Chapter 339: Huayuan (9)
As Jia and Mingshen resumed their search for Yong, Jia’s gaze fell back towards the plaza where an arena was set for martial arts competition. They witnessed a lean and slightly muscular woman winning competitions back to back. Whether it were the people who lived in Huayuan or the customers who entered the ring, none could match her strength and spirit.
Jia arched her brows, impressed. The woman’s agility and moves were a sight to behold. She openly challenged.
"Come on in, anybody who wants to fight against me! I am all stoked~" her eyes twinkled with delight.
One man showed courage to enter the arena. He was trained in taekwondo and held decent skills.
"Ready to cough out your wallet after I win?" She laughed.
"We will see about that," he scoffed.
The match started with a wave of cheer echoing for both parties. But it soon became evident who had the upper hand. The muscular woman easily fended off his attacks while keeping her defense intact.
Jia was now sure that this woman knew to operate in all kinds of martial arts. If she had been with the police force or the army, she would have been a force to be reckoned with.
I would have loved to meet her if not for the case...
"But I would really like to know her name at least."
"She is Ah Kum hoho~"
Jia’s eyes slightly widened as she turned, coming face to face with the boutique owner again.
"You."
"We meet again hehe~"
"Haha yes," She looked back at the arena and asked, "You said she is Ah Kum?"
"Yes~ The leader of the Mei Hua house."
Mingshen raised his brow with interest. "Ah. The house that has the bold and physically strong courtesans."
"Yes~ Ah Kum always wins the competitions. She is the light and shine of the Mei Hua house."
"Interesting."
Suddenly, Mingshen caught a flicker of recognition from one of the buildings opposite him. His gaze travelled to observe the higher floors that were mostly engulfed in darkness. But a momentary peal of light was cast upon a man’s face.
Mingshen blinked, puzzled.
The boutique owner grinned. "No matter how many times I look at you, you only look more and more beautiful."
"Ah thank you..." Jia rubbed her chin, embarrassed. "May I ask your name?"
She lightly hiccuped in a stupor. "Si Yu."
Jia shone. "That’s a really pretty name."
She blushed. "Aish, you are such a sweet talker~"
Mingshen grabbed Jia’s wrist and said, "Let’s go up there."
Jia and Si Yu took a look at the same time in the direction where he was pointing at.
Si Yu giggled. "Oh my, oh my. You are quite the passionate one~ I guess your patience has hit the limit."
Jia’s mouth twitched.
Patience for what?
Jia asked, "Did you see Yong?"
"Nope. But I have a feeling I know the man I just saw a glimpse of."
"You found Bojing?"
"He wasn’t Bojing."
"Then who else would be up there?"
"That’s what we are about to find out. Miss. Si. See you later. And yes. You have a really pretty name," he smiled.
He rushed towards the building dragging Jia along with him.
Si Yu waved them goodbye with a dazy smile.
"I wonder why they are looking for my daughter *hic*..." she muttered.
—
Mingshen hurried up the stairs and reached the fourth floor where he had recognized the faint silhouette from the plaza below.
Jia followed right behind him. "Are you sure you saw someone familiar?"
"Yup."
"Why does it matter though? Huayuan is a big district. I don’t think it’s that rare to see a person or two you know. Plus, we really need to get going and find Yong."
Mingshen squinted his eyes in the darkness. "He wasn’t a simple acquaintance."
Jia glanced around and muttered. "This floor looks abandoned. I cannot even hear a sound coming from any of the rooms. Who will be there in such darkness?"
They kept walking along the corridor with the lights from the plaza faintly lighting up their path, just bare enough to make out their way and not bump into a wall.
As they walked farther, Mingshen caught a figure standing at a distance shrouded in pitch black darkness. The plaza’s light was too far to reach his side.
Jia craned her neck and whispered, "Is that him?"
"Let’s find out."
As they slowly made their way towards him, a flash of light from the plaza suddenly hit the place where he stood, casting a bright glow. It was only momentary and darkness fell back into the corridor.
But the reaction that man gave out was too extreme for Jia to digest. He gasped out loud, placing his hand on his chest as if he just encountered a ghost. Jia swore he would have fainted on the spot but somehow managed to stumble back into the room, covering his face with his hand and closing the door with a loud thud.
...What was that?
"You really think you know that man?" Jia couldn’t help but ask.
Mingshen sneered. "I am now sure I know that man."
"Huh? Who?"
He looked back and smirked. "Come with me."
They reached the room into which the man took shelter. Mingshen knocked on the door twice.
There wasn’t any response.
He knocked again with no response once again.
Mingshen sneered. He took out his phone and switched on his flashlight. Jia was puzzled about what he was about to do.
The door wasn’t locked so he gently nudged it open and held his phone inside with his flashlight on.
"Aaahhhhh!!!"
Jia jolted with the sudden scream.
"Switch off the lights! Switch off the lights! Do you want to kill me? Have some mercy on this mortal!"
Jia was left dumbfounded.
It’s just a flashlight...What is he talking about?
Mingshen switched it off and sneered. "Then better come out, Qin Ruwen, also known as the Dark Guardian of my lab."
A long silence fell on the other side.
"Is that you, Boss?"
