The Devil Doctor's Spicy Love
Chapter 56: One life, one chance

Chapter 56: One life, one chance

Jia surveyed his eyes which shimmered full of deceit and trickery. "It’s hard imagining Yang Mingshen wanting to protect somebody. You didn’t want Ma Zhilan and Dai Meihui to be caught."

"I only protect my own interests, Spicy~"

"How was helping them serving your interests?"

Mingshen waved his hand as if it was so obvious. "If all smart people went to jail, then how will I get quality breathing research subjects? Do you think my services are free? I was planning to make them pay back with their bodies."

Her mouth twitched.

If it was somebody else who said that, the conversation would have taken a whole nother misleading interpretation.

"They would be perfect for my experiments, especially the cool grandma with cool eyesight to study healthy aging and complexion. People are dying to live longer. Such an irony, isn’t it?" He chuckled. "It was fun challenging you too. I wanted to see for how far and long my intervention can fool you. I must say I did a great job~"

"You think you can interfere in an investigation and manipulate it for the sake of your research and fun?"

"Why not?" His eyes widened. "My research and entertainment is very important."

"Even if it means letting the ones who have committed a crime scot free?" She sharply retorted.

Mingshen burst into laughter. "My dear, my dear. The criminals in the eyes of the law are not necessarily criminals in my eyes too. If you ask me, they did a damn good job of killing a brainless piece of shit. Alas, they encountered an equally damn good cop," he sighed regretfully.

"Ending someone’s life is not the solution to anybody’s problem, Yang Mingshen," Jia’s wintry voice whispered between them with a harsh edge. "Dai Meihui didn’t have to stain her hands with blood and be forced to leave her son. Ma Zhilan didn’t have to be driven away from her granddaughter and spend her life in jail. Do you see Yun and Juan? What did they do to deserve to suffer this separation? It never ends with just death, Mingshen..."

Her eyes flickered once with a flash of an indescribable emotion, "Death only begins an unimaginable suffering."

Mingshen gazed into her eyes that held a hint of vulnerability. "Are you seeing yourself in those kids?"

The question made her freeze as if she was dropped into a pool of ice cold water.

"The young Jia, the child Jia who watched her parents get shot to death by the teenager Zhao Wei? A child who lived a life without the shadow of her parents behind her similar to what Yun would face now."

The nightmarish memories gushed into her mind before she quickly put a hard stop from them invading any further. That fateful night remained grim enough in her life till now to engulf her heart in darkness. To numb her senses with the betrayal her parents left her as their legacy.

Jia held her shaky breath and met his casual gaze. "Regardless of what I see or not, it doesn’t change the truth that Dai Meihui and Ma Zhilan are guilty. I understand where they come from, but shedding someone’s blood is never the way out."

"How rude. It’s a good way out for the not so bright people polluting this earth with their not so bright presence," he harrumphed.

With a contemplative countenance, she squinted her eyes. "I did see that Ma Yanyu had been an irresponsible mother. People make mistakes and lack certain sensibilities at times, but a chance goes a long way. She regrets her behavior and truly wants to change herself-"

"Correction~" Mingshen whistled. "Change herself only after it came upon her and her daughter’s life. The cool grandma with the cool eyesight gave her plenty of chances before. The old hag got her fair share of warnings before too both from her son and daughter-in-law. But none of those chances and warnings changed them. Life wouldn’t have been so merciful to give cool grandma’s daughter-in-law a chance had she really lost her daughter that day~"

Mingshen raised his index finger to signal the number one with an ominous smile stretching across his lips. "One heartbeat stops and your life ends right there. One bullet through your forehead and everything is over. One chance to get your shit together or face the consequences - whether it’s losing your child or your life. As for relying on the law, well I never counted on it anyway~ It’s as hopeless as a fish trying to breathe out of water."

Jia’s expression darkened. "Justice is always there to protect the civilians."

"And that’s where you are wrong, dear~ Your justice only protects the ones it wants to. It’s that angel who smiles down at you but then you see that she has black wings instead~"

"Yang Mingshen!" She had lost the last thread of her patience. "You are here as a medical examiner to help with the investigation, not derail it! You literally intervened to help them escape from their consequences. Is this how you are going to be a part of this? By messing up the case or giving false leads? If you want to have fun, go back to your lab but don’t you dare do anything to jeopardize justice!"

"Don’t worry, Spicy. You are not going to be a fan of your justice for very long~" he winked.

The air of confrontation shattered with Huojin’s entrance. "Jia."

He sensed some grave tension between them that felt different than their usual banter. "...Some problem?"

Jia took a deep breath and broke off her eye contact with Mingshen. "Nothing. What is it?"

"We are okay to take Ma Zhilan, Dai Meihui and Dai Fengge away. Ma Wenyan and Ma Yanyu are taking care of Juan. It was difficult with Yun, but Mrs. Shen is doing okay now. It took a lot for help from Dai Meihui though."

She gave a solemn nod. "Let’s go."

Throwing a last vicious stare at Mingshen, she walked away from him.

He chuckled as he watched her straight and confident back getting farther and farther away. He sat back on a front row seat and stretched his arms. He saw Yun outside with the social worker and stared at him, his chin resting on his palm.

"What happen to Grandma?" Yun had asked Mingshen the first time he took him to watch over him.

Mingshen arched his brow with a hint of thought as he looked at the little boy. "What do you want to hear?"

He blinked at him, not understanding his question.

"Do you want to hear that she will wake up or that she won’t? What do you want the answer to be?"

Yun gave it a sincere thought and said, "When Grandma is awake, Mama cry a lot. She talks bad to Mama. I want Grandma sleeping more so Mama not cry."

Mingshen tilted his head as his gaze became more deliberative. "I see...Did you see what happened to your Grandma?"

He nodded. "That grandma hurt my grandma. I saw. I told Aunt and Dada that Grandma is sick. But they scold me..." his eyes began to tear up.

He craned his head towards Ma Zhilan, who was on the other side, calm and poised. She didn’t seem jittery or furtive.

"Oh~" he looked back at Yun and asked, "Did your Mama want to take you with her anywhere today?"

He nodded again. "Where Mama works. But Grandma said no," his shoulders slumped. "Grandma want me with aunty. But I want to be with Mama..."

"Hooo...Interesting," he chuckled.

He then pointed his gaze at Jia and said, "You see that pretty sister?"

Yun looked at Jia and nodded.

"She will want to ask you some questions later. About what you saw. But don’t tell her that you saw that grandma hurting your grandma."

"Why?"

"Do you love your Mama?"

Yun’s misty eyes shone. "I love Mama a lot!"

"So if you don’t want her to go anywhere, then do as I say," he placed a finger on his lips with a sly smile. "I don’t know how far this will take us. That pretty sister is damn smart. But let’s play the best we can~ Oh and you cannot tell anybody that I told you."

Yun half-understood things, nevertheless he nodded obediently.

"And good news. Your grandma is never going to wake up again. So rejoice~"
