Chapter 161: What was new?

Chapter 161: What was new?

Mr. Windsor’s identity and Fil’s gift were already a surprise that took everyone off guard. But Kim Rock? It took everyone by storm.

One might think Kim Rock was nothing but a famous actress recognized all over the world. However, that was a simple way to describe her. Although it was true this woman was a renowned actress in her craft, inviting her to such an event was almost as impossible as the crows turning white.

"I wore one of Mr. Windsor’s pieces during an event last year," Kim Rock sauntered toward the chairman’s table, unfazed by the attention on her. It was as though for some reason, everything around her looked darker while a spotlight was on her.

When she stopped, she offered the chairman a smile and Mr. Windsor. "Happy birthday, Chairman Hale. And I didn’t expect to see you here, Mr. Windsor, but I’m glad to see you."

"Me, not so much." Mr. Windsor shivered at the sinful beauty before him. "But I’m hungry."

"Miss Rock, is it?" Madam Sinclair arched a brow, assessing the beautiful lady with interest. "Chairman, I didn’t know you invited such a person to this year’s party. Or was it the Chief Director Hale?"

"Vincent Hale managed to invite her?" the crowd looked at each other in surprise, while Vincent furrowed his brows.

As far as Vincent could remember, Kim Rock wasn’t on the list of guests. He didn’t even think of this woman to invite. Aside from making it impossible, even though Valerie practically worshipped this woman, he knew they couldn’t afford to pay her rates. Not that they would declare bankruptcy to buy Kim Rock’s one night, but it would hurt their pockets.

Before anyone could admire Vincent’s skill set and ability to bring such a person to this party, Kim chuckled.

"Oh, no. I wasn’t invited here," Kim clarified, sauntering to Fil. She then hooked her arm around Fil’s, smiling sweetly to everyone who was watching. "I’m Fil’s plus one. I’m like a sister to her and it’s so hard to spend some time with her. So, when I heard she was attending the party, I offered to be her plus one."

Again, silence followed.

Everyone’s eyes went wide, staring at Kim clinging to Fil as if they were best of friends. Some couldn’t even stop their jaws from falling.

First, Mr. Windsor, and now, Kim Rock?

Just who was this Filomena?

Everyone looked at Fil with equal shock and interest. Everyone here were elites, and a few were elites among elites like Marcus. Yet, inviting either of those two was akin to reaching the moon. But Fil managed to make those two attend the same party.

"Now that I think about it, her dress is one of the limited pieces from the MG Brand," a woman in the crowd murmured. "Oh, my god. I thought it just looked like it, but I think I’m wrong. No wonder I kept thinking about it."

"Heh." The CEO, who had been pleased by everything he had witnessed so far, called his assistant’s attention. "Did you say she’s the head engineer on the Solana Project? Set me up for a meeting with her company first thing in the morning tomorrow."

As soon as those around him heard him, they also secretly took out their phones. Whatever they were doing with their phones, it didn’t matter. After all, at this point, it was a race on who gets to sit at Fil’s table.

"Wow." Michael, who was at the other table, whispered. "I knew she would pull it off. I never doubted her."

Marcus glanced at the hypocrite and laughed. "Still think she’s going to be in your bed later?"

"Tonight? Nope." Michael wiggled his brows at his friend. "But I’m okay with that. After all, she won’t be in your room either."

"I don’t mind." Marcus shrugged, shifting his eyes to Fil, and smiled proudly. "Vincent won’t be either."

"Right. That probably suck worse." Michael clicked his tongue continuously. "Talk about throwing a diamond for a piece of pebble. Imagine winning the lottery and then losing the lottery ticket because you chose to keep a grocery receipt?"

Marcus chuckled. "Don’t drink too much. You’d be babysitting a friend later."

"You’re the best friend." Michael scoffed. "Take care of him later. I don’t want to spend my night listening to his whining."

As everyone slowly shifted their focus to either cooking up ways to establish a connection with Fil, gossip about Valerie and Rosalind, or admire Kim’s beauty, the chairman’s area was also being cleaned up. Since Mr. Windsor and Kim joined them, the staff efficiently cleaned up the table and prepared another one to extend it.

Mr. Windsor happily gobbled up the food without regard for table manners. But no one criticized him. If anything, his actions were very well accepted and didn’t bother a soul. Surely, reputations and names highly contribute to how people treat and accept a person.

"Goodness, chairman!" one of the chairman’s associates exclaimed enthusiastically. "No wonder you are so fond of Miss Lovin! I heard that Mr. Windsor always ditches his shows, but people still pay for it in hopes they’d see him. But tonight, we witnessed a glimpse of his wisdom and talent! Surely, I’m still young enough and haven’t seen it all!"

"Chairman Hale, this is not right. Keeping her a secret from us all this time... I am disheartened."

"Mr. Windsor, I —"

Mr. Windsor glared daggers at the person who tried to strike up a conversation with him, shielding the gift protectively. The latter laughed awkwardly, watching the man chew while protecting the gift as if a mother hen protecting its eggs.

"Ha ha. Please eat some more, Mr. Windsor," said the man awkwardly. "Do you want to take mine?"

Mr. Windsor squinted his eyes and wordlessly snatched the man’s plate. He ate to his heart’s content, proving he was truly starving. Even so, he kept his hand on the gift box as if someone would blatantly steal it.

Meanwhile, Fil ignored the direct and indirect praises on the table as she moved closer to Kim.

"Kim, did he..." Fil lowered her voice even more. "... send you here?"

Kim smiled. "I was worried. That piece of crap doesn’t have anything to do with this."

But her denial only meant Jackson had everything to do with it. Kim wouldn’t just admit it because she loathed the man with passion.

"Loosen up, dearest," Kim winked at her. "No one will hurt you under my watch."

"Miss Kim Rock, we were just discussing..."

Just like that, Kim engaged in the conversation at the table like a natural. Fil, on the other hand, smiled appreciatively while looking at her.

’They saved me... again,’ Fil heaved a sigh of relief, glancing at the chairman, only to see him even more energetic while bragging about her and discrediting himself from anything. ’I don’t know how to thank Jack, but I do want to go home and hug him.’

Fil drew a deep breath, smiling at everyone as she joined the conversation. As the event continued as planned, Valerie seethed in anger.

"How come she knew Kim Rock...?" Valerie ground her teeth. "This is not —"

"Valerie."

Valerie turned her head to Vincent. The latter now stood beside her, taking advantage of the fact everyone was too busy with something else.

"Mom," Vincent also cast his mother a cold look. "It’s already past her bedtime. You should tuck her in."

"Vince, my son —"

"Please." Vincent clenched his teeth. "I’ve barely kept my face thanks to Fil not being petty. Get out of my face and I expect you to apologize to Fil first thing in the morning tomorrow. If you don’t, forget having a son."

"I hate you," Valerie hissed before walking out on him, following her was Rosalind.

Vincent stared at them and sighed. He sat down once again, casting Fil a look. Once the party resumed, Fil didn’t look at him, not even once. He slowly balled his hands into a tight fist, watching how the chairman’s table was so happy while the chairman was bragging about Fil.

What was new?

It wasn’t like this was the first time he felt left out. No matter what he did or what he would do, his efforts wouldn’t be enough for his grandfather. As long as Fil was around, and whether she would give him a cheap gift, she would always be the priority.
