The Devil's Good Girl
Chapter 129: Your cooking might make me change my mind.

Chapter 129: Your cooking might make me change my mind.

Fil stared at herself in front of the vanity mirror, nodding encouragingly. Instead of beating herself to what she called a mistake, she picked up her phone and called Kenzo.

The call immediately connected after three rings.

"Hello?" Kenzo’s voice was a little coarse as if he just woke up. "Fil, it’s too early. Don’t tell me you’re here already?"

"I’m coming with a friend." Fil didn’t beat around the bush anymore. "Is that alright with you?"

"Elise?" his brows knitted even more when she answered, ’no.’ Hence, he guessed again. "Oliver?"

"No."

Kenzo slowly opened his squinting eyes as he made another guess. "Don’t tell me it’s Liv?"

"Marcus."

Silence instantly dominated the line after Fil’s answer. She pressed her lips into a thin line, imagining what sort of scolding she would get from him. To her surprise, Kenzo only had one question.

"Are you and Marcus... dating?"

The tone of disbelief in his voice was clear. It did not surprise her because if she was in his shoes, she would also find that strange.

"He asked me out yesterday," she confessed. "I’m single."

"You and Vincent broke up, but that doesn’t mean their friendship also broke."

"Kenzo."

"Filomena Lovin, what are you doing?" Kenzo stressed. "First, you told me — don’t tell me because Vincent is cheating on you with your best friend, you’re going to do the same?"

"Is that bad?" Fil bit her inner bottom lips. "Kenzo, I... I should apologize, but I’m not gonna apologize for agreeing to go out with Marcus. Though I feel bad that I jokingly invite him to come with me to see you."

"Fil, you are the only one who knows who did this to me."

"I know. That’s why I’m telling you this."

"Goodness, Fil." Kenzo ruffled his hair in distress but then realized why Marcus went to see him last night.

’Is this it?’he wondered, arching a brow as he glanced at his phone. ’He doesn’t want Fil to know, but she already...’

"I’ll just tell him you have other plans," Fil sighed. "He won’t mind as long as I go out with him."

"Are you trying to make me feel bad?"

"No?"

"Fil." Kenzo huffed, now completely sober and ready for the day. "Let me ask you one question."

Fil didn’t answer but her brows rose, waiting for his question.

"Marcus might be playing you," he said. "Are you aware of that?"

"I know."

Another momentary silence followed suit.

"Fine," Kenzo gave in. "Take him with you."

"You’re okay with that?"

"Yes, in one condition."

"A condition?"

"You have to give me reassurance you’re not being stupid."

Fil couldn’t answer him fast, knowing what Kenzo truly meant by that. He wanted to know what she was thinking or her plans. She didn’t want to reveal that, knowing she didn’t want Kenzo to get more involved than he already did.

Kenzo ended up in that state because he was worried about her and Elise. Yet, he still came to Marcus’s party, despite knowing they shouldn’t cross paths at that time.

"Marcus likes me, Ken," she muttered, already imagining the judgemental look coming from him. "And I don’t."

"I hope you keep it that way because you might get hurt," he warned. "You don’t know Marcus, Fil. If you think he’s just a jerk, you’re wrong. Don’t forget, he’s the golden boy of the Arkwright Family. That family is worth billions, Fil. Don’t mess with him."

"I’m not messing around."

"Goodness. You’re giving me a headache!" Kenzo pinched the bridge of his nose. "If you’re coming, fine. I’ll be at home and my brother is not here."

"Are you sure you’re okay to see him?"

’I already met him last night,’ was what he wanted to tell her, but held back. "Yes. It sounds like if I don’t, you’d have to go on a date with him. You don’t sound very happy about that, and I don’t trust him."

Fil pursed her lips and smiled subtly. "Ken," she called, only to hear a disinterested grunt from him. "Thanks."

"If you’re really grateful, then stop being so careless." He clicked his tongue. "Anyway, if you’re coming, buy me some bobba on the way. I need to forget a world full of resentment for a moment."

"Sure." Fil chuckled. "The same one?"

"Yep."

"Alright. Is there anything else you want?"

"That’s all."

"Alrighty!" Her lips stretched wider. "See you later."

"Mhm."

With that being said, Fil ended the call and smiled wider. She shook her head mildly, looking at her reflection again.

"One day," she whispered. "One day, I’ll tell him."

She was about to get herself ready when her phone pinged. Glancing at it, she saw Marcus’s name on the screen. When she checked, it was just a simple good morning message.

"Is he actually a clingy person?" she wondered to herself, typing her reply to let him know what time they’d go.

But right after she sent it, an incoming call appeared on the screen. Fil puffed her cheeks and took a deep breath, looking at herself in the mirror again. She nodded and smiled, letting out another persona of herself to take charge for the day.

"Morning," she greeted as soon as she picked up the call, putting him on speaker mode to apply her morning skincare. "Just woke up?"

"Nope."

She paused and glanced down. "Make sense."

"No matter how late I sleep, I wake up around the same time. How about you? Did you get plenty of sleep?"

"Mhm. I had a weird dream, though."

"A dream?"

"I already forgot about it, but I know it was weird," she remarked as she smacked her lips. "By the way, do you... want to eat before we meet Kenzo?"

"Sure."

"I’m not saying out," she clarified. "I’m saving money, so... I’m going to cook lunch. You don’t have to say yes, you know? I’m only asking because I think it was polite to do so."

"In your place?"

"No, in your car," she answered sarcastically. "Of course, in my place."

Marcus laughed soothingly. "Sure. I’ll be there before lunch."

"You don’t have to force yourself —"

"I’ve never been inside your place, nor have I ever eaten anything you prepared," he said, picking up a hobby of cutting her off mid-sentence. "We’re technically dating. Who knows? Your cooking might make me change my mind."

"Fine," she laughed. "Come here early."

"See you."

"Mhm. See you." Fil smiled as she hung up the call. Her smile, however, didn’t last long as soon as she placed her phone down. "I would’ve put laxatives in his food if only I didn’t want him to like me."

Reeling in Marcus was the easiest part. However, keeping him hooked would take a lot more work than she expected. After all, Marcus, surprisingly, seemed more interested in more personal stuff about her than just her body.

"Interesting," she nodded. "So, now, my theory is correct. He has a lot more tolerance than I thought. No wonder he agreed to come see Kenzo. I should be careful with my invitation next time."

Fil shrugged as she happily resumed her routine. However, just as she was about to finish, she froze in horror.

"Jackson... wouldn’t mind, right?" she asked herself. "Inviting another man... oh uh."
