Chapter 121: Understanding the dilemma

There was only one reason Fil agreed to film the music video: that was to incite jealousy or any unpleasant feeling in those with whom she wanted to watch it. It was more like a mind game. The storyline was a bonus. The twist of the story was that they weren’t actually lovers. But rather, best friends.

The song and the music video were all about a man in love with his friend. All the scenes where they appeared as typical lovers were just them being friends. Fil’s role was committed to someone else, and her actual lover was cheating on her. But alas, even though she knew about it, she never told anyone about it.

Hence, the dilemma in their friendship.

Anton’s character wanted her but didn’t have the guts to say it to her face. All he could hope was for Fil and her lover to break up. Meanwhile, Fil’s character stays in the relationship out of love. Even though this love was taking pieces of her heart.

Fil knew once this music video was out, it would touch Marcus and Vincent one way or another. That was the plan. Who would have thought she didn’t need to finish the filming because the results came too soon?

"Will you go out with me?"

Fil opened and closed her mouth, rendered speechless by Marcus’s courage. It wasn’t like this wasn’t in her plans, but it came too soon she didn’t see it coming. Marcus, on the other hand, smiled in relief while assessing the look of surprise plastered on her face.

"I know you didn’t expect that," he uttered under his breath. "But I’ve been thinking about it and, to be honest, I feel like I would go crazy if I keep avoiding it."

"Marcus," Fil whispered, forcing her voice out. "Vincent... is your friend."

"He is." He nodded. "Not just a friend, but my best friend."

"Then, why —"

"Because I like you."

Fil blinked and blinked, almost horrified at his straightforwardness. Was this a dream? Was she daydreaming right now? If so, then this dream was strange. Just in case she was right, Fil pinched her cheek as hard as she could until she wince.

"Haha." Marcus laughed, reaching for her hand to stop her from pinching her cheek. "You’re hurting yourself."

Slowly, she gazed up at him, letting him hold her hand and put it away from her cheek. "It’s not a dream?"

"If you say it like that, I’ll feel flattered," he humored, smiling charmingly. "I might misunderstand and think you like me too."

"I’m just —"

"You’re surprised," he guessed, nodding. "I know. That’s why I said I might misunderstand."

Again, Fil was rendered speechless. But she guessed this reaction was ’normal’ in this situation.

"We’ve known each other for a long time, but I also never thought I’d see you more than just a friend," he confessed quietly, leaning forward with his arms on his legs. "To be honest, I don’t know why or how. No matter how many times I asked myself, I don’t have the answer. Maybe, without realizing it, I’ve grown fond of you all those years and that night simply unlocked something within me. Or maybe that night was the start and changed something. I don’t know."

He turned his head to her, smiling. "But I kept thinking about you since then. I told myself it might just be a fleeting moment and it’ll pass. That if I avoid you, we can go back to being just friends. But it feels like I’m simply throwing a boomerang. The more I push the idea away, the stronger it comes back."

"I couldn’t sleep last night, thinking whether you’re crying or what ice cream flavor you’re eating to cope," he continued, not knowing the ice cream she had last night was definitely what he would expect. "I was worried and, at the same time, angry that no one was there to protect you. I wanted to protect you."

"Marcus," Fil sighed, holding his gaze sternly. "This is not —"

"It may not be love, yes." Again, he cut her mid-sentence as he had thought about her responses beforehand. "That’s what I also want to believe. I’m probably like this because I want to protect you. After all, I have a soft spot for people in pain. But then again, even if someone trips and scrapes their knees, I don’t have the urge to rush to them and tend to their wounds."

"And I never felt the same anger when I heard what Valerie did to you," he added, smacking his lips. "There were still so many uncertainties that I hadn’t and couldn’t figure out. That’s why I’m asking you out. Maybe, if we go out, I’ll understand myself and my feelings more."

"You want to go out with me to find the answer?" she clarified, only to see him shrug. "In other words, you want to use me?"

"If you say it like that, I’m a jerk." He sighed. "I don’t know how to sugarcoat that, but I also don’t want to lie."

Fil didn’t answer, keeping her gaze at him. ’That’s a surprise, but then again, it’s expected of him. After all, he wasn’t as foolish as he seemed to be. Still, if he approaches this matter with caution, it only means he knew it could mean the world to him.’

"Have you ever been in love with someone?" she asked after a moment of silence.

"No." His answer was quick as if he never had to think about it. "That’s why this scares me, because I’ve never been in love. As embarrassing and arrogant as it sounds, I have no idea what a true relationship was. I’m saying this as a warning."

That was true, and Fil was aware of that.

Marcus didn’t need to fall for someone to get her to date him. He was someone who pursued women just because he found them attractive, and then broke up with them once he got fed up with them. She knew that much about him.

"Is there another way?" she asked, and he shrugged again. Fil leaned back on the couch, sighing heavily.

"Don’t answer now," He said. "Please think about it —"

"That’s not what I’m thinking," this time, she cut him off mid-sentence, eyes set ahead. "I’m just... surprised, that’s all. But I understand the dilemma."
