Chapter 168: Unknowingly saved herself
Pretending to know nothing was as easy as eating a piece of cake. But pretending not to be mortified? It took an entire lifetime of courage for Fil to stay with Marianne. Following the natural and usual course of action, Fil stayed with Marianne.
Fil took care of her, tried to make her feel better, and simply spent time with her.
"Thanks, Fil," Marianne held Fil’s hand as she laid down while the latter sat on the edge of the bed. "I feel much better now that my best friend is here."
Fil sported a short smile. "You should rest more. You rarely get a day off, so it’s best if you use this day to rest."
"Are you leaving?"
"I planned to."
"Are you... going to hang out with Kim Rock?"
"No." She shrugged. "Don’t worry. I called your manager and assistant. They will be here after their errands."
Marianne slightly frowned, keeping her eyes on her. "I see."
"I’ll come back, though," Fil blurted out, pursing her lips and biting her tongue. "I planned to go home early, but I’ll come back and go home later."
"Really?" The corner of Marianne’s lips stretched wide, squeezing Fil’s hand. "You’re the best, Fil."
"I know."
"I mean it," Marianne stressed. "You’re really the only one who cares for me."
She pressed her lips, smiling genuinely at her. "Thank you for taking care of me. I promise you. I’ll take care of you too."
For many reasons, that promise sent a chill down Fil’s spine. However, she forced a smile out of her and nodded.
"You always take care of me, Anne," said Fil. "Just be my friend. That’s good enough for me."
"Me too," Marianne replied. "Having you... is good enough for me."
"Rest." Fil pulled up the blanket over Marianne’s shoulder. "I’ll go now, but I’ll be back to check on you."
"Mhm."
With that being said, Marianne closed her eyes. She wasn’t lying when she said she barely slept. Though that was intentional. Meanwhile, Fil stayed beside her for the next five minutes. When she "thought" Marianne was deep asleep, she slinked out of the bed carefully.

As soon as Fil reached her room, she locked the door before her back fused with it. Her chest moved in and out heavily, her eyes dilated, and her entire body cold.
"Why?" she breathed out. "What... is going on?"
The thought of Marianne smiling triumphantly and evilly while hugging her sent shivers down her spine. Not only that, but Marianne claimed she hadn’t had sleep due to the ’trauma.’ But when Fil was fixing her room, she noticed the empty packs of coffee in the trash bin. To top it all off, what Marianne said made the hair on her nape rise.
[Having you... is good enough for me.]
’Why did she say it like that?’ she wondered, her face looked like she had seen a ghost. ’What does that mean?’
Myriads of questions hovered over Fil’s mind at this horrifying discovery. Michael was right. Fil had no idea of what type of people — monsters — she had been spending time with.
"I feel sick," she whispered as she slowly collapsed until she was sitting on the floor. She placed her hand over her mouth, having this urge to throw up out of stress.
From what it seemed, Marianne had more reasons to sleep with Vincent. All this time, Fil thought it was because Marianne developed feelings with Vincent over the years the three of them were together. But why would Marianne hurt Valerie because of her?
’Wait. Did she really... did all those horrible things... for me?’ — referring to the past incidents that linked Fil.
Her entire body shook once more at the thought.
"Back then, I remember another student... confessing to Vincent," she blurted out listlessly. "That time..."
That time, Fil saw everything. Although Vincent rejected the girl, the girl stole a kiss from Vincent. Vincent didn’t know about this because Fil only told one person: her best friend. She remembered how she cried her heart out while Marianne consoled her.
After a few months, that girl took her own life.
She jumped out of the building; the same building where she confessed to Vincent.
Did Marianne do it?
Her mind went blank as she couldn’t help but remember everything that she thought wasn’t connected to her. All incidents and bad things that had happened to the people around her until she was covering her ears.
"No," she whispered. "No, she didn’t — I didn’t —"
Fil clenched her teeth, a little suffocated at the thought that all those people got hurt because of her. Just like Valerie, Marianne only targeted the people who touched or hurt her. But why would Marianne sleep with Vincent, knowing once Fil found out about it, it would hurt her?
Why?
Why?
What was her purpose?
’That night I found out about them...’Her breath hitched once more. ’... did she plan to make me find out about the affair?’
If Fil found out about it, what would Marianne do? What did she plan to do then? Again, Fil’s heart rate slowed down as she remembered one particular incident in the past. This was when they just graduated and Marianne was just a rookie news researcher.
"She accused one of the producers of r*pe," Fil blurted out under her breath. "No one doubted it because he was caught in the act and she was saved in the nick of time."
What did the producer claim about it back then?
They were lovers.
However, during the investigation, evidence of the man bombarding Marianne’s phone with lustful and intimate messages was retrieved. Hence, the producer was charged. After that, Marianne’s current manager, who was known as someone who protected women in the industry from predators like the producer, approached Marianne.
Since then, Marianne’s career blossomed.
"Don’t tell me, if I agreed to come that night..." Fil covered her mouth with her hand once more. "... she would do the same thing?"
Fil felt like a bucketful of ice was poured on her at the thought. There wasn’t anything she could think of for Marianne to save herself and their friendship. If anything, if that happened, it would only make Fil feel sorry and guilty her entire life.
Did Fil... unknowingly save herself and Vincent from that disaster?
