Chapter 104: She crossed the line, deal with her.
"It’s a shame I wouldn’t witness that firsthand."
Just then, a knock on the door stole Fil’s attention. She snapped her eyes to the door, only to see Elise peeking her head in.
"Fil!" Elise exclaimed, making Fil knit her brows at the panic dominating Elise’s face. "Mr. Sisson is here to check the progress. He’s looking for you. Are you okay now?"
’Jack is here?’Fil was confused, only to remember Jack scheduled another meeting today. ’Right. He told me this morning that he’d see me at work.’
"Oh, my god." Fil gasped in horror, checking her face in the mirror. Seeing that the swelling on her cheek barely eased, Fil looked at Elise helplessly. "Can you tell him I’m sick?"
"Liv already told him you met a little accident and can’t attend the meeting, but he insisted." Elise returned helplessly. "He said you didn’t break a leg or your skull, so you should be fine."
"..." Fil was rendered speechless, not surprised Jackson would be able to put pressure even on Olivia. "This sounds like an abuse of power. Tyranny. Does he not know people get sick?"
"Fil, I don’t think it’s the right time to..."
"Fine, I’ll go." Fil sighed, but before she got off the bed, she asked, "I’m not in trouble, am I?"
"And why would you get in trouble, Miss Lovin?"
Elise’s breath hitched as she froze when she heard a deep and husky baritone behind her. Fil, on the other hand, automatically laid down and covered herself with the sheet, pretending to be ill. Fil closed her eyes, her back facing the entrance to avoid the omen.
"It seemed she isn’t the only one sick," Jack stood behind Elise, glancing at the woman playing dead in the clinic. "It seems you were talking to yourself."
’Fil!’Elise screamed internally. ’Why are you playing dead!? Now we might be both dead!’
Elise let out a nervous laugh, looking back, and then gazing up at Jackson. "Mr. Sisson, you’re here?" she almost stuttered. "What are you doing here?"
"Not just me, but Miss Kindell and the entire team are here as well." Jackson cocked his head to the side, making Elise look at their side. Much to her surprise, everyone was looking at her with the same puzzlement. "Since Miss Lovin isn’t well and Miss Kindell thinks it will only stain her, we compromised."
Olivia let out a deep exhale, obviously not pleased by Jackson’s nonsense. But then again, he argued that this meeting would be useless if the lead engineer wasn’t present. Knowing Jackson was a meticulous person, he wanted to make sure the project would proceed as scheduled. After all, the word that one of the engineers in the project — Kenzo — had to take a break from the project reached him. Thus, he was a little concerned.
Jackson justified his concern, and it was Olivia’s duty as the head of the department to reassure him. Fil’s duty, on the other hand, was to back up Olivia.
Meanwhile, Fil snapped her eyes open upon hearing Jackson’s remarks. She looked back, catching Elise and Jackson talking.
’Oh, my god!’ she panicked, closing her eyes again, only to open them again. ’The whole team is here — who does their meeting in the clinic? Ah, goodness.’
In the end, Fil sat upright like a spring. She cleared her throat, keeping her head tilted a little to hide her cheek. It was more embarrassing to play dead when the entire team was here.
"Oh!" Jackson arched a brow, sliding his eyes to the corner. "I guess she’s up now."
Elise instinctively looked at the open door, sighing. She faked a smile, offering it to Jackson and then her colleagues.
"Fil is alright, I guess?" she remarked awkwardly. "How about we go—"
"Miss Lovin, I heard what happened! Are you alright or should I look for another firm to do the job?"
Before Elise could suggest returning to the office with Fil, Jackson had already gone inside the clinic. Elise blinked a few times, flabbergasted, eyes on her colleagues.
"I guess we’re having our client meeting here?" she laughed awkwardly. "Why need an office when we have a clinic, yeah?"
The rest of the team looked at each other and sighed. It wasn’t like they blamed Fil, as they heard she was hurt. However, they couldn’t blame Jackson as well, if his argument made sense. All they could do was to proceed with the meeting in a different location.
With that thought in mind, they dragged their feet toward the clinic. Much to their surprise, the moment they entered the clinic, they stopped. There, Jackson had his hands on the end of the mattress, bending over, studying Fil’s face while the latter was looking away.
Everyone cocked their heads to the side. "Uhh..???"
"I’m fine," Fil reassured awkwardly, keeping her face away from Jackson’s gaze. "Don’t worry, Mister Sisson. The groundbreaking ceremony will take place as scheduled. Moreover, we’ve already sent you the drafts we had and some revisions. We have more in place after studying the area thoroughly."
"Miss Lovin, is that how you talk to someone?" Jackson tilted his head a little. "I heard you met a little accident. Your legs seem fine. Where are the injuries?"
"Mister Sisson." Olivia stepped in, finding his action unprofessional. "We already compromised even though Miss Lovin is obviously —"
"Filomena Lovin," Jackson called this time. His voice dropped and the air suddenly felt chilly. "I want to see it."
Fil winced before she reluctantly faced Jackson. The second their eyes met, Fil gulped, watching his eyes fall to the side of her lips. She didn’t know if it was her imagination, but she could’ve sworn she felt bloodlust in his eyes for a split second.
"Would you mind if I make a quick phone call while we settle in?" Jackson turned his head in Olivia’s direction.
"Of course not." Olivia nodded, motioning her hand to the team to find their place in the clinic. As they dispersed, Jackson casually sat on the bed next to Fil. He held his phone in his ear, looking up at the ceiling, ignoring the pairs of observant eyes on him.
"It’s me," Jackson remarked while everyone slowly sat down, unsure if they should be hearing this phone call. "You mentioned that kid when I introduced you to my prospective bride."
Fil furrowed her brows, looking at him curiously. ’Prospective bride?’ Not just her, but everyone stayed quiet, not wanting to listen to him, but they ended up listening to his every word, anyway.
"Yes. That kid." Jackson nodded. "Kill her."
’Yep. This is a phone call we shouldn’t be hearing,’ was the first thing that came into everyone’s mind upon hearing Jackson’s remarks.
"Haha." Jackson chuckled, seeing the horror plastered on everyone’s faces.
"I’m kidding. I don’t kill people," he joked, looking at Fil’s colleagues before refocusing on the phone call. "She crossed the line. Deal with her."
’Was that the same order, just reworded?’Everyone exchanged looks, telling themselves to give Jackson the benefit of the doubt. He wasn’t like those rich people in the dramas who killed anyone who got in their way, right?
Fil, on the other hand, kept her lips in a thin line while observing Jackson. ’I’ve never seen him angry,’she thought, remembering that time when he told her she would know if he was angry.
This was what he meant.
He was angry, yet he was repressing himself. She could only imagine what it would be like if he didn’t have to hold himself back.
’I guess I really overdid it,’she told herself. ’All he asked of me when he offered help in this revenge is for me not to purposely hurt myself. He thinks it’s the path for self-destruction.’
Another sigh escaped Fil. ’I think he’s right. This path... will lead to self-destruction.’
Now, thanks to Jackson, Valerie’s punishment didn’t feel as satisfactory anymore.
