The Devil Doctor's Spicy Love -
Chapter 100: The man in the wheelchair
Chapter 100: The man in the wheelchair
The case was now officially closed, but Jia decided to visit the amusement park one last time to take care of some formalities. There was still a wide streak of the dimming sun’s orange glow cast upon the sky signifying that night would fall soon.
"Jiaaaaaa!"
The twins brightly trotted towards her, their chubby arms flailing at her. Jia widened her eyes in surprise. "Weiyun. Limei."
She immediately bent on her knees and kissed the top of their heads. "How are you two still here?"
"Because we didn’t leave haha!" Lihua chimed in.
"But I told you all to leave, didn’t I? I wasn’t sure when I would have gotten the time."
She grinned. "I was sure you would. I have very good instincts."
Xinyue sneered. "The only redeemable quality."
"Stay quiet, stupid brother!"
He shrugged and looked at Jia. "Congratulations on solving the case. The victory taste is different when you solve it within the same day, right?"
Jia scratched her head, abashed. "I guess."
Lanying chuckled. "We still have some time left to enjoy the rest of the rides. We should use it to the fullest then."
Ruiling raised her arm all excited. "I am ready!"
"Baaaa!" Little Lan in her crib giggled and mimicked her Aunt too. Qingqing was stretching her beautiful, furry arms.
The husbands followed whatever their wives had to say.
Mingshen grimaced in disdain. "Those kiddie rides are boring."
Jia smiled. "You are free to turn and leave. The lesser, the merrier in your case."
"How can I give up on you, Spicy? I am ready to sacrifice my precious time on these puny rides if it means I get to irk the hell out of you~"
Bojing tugged his coat and said with misty eyes. "You shouldn’t bully sis anymore. She is tired from the case."
"Are you her assistant or mine?"
"Yours."
"So start taking my side before I convert your assistant status into a research subject one."
He crawled back, terrified and ran towards Lihua’s side.
"Waaaaa..."
As the gang was ready to leave, down into the children’s world, Limei’s eyes sparkled with delight as she noticed a delicate, colorful butterfly fly past her forehead. Her body automatically moved to follow the butterfly’s path as she waved her hand in front to catch it.
Wei immediately caught Limei running farther away, and it was dangerous to run like that amidst the crowd. He was about to chase after her when Jia said, "Ah let me go after her. You go ahead with everyone. I will bring her back."
He paused and nodded.
At the same time, Limei never let go of the butterfly’s sight and her ambition to catch it fueled her little steps with vigor. But she couldn’t, making her tiny brows scrunch together in dismay.
Eventually, the butterfly rested on top of a higher point. Limei brightened feeling her chance was finally here. Her hand inched closer towards the butterfly when she felt a motion above her.
Limei looked up and met the gaze of a man. He was staring right back at her with a pleasant and amusing smile settled on his lips. The motion she caught was him raising his right hand and bringing his index finger closer to his lips.
Sshh.
She tilted her head sideways questioningly. Her face glittered with joy. "Buttefwy!"
"Yes it is. Do you want to hold it?"
She bobbed her head hard.
"Don’t speak a word then," he smiled.
Limei didn’t understand, but she soon focused her attention towards the butterfly perched upon the left hand’s knuckle of the man.
"Bring your hand forward."
Limei obliged. The man, very quietly and slowly and patiently as if there was all the time in the world, began to move his hand fraction by fraction. His hand got closer to hers, and Limei sensed that the butterfly would come to her. But it didn’t move for a long, long time.
"Patience."
The two syllables calmly escaped his lips.
Eventually, the butterfly lightly fluttered its wings and took a short flight. It hopped onto the back of Limei’s hand. Her bright black eyes spoke volumes of luster.
"Limei!"
Jia hastily walked and stopped behind her. "There you are. You shouldn’t run off like this, you know? What if you got lost?"
"Jiaaaa!"
It was a challenge for Limei to control the burst of her endless excitement, but she still pointed at the butterfly. "Buttefwy!"
"Oh my, it’s so pretty."
It was then that she sensed the presence of someone. She traced her gaze that met with a figure sitting on a wheelchair, who stared back at her in silence.
Dressed in a white shirt covered by a brown coat, the man was of an average build. His deep eyes exuded a tranquil patience as if the passage of time was slow just for him. His arms and legs and body seemed to tell a struggle of their own, yet not even a shred of that weakness reflected in his dignity and grace. His physicality looked shrunken in the wheelchair but not his presence. He held a light knowing smile on his lips as if he was the bearer of everybody’s secrets.
Mid-thirties maybe? Jia thought to herself.
"I am sorry if she disturbed you."
"She didn’t."
His voice escaped with a pleasing stillness to it.
"You should take your niece’s picture with the butterfly. I think it will be a good memory."
"Oh yes. Good idea."
Jia took out her phone. "Smile Limei."
Limei brightly grinned and stood still as the butterfly rested on her hand.
*Click*
"Such a cute picture!" She grinned.
Jia then looked at the man and asked, "How did you know that she is my niece?"
"She isn’t your daughter."
"How can you be sure?"
"She doesn’t resemble you."
"She might resemble my husband."
"But you are not married."
"Because you don’t see a ring?"
"Because you aren’t ready to wear one," he smiled.
She said nothing.
"You aren’t ready for a relationship either."
"You are an expert in love?"
"Love?" He looked surprised. "It’s a foreign feeling for me. But I have seen the foreign emotion in other people or the desire to want that. You don’t have that desire."
"I might have had a one night stand."
"I have met the types of people who have one night stands. You are not one of them."
"It might have been accidental."
"You are too smart to fall for the cliched spiked drink plot."
"Am I carrying a signboard somewhere I am unaware of?"
The man smiled again. The same smile. Amusing and knowing.
"You were handling the accident that occurred at the horror house today. I saw you taking charge. I believe only somebody from the law enforcement is entitled to do that. Hence I would like to believe that any cop with a half smart brain wouldn’t fall for spiked juice tactics."
"She could be my neighbor’s or my friend’s daughter. Not necessarily my niece. She didn’t even call me Aunt."
"Because you came here with your family. I vaguely saw the group you were with."
"How can you say they are family?"
"I won’t say all of them but most of them. You don’t seem to be the type of person to have many friends. I can tell."
Her mouth twitched.
Is he insulting me?
He smiled again. "I didn’t say it as an insult. I mean you prefer a small tight knit group. You might have only two to three close friends if I guess."
Two is right on the mark, she thought. Huojin and Nuan.
"If you came here with that big of a group, then they must be your family. That means you have a brother or a sister in that family which makes this girl your niece."
