Chapter 39: His ghost haunting him

"Why isn’t she answering?" Vincent’s steps toward Serenity Hotel’s entrance slowed down. He gazed down at his phone, dialing Fil’s number one more time. The call went to voice mail after several rings.

"I’m here now. Where are you? Tell me your ETA."

Vincent stopped in front of the entrance, sending the voice mail, hoping she would reply soon. Knowing Fil, she would reach out to him as soon as possible.

"What’s wrong with her?" he muttered to himself, frowning. "She should be off work now."

His frown deepened, not liking how Fil replied to his messages a little later. She wouldn’t even pick up her phone as quickly as she used to.

"Is she really busy?" he wondered, resuming his tracks. "She’s probably driving."

Vincent shook his head mildly, offering the guard at the entrance a short smile. He went straight to the hotel’s buffet, going to his reserved table to wait for Fil. This was the first time he would have to wait for her, but that was fine. While waiting, he already ordered their meal, so once she arrived, they didn’t have to wait longer.

As Vincent waited for Fil, he busied himself on his phone, reading some papers from work. While doing so, a notification popped up on the upper part of the screen.

[From: Fil

I’m sorry, Vincent. I can’t make it. I have an emergency client meeting.]

His lips instantly curved down, calling her on instinct. He had been waiting for her for half an hour and she would tell him this now? Vincent’s patience burned at every ring. When the line connected, he huffed sharply.

"Fil, what are you saying?" he asked irritatingly. "I’m already here and you’re just going to say you can’t come after thirty minutes?"

"I’m really sorry, Vin."

"Sorry won’t make it, Fil. Come."

"I — I really can’t. This is important."

"More important than me?"

There was a moment of pause in the line before she whispered, "I’m sorry. I’ll make it up to you next time."

"Fil..."

"I’ll call you back later."

"Wait —" the line disconnected before he could even say anything. "Tch."

Vincent looked at his phone in disbelief. "What’s wrong with her?" he grumbled, glaring at his phone angrily. "First, she kept hanging up on me and then would answer my messages late. Is she neglecting me now?"

As someone who got used to the privilege of being someone’s priority, Vincent found her actions unpleasant. Although a part of him understood Fil wouldn’t stand him up if it wasn’t important, it still left a bitter taste in his mouth.

"I’m going to great lengths to make sure she looks presentable in the party, but she doesn’t seem to care." He snapped his tongue in irritation once more. "What a waste of time. I should just tell Grandpa she can’t make it..."

"Miss Lovin?"

Vincent trailed off as he heard an attendant’s voice not far away from him. His brows rose, thinking Fil was trying to surprise him. The corner of his lips curled up a little, turning his head to catch her red-handed to her ’surprise.’

"This way, please."

When Vincent turned his head and searched the area, all he saw was an attendant talking to someone at the entrance. The attendant motioned her hand, escorting the guest to another table. As soon as the attendant started walking, Vincent was granted access to see the person the attendant was talking to.

He squinted his eyes, assessing the beautiful woman following the attendant. "Fil?" he called under his breath, lips parting in surprise.

He followed Fil’s figure with his eyes, in disbelief at the clothes and style she was wearing. Even if her hairstyle changed and her attire strayed far away from her usual style, he recognized her. Fil and Vincent had known each other for a long time and had been in a relationship for years. He would never mistake her, even if she had a tattoo on her cheek.

"What in the world...?" Vincent listlessly pushed himself away from the table, following Fil. ’She said she can’t come because of a client meeting, but she’s here?’

Vincent stopped a few meters from Fil when the attendant stopped in front of the private dining rooms. Fil offered a quick smile to the attendant, nodding. The attendant didn’t stay long, leaving Fil standing in front of the private room.

’Who is she meeting and why is she so dressed up?’ he wondered, resuming his steps to catch up to her.

His steps, however, halted when Fil reached for the sliding door and opened it. The first thing Vincent caught inside was a hand pouring a glass on the empty glass. He froze, watching the hand put down the wine and motion it in Fil’s direction.

"Fil," he whispered, balling his hands into tight fists as Fil shut the door behind her. "What’s going on?"

Although he didn’t see the person she was meeting, he knew it was a man. He could tell by the slender hand and long fingers that whoever it was was quite young. Having these thoughts in mind, his breathing grew slower as he stumbled back.

"No." He shook his head, laughing to himself. "Fil wouldn’t do that to me."

She was crazy about him. They had been together for a long time and thus, he was confident Fil would never betray him. He was her world to the point it was suffocating. Even so, why the change? If he didn’t know Fil for a long time, he wouldn’t even recognize her.

She changed.

Not just her style, but the air of confidence around her was also different.

"Don’t jump to conclusion yet," he grumbled to himself, pinching the bridge of his nose in distress. After a moment, he fluttered his eyelashes and glared at the private dining place. "She better have a good explanation for this."

Vincent stayed in the same spot for minutes, staring intensely at the door. The more he looked at it, the more he was urged to march inside and see what was going on. He knew private places like that one. Anything could happen.

He knew that... because he had done it.

And now, his own ghost was haunting him.
