prematurely so I wouldn’t misunderstand." She laughed bitterly, remembering how guilty she felt at that time.
"I was blinded and believed them." Fil slowly raised her eyes to Jackson, revealing the determination in her eyes. "What do you think they did back then? In a private place like this with only the two of them... what do you think happened?"
"Are you asking because you don’t know?" Jackson slowly pushed himself from the table, sauntering to her side. He gazes down at her, offering his hand. "Or were you looking for clarity?"
Fil’s lips quivered as she hesitatingly clasped his hand. "I’m curious." She slowly rose from her seat, standing before him squarely. "Just how satisfying it is to watch someone make a fool out of themselves that they couldn’t stop."
Jackson took a large step, forcing her to move back a little. Her bottom propped against the edge of the table, leaning back a little as he placed his hands on either side of her.
"Considering they both had urges and excitement for each other... any place is fine." He lowered his head until they were at eye level. "I didn’t order desserts because I have something else in mind, but I guess I’ll have you as a full-course meal."
"Will you... do it here?" she blurted out nervously, staring deep into his beautiful eyes. "What if someone comes?"
"Like your fiance?"
"The attendants."
He smirked.
"They look away," he whispered, leaning his face forward. "You have no idea that it took me a lifetime of self-control not to pin you down in that meeting room."
Jackson paused when his face was a palm length away from hers, reaching for her hand and guiding it to his groin. "I was hard the whole time, sweetheart."
