The Devil Doctor's Spicy Love
Chapter 373: A new beginning

Chapter 373: A new beginning

It was quite a task to ever make Mingshen angry. His sense of confidence and self-esteem topped the charts so high that it was practically impossible for people to get under his skin because he simply never bothered.

Jealous of his handsome looks? It was your problem.

Jealous of his family and wealth? Again a ’you’ problem.

Jealous of his talent? Definitely a ’you’ problem.

His father was a quiet man who failed people’s provocative tactics simply by embracing silence. His patience was a territory of its own that was enough to explode the limits of others’ patience.

His mother, a self-sufficient and dangerous assassin from whom Mingshen inherited his most personality traits, exhibited similar reactions. Only Mingshen angered the hell out of her, the rest of the world didn’t even reach the index page of her life’s book.

Apart from that one time in the distant past, Mingshen had never felt angry. Fury was a doctor’s vice was what he believed.

If you are angry, you cannot make sound decisions and if you cannot make sound decisions, you cannot be a doctor.

But right now he found himself on the cusp of breaching a dangerous stage he thought he would never encounter in his life - all because of watching one woman’s heart-wrenching sobs.

He stared at Jia, who was in a trembling and child-like state of terror as if she was being chased by ghosts. For the first time, he saw the ever confident and decisive Jia falling into an abyss she didn’t know how to come out of.

So he was now angry. Very angry.

He wanted to know just what kind of people could drag such a fine woman into this state? The woman who never backed off from a fight with him was now begging him to clarify that she never seduced him with tactics like pity.

He smiled. "What are you saying, Spicy? Why do you need to clarify anything? Am I not the one shamelessly trying to climb on your bed all this time?"

Jia hugged her knees closer to her chest, clasping her hands together. "Mom and Dad.."

"They don’t define you."

Her face turned ashen. "You...don’t understand," she whispered. "I don’t de-deserve to-"

"Should a sexually assaulted victim start getting defined by her abuser?"

She three him a blank stare. "What are you saying...?"

"I am asking you a very simple question," he held a no-nonsense gaze.

"Should she leave the city out of shame? Should she forever be burdened and haunted by the abuser’s crime? Yes, I am comparing two different crimes here, but what you are feeling right now is not any different from what that woman would feel."

"T-That is different!" She breathed hard. "I am their d-daughter so-"

"Predators are often family, you know? It’s not the question of whether the person who has suffered and the people who have hurt them are strangers or family. The question is does one’s existence is solely defined by what they did?"

Jia trembled, feeling unable to think.

"Okay, let’s say you leave Beijing and settle in some other city. Or maybe that woman. What would you do if the new people around you somehow learn about your past? People are the same everywhere and you and her will go through the same cycle all over again. So, will you move to a third city now? Or maybe another country altogether? Where is the end here? So what is the moral of the story here?"

She didn’t respond.

"That the world was always a shitty place and will always be a shitty place. With or without a past, people always love to drag you down nevertheless. It’s in our nature because we want to feel our own lives are so perfect and sparkling. Proving yourself to the world is as meaningless as a rabbit begging mercy from a hawk."

Silence.

"You cannot change the world but you can be that one hell of an ant who can even topple the elephant with its one bite. So..."

Mingshen got up on his feet and pulled her up too despite her resistance. "It’s time to leave."

"Le-Leave...?"

"You cannot outgrow their shadow if you keep living in this house. This house is rotting you from within. You face the world’s criticisms in the day and in the night, you return to the same place where it all began. This is damaging, not healing."

Jia struggled to catch on. "I ca-cannot leave this house. Everything-"

"Needs a fresh start. I am not telling you to escape and never return here. I am telling you to return when you feel you have become your own identity other than being only Song Lan and Song Wuying’s daughter."

She paled. "I...I cannot...!"

Even the mere thought terrified her.

He frowned. "If you can challenge me in my own kingdom then yes you can."

She immediately backed off from that notion and frantically shook off her head.

"Impossible...It’s impossible..." she murmured to herself.

The thought of leaving her apartment had never crossed her mind. It felt like betrayal to her parents and childhood.

"Now you see it?" He stared at her. "This house has become more of a shackle for you than freedom. Whether a mansion or a small apartment, a house is supposed to be a warm place but you are only feeling cold and dark here. It will continue to do so unless you take a step forward. And I am right here to walk with you."

Her vision blurred as tears fell. She glanced around her room with a vacant gaze. It was then when it slowly dawned upon her how stranger the walls felt to her despite living here for more than twenty years. A sense of fatigue rushed all over her body.

"...I don’t know anymore. Wh-where will I even go?" She whispered in defeat. "I c-cannot burden Lihua..."

Mingshen tipped his head to the side. "Why did you mention little chili? The Zhaos’ are not even in the picture. I am taking you with me to the Yang mansion."
