Chapter 340: Huayuan (10)

"Mingshen."

"Yes, Spicy."

"I cannot see anything. It’s too dark. Can we not switch on some light?"

A gasp echoed from their opposite end. "No! No! No lights please! I will die!"

"Are you allergic to light?"

"No."

"Then it shouldn’t be a problem."

"It will be because I will die."

Jia’s mouth twitched hard. "Why will you die?"

"I am very sensitive to light," Qin Ruwen said.

Jia could only see a vague outline of his figure as he leaned against a couch with his knees hugged to his chest.

First, it was Bai Yingtai who didn’t care about anything but sleeping and now she was introduced to this assistant who couldn’t bear to be under light.

Jia whispered. "Why do you always have such strange assistants?"

Mingshen pouted in the dark. "They are very useful if we ignore their eccentricities."

He couldn’t see her but Jia was staring at him judgmentally.

Yeah, well we shouldn’t talk about you and eccentric behavior in the same sentence...

Mingshen squinted his eyes in the dark. "How come you are here? I thought you never left the solace of your dark lab office. Color me surprised. First it was Bai Yingtai who I bumped into at the charity function, who only knows how to sleep like a panda and now you are here at Huayuan, who only knows to be a vampire."

"I am not a vampire, Boss," he sincerely defended himself.

"So then what are you? I never thought you were the type to be exploring a...red-light district," he smiled in the darkness. "Have you gotten tired of making new poison concoctions?"

"No. I still like making poisons. Even more - testing them on people. In the dark."

Jia’s jaw dropped, horrified.

What kind of people do you test them on!

"So are you making your new office in Huayuan?"

"No."

"Then why are you here?"

"I got an invitation to see the martial arts festival," Qin Ruwen replied.

Mingshen stared at his silhouette in a daze. "Excuse me? Do you even have any friends...? And that too from Huayuan to invite you for festivals?"

He looked away in the darkness, contemplating.

"I am not sure if she is my friend."

"Wait a second. When did you even go out of the lab anywhere to make friends?" He gasped.

Jia was amazed and appalled by the level and kind of shock Mingshen could receive from his assistants.

Making friends is normal for everybody except for Mingshen’s assistants...

"Huh..." Qin Ruwen entered into a stupor. "How long ago was that? Eight months? Nine months?"

Suddenly, the door opened and a streak of light crept in. But before Qin Ruwen could scream with horror, the door was promptly closed.

"Who is it?" Jia sat upright and alert.

The woman equally stood rooted at her spot, who held a candlestick that emitted a faint glow of flame. The light shone upon Yong’s face, who stared back at Jia and Mingshen, expressionless.

Jia reciprocated her gaze with a long and hard stare of her own, who couldn’t believe that the woman she was chasing after all this time just casually entered the room she was in by herself.

Qin Ruwen shied away from the glow of that fire. "Did you really have to bring a candle?"

It was now Mingshen’s turn to stare at him. "Is she the friend you were talking about?"

"Yes? Do you know her too?"

Silence.

Yong smiled. "Long time no see, Inspector Song."

"Does it really feel that long to you? I feel like we just met yesterday at the charity event," Jia smiled back. "I think we were playing a game of tag."

"Who won?"

"That evening? You, for sure. But I guess I finally won the longer version of the game."

She narrowed her eyes.

Mingshen asked, "Don’t tell me she is your girlfriend?"

"Who is a girlfriend? Can I test poison on them?" he enquired quietly.

Jia was jaw-dropped for the second time.

What is he...

Mingshen smacked him on his head.

For the third turn, Yong stared at Mingshen. "You know Qin Ruwen?"

He smiled. "He works for me. He is always cooped up in the dark lab but I guess he made an exception for you."

It seemed like the cogs in Yong’s brain rapidly joined the equation of two plus two.

Well fair enough. Not like Qin Ruwen knew about my identity at Huayuan anyway.

Jia said, "Now that we have finally met, how about you join us and we talk about some important stuff."

Yong arched her brow and eventually sat down, keeping the candlestick aside and preventing its light from reaching Qin Ruwen.

Mingshen raised his hand. "Sorry, Spicy. I know you have been waiting for this for a long time, but I cannot hold my curiosity!"

"..."

He narrowed his eyes at Yong. "How did you two meet? It’s impossible to drag him anywhere outside."

Yong frowned. "I didn’t drag him anywhere outside. We met at the karaoke where Aang and his gang tried to harass me."

Mingshen’s jaw dropped as he looked back at him. "You went to a karaoke with loud music and bright lights? Who the hell are you? You cannot be my assistant!"

Jia dryly said, "It seems like you are getting too many shocks today, Dr. Yang. Should I call an ambulance before you slip into a coma?"

It wasn’t visible but Qin Ruwen held a lifeless gaze.

"All because of Ren Xuanjie..."

Jia recalled that he was the wilderness medicine expert from Mingshen’s team.

"He forced all of us to party that evening...And then began my doom..."

*Flashback*

Bai Yingtai was sleeping on the couch in the karaoke room which they had booked. Bojing was tremblingly checking out the menu while Zhiyou was studying the karaoke room with a curious gaze. Ren Xuanjie was picking out which song to play.

He had forced the team to party at the karaoke club before he headed out on another trip to South America. The only people not onboard were Bai Yingtai and Qin Ruwen, who loved the comfort and space of their offices.

But he had dragged them out anyway.

Suddenly, Qin Ruwen’s voice whispered from beneath the couch where Bojing was sitting.

"Can somebody dim the lights please?"

Ren Xuanjie sneered. "You are gonna lie under the couch for the whole evening?"

"If the lights won’t be dimmed, then yes..."

"Man up and get out of there Qin Ruwen!" He glared.

"Ah, the darkness is calling me into its void...See you later."
