Chapter 99: Keep an eye

The sirens echoed from a distance and one by one, Jinping, Aang and Yibo were escorted inside the police car. Daxia, Shilin and Yong stood at a distance, watching them leave.

Daxia held tears in her eyes. She personally never gelled with Yibo that much but Aang and Jinping were different. She did consider them as good friends, and it hurt her to see them facing the consequences despite it being Anhe who pushed their limits. She understood their frustration very well.

Maybe I would have hurt Anhe too had I gotten the chance.

That thought scared her.

"Here."

A glass of water appeared before her sight and she looked up, surprised. Shilin stood before her with a concerned look marred on his face. "Drink some water."

She took a moment and accepted it. "Thanks..."

"No problem. I understand it’s hard for us all."

Her eyes welled. "Now that it has finally come to this, I have decided to break everything with Anhe. But I feel guilty."

"Why?"

"Because I am finally free. But I am free because Aang and Jinping stepped up. They broke laws but it allowed me to finally escape her clutches. But they cannot feel the same freedom because they will be in jail now. We all equally suffered yet I am the only one who gets to be free. I feel terrible. This shouldn’t happen to them..."

Daxia looked left and right and clasped her hands together as she peeked at Yong. But Yong wasn’t looking at her.

She made up her mind and bowed. "P-Please forgive me, Yong."

Yong raised her brow and looked at her. "For what?"

"I didn’t take your side when you went to complain to Principal Geng. I was there at the club. Obviously, I knew the truth yet I allowed you to get suspended. I should have told him that Anhe was forcing the guys to trouble and harass you. I am really sorry that I didn’t come forward...I was still very afraid of the shoplifting video that Anhe had of me."

She lowered her gaze thinking of Li Beiye.

Yong watched her and held her gaze for a long moment.

Daxia lifted her head and wryly smiled feeling her silence. "It’s okay if you don’t want to forgive me. I don’t have any right to when things just conveniently ended in our favor today. It’s too late."

"Not really," she shrugged. "I understand your reasons. I took an educated guess."

She looked surprised. "Really?"

Yong simply let out a smile which made Daxia’s heart skip a beat for some reason.

She is really so pretty. Was Anhe insecure of her?

Daxia opened and closed her lips and eventually said, "W-we should hang out s-sometime together...if you still wanna be my friend though..."

"Hooo."

"I-I know Li Beiye too!"

"Hm? I have seen her on campus."

"Yeah. She was part of the group too until...She is also smart and really beautiful. I th-think you will like her. We can hang out together...if you wish..."

"Sounds good to me."

"G-great!"

It took a lot of courage for Daxia to make the conversation last until this point, so she quickly excused herself and left. On the way she bumped into Bojing, the latter profusely apologizing to her.

"S-Sorry! I-I am really sorry!"

"I-It’s fine."

Bojing wanted to leave as he didn’t wish to anger Daxia just like he did in the horror house. But he stopped as she tugged on his coat. "I...I am sorry."

He tilted his head. "B-But I should apologize for not w-watching my steps."

"No. I am not talking about now," she guiltily tucked her hair behind her ear. "I apologize for my rude behavior back at the tunnel. I was glaring at you and made you uncomfortable."

"Oh."

She threw a hesitant look towards Shilin and said, "A-actually, it was always Anhe who hung out with him. She never let any other girl near him because she was so possessive of him and I always wanted to talk to him. So...when I saw that I would get a chance to spend some time with him in the tunnel, I was ecstatic. I wanted to be closer to him even if for a short while. But you came and kind of broke the rhythm so I got annoyed. But I know it’s not your fault."

"No, no, I w-wasn’t offended. Really. It’s fine."

She smiled. "Thank you. You are really kind."

He then asked, "Are you p-planning to confess to him?"

"I don’t think so."

"Why not?"

She looked at Shilin and said, "I have a feeling I will be rejected. I can kind of sense his answer."

"Y-you shouldn’t think like that," Bojing urged. "You shouldn’t regret that you didn’t confess. He might be in-interested in you too o-or even if he isn’t now, he might g-give it a thought."

Daxia shook her head with a sad smile. "I cannot explain it. Call it my instinct maybe? I am sure he wouldn’t return my feelings. It’s okay. I will be happy as his friend too."

Bojing’s shoulders slumped.

From a distance, Yong kept watching Bojing and Daxia’s interaction with interest. "He is a sharp one."

"Are you talking to me?" Shilin asked.

"Who else is standing beside me?"

"Whenever has that mattered?"

"Don’t flatter yourself. I would rather drown my head into the sand rather than tolerate your company, but I couldn’t help with the exception today."

"What changed?"

She pointed her gaze at Bojing which he followed. "Mr. Lu?"

"He noticed the scar on my cheek."

"And?"

"Which didn’t exist when I was walking in the tunnel."

Silence.

"He asked me about that discrepancy. There was the scar. Then it wasn’t. Then it was back again. He was really confused but also confident about his claim."

"What did you say?"

"I felt bad gaslighting him."

"You feel bad too?"

"When that person is not you."

"You should have been careful."

"You shouldn’t have been blind too," she narrowed her eyes. "Mr. Lu seems settled for now, but keep an eye on him anyway. He might feel the sudden urge later to spill some beans to that Inspector which I would rather avoid."

"When would I get the chance to keep an eye on him?"

She smiled. "I believe you will. Do your job properly this time or you know how I can be."

"Will you hang out with Daxia and Beiye?"

"If they are interesting enough."

"Daxia is looking for friendship."

"So does love too. Any plans of answering that flowery confession if it happens?"

He didn’t answer.

Yong stretched her index and middle finger and pointed them towards his eyes first and then towards Bojing’s figure. "Your job. Don’t forget it."
