Chapter 182: Mother

Knock Knock

Kim Rock frowned at the sound of a knock on the door. Whoever was outside, couldn’t they see the [DO NOT DISTURB] sign hung outside her room?

"They better have a good reason for disturbing me," she grumbled as she went for the door, opening it without checking who it was. As soon as she laid her eyes on the person outside, her irritation was immediately replaced with surprise.

"Fil?" she called. "You came back?"

Fil pursed her lips and smiled. "I left my luggage, and I didn’t say goodbye properly."

"Oh." Kim let out a shallow chuckle. "That’s okay. You didn’t have to bother."

"And I also want to thank you for looking after me and also, last night," Fil added with a wide smile. "It meant a lot to me. I know you’re busy, but you still came as my plus-one. Thank you."

Kim’s eyes softened, crossing her arms under her chest while leaning her side against the jamb. "You’re welcome," she said, noticing that Fil’s aura was much lighter than when she left. "You seem better now. Is everything okay now?"

"I can’t say everything is okay, but it’s much better than earlier." Fil smacked her lips. "I made you worried earlier, didn’t I?"

"You did." Another short laugh escaped Kim. "But I’m glad you’re feeling much better now."

The two of them stared at each other, smiling. After another several seconds, Fil briefly bid her farewell and turned around. Kim, on the other hand, kept her gaze on her before she reached for the door to close it. But before Kim could, Fil turned around and faced her again.

"When are you free?" asked Fil, making Kim’s brows raise. Seeing the surprise on the latter’s face, she couldn’t help but chuckle. "I mean, I’m free anytime this month. So if you want to grab some coffee or hang out, you can call me. Jack told me you stole my number on his phone. Call me when you’re free."

"You want to hang out?" Kim blurted out in surprise.

Fil smiled brightly and nodded. "You said you want a friend, and being my friend means you can irritate him to no end. I thought about it and I think there might be a day I want to annoy him. I need an ally for that and... I want to get to know you too."

"You want to get to know me?"

"Who doesn’t want to be friends with the nation’s goddess?"

Kim grinned from ear to ear in excitement. "I’ll call you then. Tomorrow? Uh, wait. You have work tomorrow."

"I don’t." Fil couldn’t help but giggle at Kim’s giddy reaction. "Call me just when you’re free."

"Sure!" Kim bit her lips to stop herself from smiling like a fool. "But please, keep your phone to yourself. Don’t let him answer my call."

"Hmm?"

"He’ll sabotage me."

Fil chuckled. "Jackson wouldn’t do that."

"He’ll do anything to monopolize you. Trust me," Kim quipped. "I wouldn’t hate him for no reason."

"I’ll keep that in mind." Fil smacked her lips and took a step back. "See you around."

Just as Fil turned around to leave, she stopped when Kim called once more.

"Fil." Kim waited for Fil to look back at her. "Can I take Dustin with us when we meet?"

"Isn’t he busy?"

"Oh, he’s always available."

"Well, sure." Fil nodded. "As long as it’s not a bother to you or him, I would love to thank him for all the extra dresses he sent over. Jack told me a ’thanks’ is enough instead of a cheque."

Kim’s grin broadened, rocking her head. "I agree with him. See you."

"Mhm. See you."

With that being said, Fil resumed her steps away from Kim’s suite. Kim, on the other hand, kept her gaze on Fil before closing the door slowly. As soon as the door shut, a chuckle escaped her, shaking her head mildly.

"I wonder what did he do to her?" she mumbled, walking away from the door. As she returned to her room, Kim glanced at the little old trinket lying on the bedside table.

Her eyes softened, sitting on the edge of the bed. She reached for the old trinket and gazed at it affectionately.

"I guess I had too little faith in him after his countless failed attempts," she whispered, unable to take away the smile from her face. "Mom... Dustin will be over the moon."

[FLASHBACK]

"Mother? Where are we going?"

Two children walked on either side of the woman they called their mother. They held her hands, gazing up at her as they walked through the forest. When their mother gazed down, her purple eyes shimmered along with her beautiful smile.

"For a walk," said their mother. "Do you not like the song of the wind in the morning?"

"I like Mother more!" said the little girl with a grin. "And I like being with you!"

The woman smiled gently at the little blonde before shifting her eyes to the boy on the other side. Although the boy and the girl looked so much alike, their aura and personality were poles apart. Unlike the bold little girl, the little boy just looked at their mother with a timid smile.

"I — I like Mother too," said the little boy, almost whimpering in embarrassment.

"I know you do," said their mother. "There’s a lake at the end of this pathway. You’ll like it there."

With that being said, the woman squeezed their little hands and ushered them to the lake at the end of the pathway. The children and their mother would constantly take a walk in the morning on this same path every day for the next decade and a half.

Over the years, the children grew taller, older, and more beautiful. From adorable children, they slowly grew into a young lady and a young man. But the woman they called mother looked the same as the day she picked them up from the plague-stricken town where they were supposed to have died.

After many more years, the children fully bloomed, but the woman whom they considered their mother looked the same. No sign of wrinkles, white hairs, or aging. Hence, they started calling her sistersince they all looked the same age. Even so, no matter what they called her, she would always be their mother.
