Chapter 133: Gained an ally
Chapter 133: Gained an ally
"Back!" Fil returned to the living area with a big smile on her face and a tray in her hands. "Kenzo, there’s already food in the kitchen. All you have to do is eat it. Goodness. You’ll drive your brother insane at this point."
Fil happily put down the tray, looking at Kenzo and then at Marcus. "You guys didn’t fight, did you?"
"No. Kenzo was just telling me what happened during his date with my sister," Marcus joked, casting Kenzo a playful look. "And I’m just about to tell him how sorry I was he had to put up with her for an entire dinner."
"Oh." Fil nodded as she slowly sat down beside Kenzo. "Right. That almost slipped my mind. Kenzo and your sister went on a blind date!"
"It’s no big deal. It happens." Marcus shrugged, watching her transfer the plates on the table from the tray. "You’re going to feed him?"
"No, she will not." Kenzo cleared his throat and rolled his eyes. "Before you get jealous, what she’s doing is preparing everything, so all I have to do is feed myself."
"He’s a headache." Fil playfully remarked. "I also sometimes wonder why we’re friends."
"After drinking my meds, are you going to leave me alone?" Kenzo rested his arm on his leg as he reached out for the plate. Leaning back, he cast her a look. "I still think you two are dating, which is still strange. Makes me realize how small this world is."
"If you have the time to be concerned about my dating life, why not use it to take care of yourself?" Fil sighed, resting her back on the couch. "Your brother will replace me soon. So even if we leave, someone else will monitor you."
"I’m not a kid."
"I know, so you should stop acting one."
Kenzo opened his mouth to argue, but he ended up shaking his head instead. He rolled his eyes, holding the plate with his hand, and then used his other hand to use the spoon. As he started eating, Fil snapped her eyes in Marcus’s direction. The moment she did, Marcus flashed her a kind smile.
’He isn’t really jealous,’she thought. ’Because he thinks my friendship with Kenzo will come in handy someday. What a great thinking.’
"Oh." Marcus suddenly felt his pocket, fishing his phone out to check the caller. Upon seeing who it was, he looked at Fil immediately. "I need to take this call for a moment."
"Sure." Fil nodded. "Don’t worry. We’re not going anywhere."
"I know you won’t."
With that being said, Marcus left the two of them. He went straight to the main entrance, showing the importance of the call. When the door closed, Kenzo immediately turned his head on her.
"What do you think?" he remarked in a dead tone, looking at her dead in the eye. "I know you were listening earlier. Didn’t you have goosebumps hearing what he just said?"
"The mere fact that he can smile at your face while knowing he’s the one who caused your injuries is enough to give me goosebumps."
"Then, why?" Kenzo whispered yelled in exasperation. "Fil, this guy... is dangerous."
"And I told you, I know."
"You are..." he trailed off, pinching the bridge of his nose. "Please tell me you’re not doing this because of me?"
"No."
"Fil."
"It’s not because of you," she repeated adamantly. "Ken, I’m not doing this because I don’t think it’s dangerous. I know it’s risky, but I’m doing it, anyway."
"Why?" he gasped. "What would you get for doing this? Your stupid ex cheated on you with your best friend, but is it worth it to do all of this? Revenge... never ends well for both parties."
Fil went quiet, eyes on him. "I know."
"Then just let it go."
"Let it go? And forgive them?" she returned with a scoff. "I spent my youth trying to be someone I am not to the point I don’t even know myself anymore. I put up with everything just to fit in their circle. Kenzo, more than half of my life... focused on trying to please Vincent, his family, and his friends. And they took advantage of every crumb they could get from me."
"And what did I get for doing that — for doing the good?" she continued. "What did I get for being tolerant, kind, considerate, and helpful? There’s nothing that I got, but there are a lot of things I lost. I lost time with my family, my body is almost on the verge of decline, and my heart is torn countless times."
"They could never give that time back to me," she added. "This, for you, is a petty revenge, but for me, it’s a way of standing up for myself and for the people I care about. I’m done being that Fil who will just cry quietly in the corner while my abusers live their lives without a trace of guilt. I will not stay quiet, thinking keeping my mouth shut will only keep the peace — just like what you chose to do."
"Eye for an eye, tooth for tooth. I can’t be the only one in pain, Ken. I can’t be the only one losing it." Fil paused as she drew a deep breath. "I’ve wasted plenty of years with them. So, what’s another year? I’m not walking out of their lives, just so they could move forward and find another Fil or Kenzo they could take advantage of and suppress."
Kenzo opened and closed his mouth, but his voice didn’t come out of his throat. All he could do was stare at the determination and anger swirling in her eyes. After a moment, he ran his fingers through his hair and sighed heavily.
"Why did I become your friend?" he grumbled before he peeked up at her. "Fine. I’m a coward and I’d rather stay quiet because I think keeping my mouth shut will de-escalate the problem."
Another heavy exhale escaped his nostrils. "I’ll drink my meds and eat on time. You don’t have to worry about me."
"I don’t believe you."
"My friend is going crazy. I’ve only been in the hospital for weeks, but I can barely recognize her anymore," he stressed. "Since I know nothing can change your mind now, the least I can do is get well in case you accidentally stab yourself with that double-edged sword you are holding. I can’t help if I still need crutches to walk."
Kenzo pressed his lips and looked at her helplessly. "I don’t approve of it nor do I condone it. But I understand you. Just promise me you’ll be careful, and that you’d let me watch your back."
A moment of silence befell the two of them as a soft smile slowly appeared on her face. Kenzo, on the other hand, shook his head before shoving a spoonful into his mouth.
"Really," he complained while stuffing more food into his mouth. "I’m serious when I say I sometimes question our friendship. Go and have a date with him. Be careful, though. The world is small and you might bump into someone you know."
"Thank God you’re an enabler," she chuckled while he rolled his head.
In the end, Kenzo and Fil somehow worked things out. Although he told her he didn’t want to get too involved, he promised to keep an eye on her. It felt reassuring. Either way, gaining an ally was much better than none.
