Chapter 192: Better off without each other

For the past three months, Fil didn’t indulge in any news of the people she left in the city. She didn’t bother trying to find out about what happened to Valerie or Vincent, the music video of Anton, Marcus, or even the mysteries behind Michael.

The least she did was keep in contact with Marianne as little as possible. Just brief updates of their situations and then they would move on. Marianne was happy with just that. Even Jackson was surprised at how low-maintenance Marianne was. But overall, Marianne didn’t mention anything about them — not even a word. Well, aside from telling Fil she was too busy that she hadn’t been meeting them as well.

Even so, since Fil was back in the city, she wanted to brief herself. She was only here for a week, but she wanted to equip herself with news about those people. Who would know what was coming to her, after all? One week was a long time for those people to make it feel like an eternity.

With that thought in mind, Fil started browsing the internet since she didn’t have to clean the place anymore. She might as well do something more productive. Hence, she started with Anton, the easiest one.

"Wow," she muttered. "Kim told me she saw the music video and said it was a global hit. I thought she was exaggerating."

After all, if the music video was a global sensation, why didn’t Fil feel like a celebrity? No one in their town didn’t even mention it. But then again, their town was still more into watching television and knew mainstream celebrities.

"Hmm." Fil scrolled through the articles until she ended up on the video link. "We look good on the thumbnail."

It had been three months since the music video was released, but until now, Fil hadn’t seen it. This would be the first. A smile slowly appeared on her face as she watched the music video, appreciating the work everyone put in here to create this almost four-minute video.

"Even though I am one of the actors, I’m still surprised at the outcome," she nodded approvingly. "Anton is a good actor too, and a musician."

After watching the clip, Fil scrolled through the comments. Most of them were positive comments. She continued searching for everything about Anton over these past three months. It wasn’t really hard. His career was blossoming like usual.

[Are they really together?]

[The mystery woman in his music video is really pretty. They would make a cute couple!]

[Another music video please?]

Fil couldn’t help but chuckle, feeling a little sorry for these people who were demanding that Fil and Anton work together again. However, she didn’t feel sorry for those wishing for them to date.

"If only they knew Anton is only the martyr in the music video, but he’s far from that in real life." She shook her head. "Well, there’s a reason people have an image to maintain."

To summarize, Anton generated a lot of work and guesting with that music video alone. He was already popular before this, but the song surpassed his previous hit, making it his golden era. Fil didn’t feel any negativity about it. After all, Anton wasn’t a naturally bad person. If anything, he was actually a kind person deep inside.

"If only he finds different friends," she muttered. "He didn’t have to try so hard to be mean."

Fil didn’t feel like reconnecting with the man as she was better off without him. She wished him luck, though.

Moving on, Fil searched for Marianne. Although she often gets a life update from Marianne, she wants to know the things the latter didn’t tell her. There was nothing new. Marianne’s career was also doing well, making it the permanent host of Celebrity Buzz in daily segments of the news broadcasts.

"I guess she did tell me everything," she muttered, raising her brows when an article about Marianne caught her eyes. "What is this?"

Fil clicked the link to the article, skimming through it. The article had Marianne and Vincent’s pictures, and the article was about clarifying their relationship. Apparently, Vincent released a statement a month after she left.

In the article, he clarified that Marianne was only a friend of his and that the picture was taken to make a malicious rumor. Vincent’s legal team even sued the reporter who wrote the article about them and even threatened to take legal action for anyone who would make such malicious accusations.

With this article, rumors about them instantly died down. As far as Fil could remember before she left, there were still people talking about Vincent and Marianne. There were still articles popping up about them. But after the statements were made, nothing new came up.

"He could’ve done that earlier," she muttered, furrowing her brows. "Does that mean Marianne and Vincent... broke up?"

Marianne did tell her she was too busy to hang out with the guys. Fil didn’t expect it to this extent.

"But then again, if she seduced Vincent because of me, she didn’t have a reason to sleep with him since we broke up," she whispered, shrugging. "Not that I care."

Since she was already onto Vincent, Fil read articles about the Hale Construction. Vincent might be a narcissist, but he maintained a private life. Hence, she didn’t bother looking him up. She knew the search engine would only give her a brief biography of him and his achievements.

Looking up the Hale Construction was a better choice.

In the past three months, Hale Construction closed many deals, one of which was a huge private project, and Hale Construction was its main supplier for raw materials. Fil was in awe, but not surprised. Vincent might be a lousy fiance, but he was undeniably good at doing his job.

"I guess he’s alright." She shrugged. "That’s good, then. If he moved on, it’s my win. That means he won’t bother me."

There wasn’t anything special or suspicious about the Hale Construction. So, she went to check on Marcus, even though she wasn’t expecting anything. Just like what she expected, there was also nothing new about the Arkwright Corporation. There wasn’t even news aside from Marcus’s third cousin linking into a scandalous affair. It was the same for Michael. There wasn’t even one article about Michael, which wasn’t new.

"To summarize... the world moves on with or without me." A subtle smile turned up on her face, a little relieved that these people moved on with their lives even after she disappeared. "We are all better off without each other."

Fil leaned back with a smile, hoping these people continue doing whatever the hell they were doing and she would live her life the way she wanted it to.

"I hope they would leave me alone or don’t even hear I came back." Fil exited the browser and went to message Marianne. She promised the woman to meet her and to keep Marianne on the leash. Fil knew she had to do this much.

Little did Fil know, there were many things happened that wouldn’t be seen or read on the internet. What she forgot to remember was that she already made a move and created waves before she chose to run away. So, even without her, the plans she originally put in motion continued to turn, waiting for her return to bite her back.
