Chapter 72: The three tunnels (2)

Inside the second tunnel, the air was cold, almost icy, and the scent of dampness lingered like an ominous warning. Daxia covered her nose, the smell of decay twitching her nostrils with displeasure. The darkness obscured her view as if she was walking into a blind alley.

At the center of the seemingly endless corridor stood an antique, its surface cracked and stained. Its head was tilted at an angle as if somebody had snapped and broke its bone. The view was grotesque and stomach churning.

"Eekkkk!!"

She scooted closer to Shilin in horror, her heart racing fast with trepidation.

Shilin looked at her and assuredly smiled. "It’s alright. It’s a fake antique."

"Y-Yeah..." she wasn’t sure if her hoarse voice was due to these nightmarish tricks conjuring her sense of reality or the fact that her extra proximity to Shilin was the culprit.

She didn’t dare touch him or try to hold his hand. She peeked at him and in the same moment, Shilin looked down at her as well. "Are you okay?"

"Y-Yes! I-I am fine!"

"It’s fine to walk closer to me if you wish. I don’t want you tripping and hurting yourself."

It wasn’t visible in the darkness, but a tinge blush appeared on her cheeks, and she nervously fidgeted with her hair locks. "I-Is it really okay?"

"Yeah."

From his side, he heard a disdainful sneer, making his attention turn towards Yong. "Did you say something?"

Her eyes narrowed at him with iciness. "Mind your own business."

Shilin awkwardly cleared his throat. "My bad."

Daxia frowned with such rudeness, and she threw a bitter look towards Yong. A moment later, her gaze hesitated and she looked away.

On a dilapidated wooden table, an old music box played a haunting melody that reverberated through the chamber. Its notes were melancholic and unsettling, as if plucked from the depths of a restless spirit’s lament. Antique dolls with vacant, soulless eyes sat in eerie silence on top of tables. Some of them seemed to follow the group with their gaze, their lips twisting into a wicked smile.

They walked on and against one wall, a row of ghostly apparitions, floated and wailed in anguish. Their translucent forms drifted and swirled and their mournful cries echoed through the room. Daxia’s face began losing its color, the twisted faces sending shivers down her spine. One of the ghosts locked its eyes on hers and flew straight in her direction.

"Aahhhhhhh!!!" She ducked her head, shivering badly.

"Hey it’s alright. It was just a projection, nothing else."

Daxia was close to tears as she slowly raised her head. Indeed, the ghost had just passed through her. She heaved a big sigh of relief.

Sniffling, she lightly tugged on his jacket. "I really thought I was d-dead..."

Yong simply chuckled, making her press her lips harder and inducing discomfort.

Yong shrugged and withdrew herself, not mocking or talking anymore.

Shilin tapped her hands lightly. "All these are just illusions and contraptions."

She bit her lower lip and shyly nodded.

As the group moved on to find the exit, a thud resounded in the air as if something was slammed shut. Daxia shut her eyes, sniffling with the hair-raising vibrations making her shiver. Continuing on their journey, a dismal and sinister sound then buzzed within the walls. It bounced back and forth from all directions, leaving confusion hanging in the air.

"N-Now what...?" Daxia questioned, tension tightening her nerves.

A strange, sliding noise seemed to creep closer and closer as if something dark and perilous would soon collide against them. But a few moments later, it accompanied with a shrieking cry and before anybody could grasp the situation, a portion of the wall in front of them suddenly collapsed, ejecting a human outside. Daxia sharply gasped.

Shilin’s eyes slowly widened as the man trembling and shuddering before him slowly raised his head. "Mr. Lu...?"

Bojing blinked, his misty eyes trying to recognize the figure in front of him through his blurred vision. Eventually he did so, a gasp escaping his lips. "Shilin!"

"Are we supposed to find the exit here?" Jia asked, placing her hands on her waist as she scoured the trapped room for clues. She scratched her head and she then recalled.

"Wait, I do remember something the staff attendant had said about figuring out the exit on our own..." she mumbled. "She also said that if we couldn’t do that within a set timer, the exit sign would automatically light up."

Making the already frightened visitors find the exit in the horror house...the designers here have indeed given their all in giving the real terror effect, she thought.

That terror effect, though, had no effect on the steel hearts of two people stuck in the said room. Jia deftly moved around to find the escape route without a drop of sweat to her brow while Mingshen was busy appreciating the architecture and layout of the trapped chamber.

"Hey Spicy look at this doll here with her left eye gouged out. Not a very sophisticated job done here," Mingshen voiced out his grievances.

Jia wryly asked, shuffling and shaking the pillows on the creaky bed for any hidden mechanism. "Why, you want to complain about it to the manager?"

"Of course! I am against anybody with poor knife skills. It’s a sin. So, I was thinking of offering them some elite training~ Naturally, not for free," he innocently blinked, "Isn’t it such a great deal? Both manager and I in profits~"

She sneered, walking away from the bed. "I can only see a one-sided profit here as you would squeeze them dry - aah!"

She felt a weight on her left ankle as if something had grabbed it, and she tripped with the sudden grasp. Mingshen’s eyes squinted, and he swiftly grabbed her waist. But gravity worked against them and Jia got pushed against his chest hard, tumbling down on the floor.

"Ugh...what the hell happened?" Jia balked in annoyance.

She froze soon after, her countenance violently twitching with displeasure, realizing that she had fallen on top of Mingshen and at this moment, their faces too close to her taste.
