Chapter 360: Nothing serious

"Look, Superintendent Song. I don’t know who told you what but this is not as serious as you think this is."

The mistress of the Hou family and Hou Tengqi’s mother, Hou Huan, explained to Jia. They were at the hospital outside the ward where Hou Anming was being tended to. His wife was by his side, concerned and shedding tears of worry.

Jia craned her neck and took a glance inside. "You say this was an accident?"

"Of course. Just a simple accident."

"I don’t think glass shards would be stuck in his forehead out of a simple accident."

Her eyes narrowed.

"So who hit your second son with the vase?"

"No vase has been broken, Superintendent."

"Who are you trying to protect Mrs. Hou?"

She smiled. "Skirmishes happen in every family. Doesn’t mean that cops should be involved for every little fight. Now if you will excuse me, I have to talk to the doctors."

Huojin raised his brow. "They really want to hide it with all their might."

"I believe that’s why the caller remained anonymous. They didn’t want Mrs. Hou pinning them for babbling unnecessary details. Must be somebody working in the family."

"So what should we do?"

Jia scratched her chin. "We cannot do much if Hou Anming doesn’t want to file a complaint. Plus, it’s his younger brother. They would just wrap it up within themselves with a neat ribbon."

"But why did he get so aggressive in the first place?"

"They don’t really like each other."

Jia turned towards the voice and blinked at Zhuo Syaoran who was wheeled by his bodyguard.

"Hello, Superintendent."

"Mr. Zhuo."

"It seems you are surprised to see me here."

"Ah well..."

"Our families have known each other for a long time. I came as soon as I heard the news."

"What did you mean when you said that they don’t like each other?"

He smiled. "Brothers. There ought to be some differences. The youngest well...always have been quite passionate. I think you wasted a trip here. There won’t be any complaints lodged."

"I guess so."

He asked his bodyguard, Cui Shin, to wheel him towards Huo Anming’s room and bade goodbye to Jia.

Huojin sighed. "Well somebody wanted us to do something."

Jia recognized a familiar figure from the corner of her eye and said, "Meng Rin!"

She looked back, surprised, her expression blooming with joy immediately.

"Miss. Song!"

She ran up to her side, jumping into her hug.

Jia was taken aback by the gesture and she couldn’t help but think about Hou Tengqi.

"Are you okay?"

"Yes, yes," she realized her excitement and smiled awkwardly. "I just felt..."

Jia smiled. "I am glad to meet you too."

"Hey," Huojin greeted her too.

Meng Rin urgently asked, "What are you doing here?"

So Jia explained the whole story. Huojin looked around and suggested. "Let’s walk and talk?"

"Yeah better than crowding here."

Jia asked as they stood before the elevator, "Do you know anything about this supposed accident?"

Meng Rin clasped her hands together and pressed her lips.

"You don’t have to be afraid. The anonymous caller refused to share their identity too. We assure you that you won’t get into any problem if you tell us."

She took a deep breath and nodded. "I was there for breakfast today. Hou Anming and Hou Jielun got into a huge argument and he threw a glass at his brother when he got too furious."

"What was the argument about?" Huojin asked, stopping by to get some coffee from the coffee machine. "You ladies want some?"

They didn’t and Meng Rin continued. "I don’t understand it completely honestly. It seems that Hou Jielun is sick. Hou Anming told to go to London for some kind of an advanced treatment? I am not sure, but it made Hou Jielun erupt."

Jia’s brows knitted slightly and she faintly recollected Mingshen talking about this.

It was Yang Cheng who was his doctor first but for some reason, he left the Hou family and never looked back again.

It is Dr. Shi Ningkai who is currently their family doctor, right?

"Mrs. Hou and Hou Tengqi contained the situation before he became even more aggressive. Then Hou Tengqi berated Hou Anming for saying unnecessary things to him..."

Huojin raised his brow. "Seems like the youngest brother is quite adored and doted on. Instead of admonishing his behavior, the elder brother is targeted instead."

"Yes. But Hou Tengqi doesn’t let me talk to him that much. Not that..." she cleared her throat, "I feel like talking to him either."

Jia blinked. "Why?"

"I don’t know...He just gives me w-weird vibes. I do talk to Hou Anming though. He is quiet but nice."

Jia shared a glance with Huojin and he gave a slight nod.

"Meng Rin, can I ask you something else?"

"Yeah sure."

They walked into a corner of the hospital’s lobby and Jia asked, "Have you ever heard about a woman named Nuwa?"

Meng Rin slightly tipped her head to the side, trying to jog her memories.

"No. I have not heard that name."

"Then Yuming? Or Ruolan?"

She took a pause and shook her head. "Not them either. Who are they?"

"Nothing, nothing," she quickly said, "It’s just related to a case we are working on."

She was confused. "But why did you ask me if I would know?"

"Well..."

Huojin said, "The first woman, Nuwa, is somehow connected either with the Hou or Zhuo family."

"Huojin."

"It’s fine, Jia. Plus, I think Meng Rin would be able to help us. We don’t have anybody to get the inside news."

She sighed.

"Who is Nuwa?"

"A sex worker from Huayuan."

Her eyes widened. "Huh? O-oh..."

It took her by surprise for a moment as she tried to reel it in.

"B-But why would a sex worker be...involved with the Hou family?"

"It’s a long story but that’s what we have investigated so far. Since you have frequently visited the Hou mansion, we wondered if you would have ever heard that name, even in passing."

Meng Rin tried extra hard to remember this time. "No, I really haven’t heard that name..."

But I can find it out...she thought, feeling a small beam of hope light up.

"Rinrin?"

She froze.
