The Devil's Good Girl -
Chapter 167: Crazy
Chapter 167: Crazy
It had been a while since Fil barely slept for the night. What Michael said and Marianne did kept her awake. It bothered her, especially Marianne.
The question of why would Marianne hurt Valerie kept repeating in her mind. On top of that, why was Michael acting ’out of character?’
What was going on?
Was she that blissfully ignorant of the people she saw a few times a week in the past several years?
Fil knew that she should listen to Michael. After all, Jackson had never stopped reminding her of the consequences and outcome of the revenge. However, the other part of her told her she had to know. Before she put a stop to everything and lived a life just the way she should, she wanted to see the truth.
Could she still leave and save her own skin?
Or was that a foolish dream? Because right now, she already felt trapped.
With that thought in mind, Fil immediately went to Marianne’s room as soon as the morning sun spread in the world. Standing in front of the door, Fil took a deep breath and forced a smile.
She knocked.
"Anne? It’s me," she said. "I know you’re awake."
Fil pressed her lips together, staring at the door, and waited. When a minute had passed and there was no sign of movement inside, she knocked again.
"Anne," she called. "I want to see how you were. I heard what happened last night."
"Anne —"
Fil stopped when the door slowly opened from the inside. Taking a deep breath, a small smile turned up on her face as soon as she saw Marianne.
"Gosh. You look like a mess." A sigh escaped her. "I drank something last night and felt really out of it. Are you okay?"
"Yeah." Marianne’s voice was low and emotionless. "I’m okay."
"Are you sure?"
"Mhm."
Fil frowned, assessing Marianne’s pale face. The latter didn’t carry the usual gracefulness and allure she normally does. She was just pale and her eyes were a little empty.
’Was it because of last night?’ wondered Fil. ’But when she pushed Valerie, she didn’t seem—’
Her thoughts trailed off, telling herself to stop basing everything on what she knew. This time, she wanted to focus on the things she didn’t know.
"Can I come in?" Fil offered with a meek smile. "What happened last night... I’m sorry."
"Why are you sorry?" Marianne blinked ever so slowly. "Did you do something bad?"
"I should be there with you, but I wasn’t. You must’ve been so scared and I feel bad that I wasn’t there for my best friend."
Marianne didn’t say anything for several seconds and just gazed at her. Without a word, she opened the door wider and walked back in. Fil sighed deeply before she stepped in. But the moment she did, she froze as the memory of last night flashed in her mind.
"Are you coming in?"
Fil jolted when Marianne looked back at her.
"Of — of course!" Fil laughed nervously, forcing herself to come inside. She didn’t fully close the door, just enough for anyone to kick it open without a problem if things go wrong.
"I didn’t have a good sleep last night," said Marianne as she sat down on the edge of the bed. "I can’t just forget all this blood and I... I’m just scared."
Fil stood several steps from the bed, observing Marianne. The latter truly seemed in distress, her hand trembling as she stroked her messy hair. It almost made Fil question her eyes last night. But then again, she couldn’t question the fact Michael dragged her away from the scene.
Marianne looked up wearily. "Why are you standing there, Fil?"
"Uh, nothing." Fil cleared her throat, forcing herself to sit beside her on the bed.
Facing Marianne squarely, Fil deluded herself that she wasn’t alarmed. Subconsciously, she knew she had to act normal. Otherwise, Marianne might do what she did to Valerie.
"It’s not your fault, Anne." Fil nodded reassuringly, holding Marianne’s hand. "Matter of fact, you saved Valerie. She’s too young to be drinking, but she was probably really upset last night."
"Even so, before the party, I actually started to dislike her," Marianne confessed, full of guilt. "Whenever I think of her hurting you, it makes me angry. So, when I saw her in the pool, I felt guilty."
’Did she... try to murder Valerie because... Valerie slapped me?’ Fil momentarily froze as another wave of dread crept up her spine. ’Looking back, she was really emotional when I told her about what Valerie did to me.’
Fil’s heart shook as the hair behind her nape raised. ’No way.’
But then it hit her.
There were a few incidents in the past, especially during their university days, which were like this one. One incident was when a group of students got arrested and kicked out by the university after getting involved in illegal activities. Those students used to pick on Fil. And then a malicious photo of one of Fil’s professors, who was harassing her spread in the university. The professor was fired and his license was revoked.
There were more incidents, and Fil never connected them until now.
’Don’t tell me...?’
"Fil?" Marianne called as Fil just stared blankly at her. "Fil?"
Fil blinked and automatically forced a smile. Without saying a word, she pulled Marianne into her embrace. Her body trembled as her complexion turned pale.
"I’m sorry I wasn’t there for you," Fil blurted out, lips quivering. "I should’ve been there for you. I’m really sorry."
Marianne furrowed her brows, placing her hand on Fil’s trembling back. She pressed her lips together before its corners curled up briefly.
"It’s okay." Marianne patted her back mildly. "I understand you were busy yesterday."
"Next time..." Fil drew a deep breath, telling Mariane what she thought the latter wanted to hear. "Next time, I won’t let you all alone."
"I know." Marianne leaned her head against Fil, her body relaxing, smiling. "I know you won’t leave me alone next time."
Fil held her breath, staring wide-eyed at the vanity mirror placed straight at her. That mirror also reflected Marianne’s smirk and how she had her eyes slid on the corner to where Fil was through the window.
’She... she’s crazy.’
