Chapter 96: Each one to their own (1)
Bojing shivered and gulped at the corner with the mountain of stress in the ward that was close to its breaking point.
Anhe jumped on her bed, seeing Jia walk in and retracted herself in her mother’s hug. "I won’t go to jail, I tell you!"
Mr. Geng and Mrs. Geng consoled her, continuously soothing her frightened nerves. "Nobody will take my daughter to jail!"
"Let’s talk about the ones who would be arrested for harming Anhe. Then we will talk about her."
She turned towards the group. "I am giving you three a last chance to turn yourselves in before I do it myself. At least, you can earn some leniency then. I have all the evidence I need."
Jinping trembled with disturbance while Aang remained calm.
Yibo sneered. "Don’t think you can pull off cliche lies. You actually have nothing with you but still want to draw out false statements from us."
"We will see that after I am done talking and all three of you go to jail."
Daxia asked speechless, "A-All three of them? How is it possible?"
"Isn’t this getting more dramatic now?" Yong chuckled.
Jia opened something on her phone and showed it to everyone. "This is the maze’s layout I got from the attendant. The names Aang, Yibo, and Jinping marked here are the areas where the three were walking around. Anhe at the left most part means the place where she was found unconscious. Let’s start with Jinping."
He stiffened. "I a-already said I never crossed paths with Anhe! I simply followed the exit sign when it was lit up and went straight out."
"You are a liar, Jinping!" Anhe spat in fury.
She raised her palm to stop talking and asked him, "So you didn’t stop anywhere at any point? Any dead end?"
"No...? I was moving around looking for the exit and after some time, the sign board lit up."
Jia glanced at Bojing and asked, "Bojing. Can you switch off all the lights please?"
"Switch off? O-okay!"
"W-why switch off the lights?" A bad foreboding unnerved his heartbeats.
"You will know soon."
Bojing pressed the buttons and darkness enveloped the ward. The only source of light was the faint brightness flickering from the machines and monitors.
"Hey what’s that reddish on your sleeve...?" Daxia couldn’t help but ask as she squinted her eyes, noticing a light glow.
"Huh? What glow?"
Jia held his arm and made him turn on his back. Near the shoulder area of his shirt, a smudge-like tinge of something red glowed within the dark room. Jinping widened his eyes as he pulled his shirt to see.
"I don’t know what this is...!"
"Please switch on the lights again, Bojing."
"Yes!"
As the lights got back on, Jia scrolled on her phone and opened a picture she clicked.
"This is the picture of one of the dead ends which is right beside the place where Anhe was attacked. The walls of this dead end are painted with a glow-in-the-dark paint. This is the palm print where you can see the finger edges a little smeared.
I believe if we test it, the paint would turn out to be the same. Jinping said he never stopped anywhere and headed straight for the exit. So my question is, why would you go into a dead end when the exit sign was already up, and how did the paint end up getting on your sleeve?"
Jinping rapidly lost color from his face as he fumbled to explain. "Th-That is some misunderstanding...I n-never went into the dead end. I don’t know how...I never met her!"
"You did."
Jia pointed at a spot marked as A. "You see the place where you were? If I draw a straight line from your spot to point A, you actually did have some line of sight between these two walls to potentially see Anhe passing by point A.
I verified it myself in the maze with the attendant’s help. You caught her figure and you followed her. You two met and walked along the path until you reached the incident dead end. Something triggered you and in the heat of the moment, you hit her head.
You panicked hard after that because you didn’t expect yourself to turn violent. But you had to run away as soon as possible. Probably you heard Aang or Yibo coming from a distance, so you escaped that dead end and entered this dead end at point B which I have marked here. You had to wait for that person to leave so that they wouldn’t catch you hanging around Anhe. So you stayed inside for sometime.
You must have been tired with all that adrenaline rush, so you leaned on the wall and that glow-in-the-dark paint got smudged onto your sleeve. Nobody noticed it before because it was bright and sunny outside."
Jinping shuddered hard. He felt his tongue tied to respond to these claims.
"I will listen to your side but first let me talk about Aang and Yibo too."
Jia’s eyes narrowed at Aang. "Out of the three, I must say you were the smartest. You kept asking me that I need to find some other evidence to suggest your involvement, right? Well, I got it with me."
She took out a small vinyl plastic bag and retrieved the piece of fabric from it. "This belongs to your jacket, right?"
Aang stared at it with scrutiny and the instant he realized it, the light in his irises flickered.
"Can you remove your jacket please?"
He kept his gaze fixed at her and without a sound or protest, took off his jacket. Jia patted through its entire length until she found a small torn off area under the collar that hid the tear. She matched the piece with the hole found which fit perfectly. "Yup, this is from your jacket. Do you know where I found it?"
He said nothing.
"There are a lot of vines and branches on the crime scene dead end’s wall, right? It was stuck on one such branch obscured within the leaves. I didn’t find it the first time because the leaves hid it from me. But I found it when I was returning from the immediate neighbor’s dead end. That’s where you escaped, right?
This point B here. After kicking Anhe and breaking and hiding her phone, you opened the collapsible wall and hid in the next dead end. But your jacket got caught within the vines and in a hurry to leave, you forcibly pulled your jacket. It caused a part of it to tear."
She folded her arms and challenged his gaze. "Now will you tell me that your jacket’s torn piece was planted there by Yibo or Jinping too like the cotton candy on her dress?"
"Fuck you Aang!" Anhe protested with a scream. "How dare you kick me!"
Jia tilted her head. "I am curious though. Did you figure out the collapsible walls before finding Anhe? Your father is a civil engineer. You are studying architecture yourself. You know how real structures look and feel like. Perhaps, you detected that some walls in the maze were actually not walls at all. You could open them like doors for shortcuts."
