The Devil's Good Girl
Chapter 194: Who is the lucky guy?

Chapter 194: Who is the lucky guy?

Nothing important or special came up during the entire dinner. It was more like a real catching up between friends. Marianne stayed in Fil’s place as long as she could. However, she couldn’t stay over because of her work and Fil’s arrangement the next day.

And just like that, the next day rolled in without conditions.

It was a lie if Fil said she didn’t miss the office and the people she worked with. After all, her reason for working remotely was that she had to get away from certain people. But it was definitely not anyone in the firm. If anything, she sort of missed them, their banter, their brilliance, and their company.

"Ah, goodness." Elise sat blankly in front of her desk. "I thought I was not gonna make it."

"Working up late last night?"

"Yeah," Elise groggily responded to the person talking to her without looking at her. "I have to send this to Fil or else she had to do it herself. She’s already away and is swamped with work, so I can’t..."

Elise trailed off as she slowly turned her head to the person. The second she saw the person sitting right beside her desk, smiling from ear to ear, her pupils went wide.

Fil couldn’t help but laugh at Elise’s reaction.

"I didn’t die, Elise." Fil slowly slid a cup of coffee she got for Elise. "So, I don’t see the reason why you’re looking at me as if you’ve seen a ghost."

"Oh, my god!" Elise gasped and quickly slid her chair close to Fil. She abruptly placed her hands on Fil’s shoulder, making the latter flinch. "Please tell me this is you and that I’m not still sleeping in my bed. I will get in trouble if I miss today’s morning meeting."

Deep lines appeared between Fil’s brows before she laughed out loud.

"Try that coffee first," Fil shook her head. "You’ll know it’s not a dream and you made it in time."

Elise blinked and blinked. Without saying a word, she slid her chair back to her cubicle and sipped her coffee. Elise almost spat out her coffee when she scalded her tongue.

"See?" Fil smiled teasingly. "It’s not a dream."

Elise’s mouth fell open as she slowly looked back at Fil.

"Fil..." the corner of her eyes teared up and before she knew it, she threw herself to Fil. "I missed you so much! Why did you go without even saying goodbye?! Do you know how worried I was?"

"Why are you acting as if I didn’t keep in touch?" Fil patted Elise’s back, smiling. "I kept in touch, didn’t I?"

"But it’s different when you’re here! Also, you’re so busy. Huhu!" Elise literally wept, earning the attention of the people walking by their office and the people who were already in there. "Why did you go without telling us? We could’ve sent you off with a party, then cried together while we told each other that we’ll miss each other!"

"I didn’t want to say goodbye because it’s not goodbye."

"But why did I feel empty?"

"Haha." Fil consoled Elise until the latter calmed down. When Elise did, they parted and looked at each other. "Goodness. Look at you. Now I feel bad."

Fil wiped Elise’s tears with her thumb. "If only I knew you’d cry this much, I would’ve brought you more than just a coffee."

"It’s because it’s not the same here anymore without you." Elise pouted, her tears tempting her to come out again. "It’s so lonely, you know? Ever since I was hired here, you’ve always been here."

"Aww, Elise." Fil smiled subtly.

"Fil!" Elise hugged Fil once more as tightly as she could. "I have so much gossip and I can’t tell anyone. I missed you so much!"

"Haha." Fil patted Elise’s back. "We can talk about them."

"You can talk about them after the meeting."

Suddenly, Fil heard a voice from in front of her cubicle. When she turned her head, her mouth stretched even more.

"Ken," she called in relief. "You’re okay now?"

"What were you expecting? That I’m in a wheelchair?" Kenzo sassed. "It’s been three months. Not even a hi or hello."

"Kenzo, are you going to slander me three seconds after three months of not seeing me? Way to go, rival!" Fil also snapped her tongue but didn’t feel any irritation at the man. If anything, she was glad to see him in good shape. "I missed you too, Kenzo."

"I didn’t say that I missed you."

"But I can see your eyes cursing me for winning once more." She playfully winked, releasing Elise as the latter let her go.

Elise glared daggers at Kenzo. "Kenzo, can’t you see there’s a crying lady here? I know you missed Fil, but can you please wait in line?"

"Nope." Kenzo rested his arms on the cubicle, eyes on Elise. "I’m staying here and waiting for her to cry as well. If she didn’t, that means she didn’t miss you just as much as you did."

"What?" Elise gasped at Fil.

"Don’t listen to him. He’s just jealous because I can travel around the world and I’m still his boss." Fil rolled her eyes, shocking Kenzo with her rebuttal. "Ignore him. My tears are not the basis if I miss someone or not."

Elise pouted and slowly smiled triumphantly at Kenzo. Kenzo, on the other hand, frowned deeply as if he was wondering if approaching them was the right decision.

"Anyway, how long are you going to stay in the office?" asked Kenzo, changing the topic as he wouldn’t win against the two ladies.

"One week."

"What? You’re still leaving?"

Fil pursed her lips and nodded. "I only have to return to report to Olivia and do some work. After all, the construction is starting this week and I want to make sure everything is in place. I don’t want the Solana people setting me on fire."

"They offered you the job. Did they think another job means less work?" Elise muttered. "How dare they put you on fire? Fil, are they even kind to you over there?"

They’d be surprised just how kind Jackson’s people were, especially the man.

"They’re all professional and I simply didn’t want to disappoint." Fil smacked her lips. "Anyway, anyone’s available tonight? Let’s have dinner and some drinks."

"I don’t have a date tonight, so sure." Kenzo shrugged.

"You are dating?" Fil gasped, her eyes lighting up in intrigue. "Who’s the lucky girl?"

"Can’t tell you."’

"He’s not dating anyone, and his love life is as dead as a doornail." Elise shook her head in dismay, facing Fil. "Though I have some arrangements tonight. I forgot what date is today because of work, so I already agreed to go out with someone."

"You have arrangements tonight?" Fil furrowed her brows, intrigued. "You mean you have a date?"

Elise’s cheek blushed. "It’s not a date. We’re friends and we agreed to eat together tonight."

"Oh, ho." Fil laughed deviously.

"Maybe I can ask him to join us. Is that okay with you?"

"Of course!" Fil excitedly agreed, intrigued by what kind of man Elise was seeing. "I need to make sure you’re in good hands. But I’ll be very gentle."

Elise let out a nervous laugh.

"Wow." Kenzo was in awe. "Are all my juniors dating while the seniors are all single?"

Fil chuckled at Kenzo and the three of them continued to chat until it was time to work. The day went by with Fil attending meeting after meeting, briefing everyone on the next phase of the Solana Project, and making sure everyone understood there was a reason she managed to keep her position in the project despite working remotely.

And just like that, came the time for everyone to clock out. As agreed, Fil, Kenzo, Oliver, Elise, and a few of their colleagues planned to dine together. But as they were walking out of the building, Fil slowed down upon catching a familiar figure standing outside the building.

’What is he doing here?’she wondered. ’Marcus... I thought he —’

"Marcus!"

Suddenly, Elise yelled Marcus’ name. Fil and Kenzo intuitively watched Elise sprint toward Marcus.

"Ken." Fil slowed down until she stopped, eyes fixed on Elise and Marcus. "Do you know about this?"

Kenzo also kept his gaze on the two with wide eyes, stopping beside Fil. "I didn’t even know she was seeing someone until today."

’I don’t feel good about this,’Fil told herself, watching Elise urge Marcus to come with her until the two of them were standing in front of their group. Marcus maintained a smile as Elise introduced him, but when he locked eyes with Fil, her breath hitched.

’No, Marcus. Not Elise.’
