Chapter 191: This is the man I’m about to marry
Fil spent the rest of the week without thinking too much about her return to the city. She was only mandated to return to the office for official business, then she could go again. Once this week finished, she and Jackson agreed to plan their wedding despite not having agreed on the wedding date yet. After all, they couldn’t get married without a ring.
Overall, it was not a problem.
Everything for her was going well. The work, the projects under her, her relationship with Jackson, her new circle, and most importantly, her time with her family. Fil managed to balance all of it whilst doing the same amount of work. Surely, not having people run her errands or favors freed up a lot of her time for herself.
"Are you sure you’ll be okay?"
Fil smiled, holding the phone to her ear while in a taxi on her way to her apartment. "I told you I’ll be fine. It’s just for a week."
"You should’ve let me drop you off." Jackson sighed. "Now, I miss you."
"You had to a plane to catch."
"And I told you, I have a private jet."
"I know, Mr. Big Fish, but even so, I’m a big girl," she chuckled, leaning back in the backseat. "I’ll be fine, Jack. You’re only away for a week."
"If those jackasses come to you, do you know what you’ll do?"
"Kick them in the nuts?"
"Good girl."
Fil giggled once more. "I spent every single day these past three months with you. Being separated shouldn’t be a problem."
"Sweetheart, do you know the reason why I hired you as a consultant?"
"For office romance?"
"Fair enough, but the real reason is I want to spend every single breath with you," Jackson’s tone dramatically changed, making her giggle. "And we’re being separated right after our engagement. Oh, dearest life, why does it give me such heartache?"
"Because you’re Mr. Perfect and being perfect comes with a price."
"I think you’re mistaking imperfection for perfection. If I am perfect, I shouldn’t have such a dilemma. Barbie didn’t have such a problem."
"It’s just for a week and you’re not Barbie, not even Ken." Fil smacked her lips. "The three months went by in a blink of an eye. One week will be the same. Don’t worry. Everything’s gonna be fine and if those guys bothered me, I can take care of myself. Isn’t that why you diligently trained me?"
Jackson paused for a second. "I missed you already."
"Haha. Take care."
"Mhm."
"Tell me once you touch down."
"You don’t have to ask," Jackson smirked deviously. "I’ll even update you when I shower. Show you some proofs if you want."
Fil rolled her eyes, only to catch the street of her apartment. "Anyway, I’m here. I’ll settle my things first."
"Are you going to the office today?"
"No. I’m supposed to go tomorrow morning. Though, I’m meeting Anne."
"Oh."
"Jack." Fil smiled subtly. "I can take her. Do you still think I’m as impulsive and emotional as I was three months ago?"
"How would I know? You’ve always been emotional with me," he quipped. "But I know you can take care of all of them. I just do not want them inconveniencing you."
Fil smiled in satisfaction. "I’m here now. Talk to you later, Jack."
"Mhm. Later." Jackson was about to hang up when she called his name. "Yes?"
"I also miss you already."
The corner of his lips curled up in satisfaction as his eyes squinted. "Whoever I’m meeting will be in for a treat. I’m really in a good mood and I might just agree with everything they want."
"Haha. As long as it’s not gonna jeopardize your company. I still need my big fish as a client."
Fil and Jackson humored each other for a while before they reluctantly ended the call. Although they’d been together longer than three months now, they had gotten used to spending their day with each other. After all, Fil still needed to work for the Solana Project and the other sub-projects as their consultant. It was inevitable for her to be with Jackson whenever they had to visit the sites.
So, it wasn’t a stretch for her to miss him already. This was the first time they wouldn’t see each other after three months. And it would last for seven days. If only she could hasten the time. But even so, Fil just got to survive for a week.
It wasn’t like it was permanent.
Standing in front of her apartment, Fil glanced at the withered bouquets at her doorstep. A shallow breath slipped past her lips, shaking her head.
"I’m surprised my landlord hadn’t been berating me to clean my front door," she muttered, picking up the withered flowers to clear her path. "I’ll just throw them later."
Since it had been three months since she was in her apartment, Fil was expecting the mess in her place. After all, when she left the last time, she was in a hurry and wasn’t in the right state of mind. Hence, she left it as a mess. Much to her surprise, the moment she opened the door and saw inside, deep lines appeared between her brows.
Fil pulled her luggage in, looking around her apartment.
"It’s clean," she whispered, arching a brow when she noticed a sticky note on the coffee table. Picking it up, it says;
[I hired a cleaner to maintain our place. So you can just rest and think of me.
Love, Husband. (soon to be)]
A chuckle slipped past her. The handwriting wasn’t Jackson’s for sure, but she could imagine whoever he ordered to write his note didn’t have a good expression when they did.
"This is the man I’m about to marry," she smiled from ear to ear, looking around her place. "Goodness. I should’ve told him I secretly wanted to come home to a messy place, so I could clean and distract myself from missing him."
Fil shook her head, leaving her luggage in the middle of the living area while she threw herself on the couch. Laying on her back, her smile remained as she stared at the ceiling.
"I want to say home sweet home," she whispered, closing her eyes to rest. "But without him, it doesn’t feel like it used to."
