The Devil's Good Girl -
Chapter 100: It’s a secret
Chapter 100: It’s a secret
Days had passed in a blur, Fil used this time to focus on not just her career, but her health as well. One of the training Jackson had given her was to strengthen her stamina. Thus, she started hitting the gym after he left the country for a business trip. When Jackson returned, they would work out together. Not only that, but he had been coaching her in self-defense. The sex afterward was the bonus they threw in for free.
And during all those days, Vincent fulfilled his promise.
Every morning, Fil would find a bouquet on her doorstep. During lunch, another bouquet and food would be delivered to her desk. He would also send another one at night, but every night, he would only send desserts and a small letter card which he obviously didn’t write. She thought he would stop after the second day, but she was wrong.
This went on for the entire week, making others wonder who her admirer was. She never told anyone except Elise.
"Another one?" Elise murmured, watching Fil sign the delivery form on her desk. "What lunch did he send you this time?"
"A barely seasoned chicken, peas, and everything that says ’I’m healthy, eat me!" Fil smiled at the delivery man as she handed back the form before facing Elise. "Want to eat it?"
"Fil, I think my best decision in life is being your friend," said Elise while Fil placed the package of food on her desk. "My lunch had been free this week. Wow! I might actually save up at this point."
Fil chuckled. "If it helps you, then I’m glad."
"You don’t really want to eat them because you don’t like them?" Elise asked out of pure curiosity. "Or was it because it came from him?"
"Can it be both?"
"Fil."
"Thanks to Vincent, my admirers in the company are stepping up their games." Fil grinned. "I mean, it’s also because of you that I’m getting free lunches. If you didn’t spread the news of my status, then I don’t think I’ll have that privilege."
"I’m scared of you." Elise pouted, torn from what feeling she should feel at Fil’s logic in her situation.
Even before Fil started receiving peace offerings from her former fiance, many in the company would do anything to get her attention. One of them was buying her lunch or giving her food. Initially, Fil thought she was becoming a charity, and it made her look like a beggar. And yet, she never turned away the blessings because if she did, she might look like the bad guy.
That was Fil’s argument.
But ever since these flowers kept coming into their department, many of Fil’s admirers also stepped up their game. So now, everyone in the engineering department was getting their fair share of bubble teas or anything that Fil wouldn’t want.
"Everyone in this department is the charity now, isn’t it?" Elise shook her head, only to hold the food she would eat for lunch for free.
"Everyone’s happy." Fil smiled in satisfaction. "That’s what’s important."
"I guess you’re right." Elise shrugged. "Fil, there’s a new cafe that opened up a few blocks away from here. Should we go there?"
"Sure." Fil nodded, taking the bouquet as both of them departed their station for lunch.
"Where are you taking that?" asked Elise curiously while making their way out of the office.
Fil only smiled at her and said, "Wait," and then detoured to the pantry. Elise followed out of curiosity, watching Fil approach the bin and shoot the bouquet in it.
"Let’s go?" Fil faced her with a sweet smile.
"Uh, alright?" Elise nodded awkwardly, glancing at the bouquet in the trash can. "How much do you think those flowers cost?"
"I’m sure it’s not enough to graze his pockets," Fil remarked with sarcasm, walking past Elise. The latter kept staring at the poor flowers and sighed before following Fil.
"Filly, don’t you think you should tell him to stop?" Elise jogged to catch up to Fil, looking at her when she was walking beside her. "I feel sorry for the poor flowers."
"I already told him. Never listens."
"Maybe he really wants to win you back."
"I know."
"You sure you don’t want him in your life?"
Fil stopped when they reached the elevator, turning her head to Elise. The latter raised her brows the second their eyes met.
"Did I... say something wrong?" asked Elise nervously.
"No, it’s not like that." Fil smiled brightly. "I just think this is the reaction he wants from me."
"Huh?"
"Doing big gestures is what Vincent is good at. Two decades we’ve known each other and over a decade we’ve been together and yet, he still doesn’t remember I don’t like flowers." Her smile remained and her tone unbothered, but this gave Elise some enlightenment. "There’s only one kind of flower I like and the rest? I hate them."
"Oh..."
"Spending money is as easy as breathing. Why would I get moved or impressed just because one can breathe?"
Elise chuckled awkwardly. "I guess he really is in big trouble."
"He won’t be as long as he leaves me alone."
"I don’t think he will."
"Then I guess I need to donate a bigger trashcan in the office."
The elevator produced a ring, and it opened. Fil went inside after throwing her joke, cocking her head to the side as Elise stayed outside.
"You’re not coming?" Fil inquired, watching Elise press her lips and take a deep breath.
When Elise smiled, she stepped into the elevator and joined Fil. Upon reaching the lobby, Elise carried the lunch and then threw it away to the trashcan when they walked past it in the lobby.
"Why did you throw it?" Fil furrowed her brows while Elise grinned.
"I don’t think I want to eat something healthy and bland right now," Elise quipped. "He got tons of money. Now that I think about it, I’ve only been eating the lunches he sent because I feel guilty about wasting food. I never enjoyed them."
Both women chuckled before they resumed their steps, heading out to the newly opened cafe a few blocks away from their building. The cafe was just a five-minute walk. Elise, who had been on a "donation" diet for the past few days, ordered as if it was her birthday. Fil, on the other hand, just got a small order of pasta and refreshment.
"So, how’s Kenzo?" Elise inquired while they were waiting for their order, sitting across from each other. "Any news when he will be back?"
"He will be discharged today, but he still has to rest at home."
"But he lives alone." Elise frowned. "Who is going to take care of him?"
"I think he will go home to his parents."
"Oh..." Elise rocked her head. "I thought he didn’t get along well with his parents? Knowing him, he might go home alone stubbornly."
Fil rubbed her chin, unable to deny Elise’s worry. Kenzo was stubborn. He would rather starve himself to death than ask his parents for some money.
"I’ll check on him later," Fil offered with a smile.
"Scold him if you must," Elise suggested. "You know Fil, I’ve always wondered why Kenzo hates his parents. I mean, people have bad relationships with their parents or children. But Kenzo looks like he grew up fine."
"He doesn’t hate them."
"Huh?"
"Kenzo... is a little complicated." Fil shrugged. "But he doesn’t hate his parents. He just likes to live on his own terms, and his parents believe that they know what’s best for him."
"Oh... but they force him to go on blind dates."
Fil smiled. "It’s the least he can do, I think?"
"Why?"
"That’s a secret I cannot reveal." Fil grinned until her eyes were squinting. "Ask Kenzo when he’s back. He might tell you..."
Fil trailed off as her smile faded, turning her head to the person who suddenly turned up to the side of their table. Deep lines appeared between Elise’s brows, assessing the young lady standing by their table, before she heard Fil speak.
"Valerie?"
"Hah! I knew it. It was you." Valerie crossed her arms under her chest, assessing the changes on Fil with obvious disdain and contempt. "Aren’t you ashamed? While my brother is suffering because of you, here you are, having the time of your life."
She then glanced at Elise and scoffed. "Get out of here. I need to talk to her. It’s a serious matter and not just some gossip you seem to enjoy."
