Chapter 323: Lifelong celibacy?
Mingshen’s stomach grumbled the moment he saw Jia laying down the dishes on the table. Dinner included a feast of lotus root and pork soup, shrimp fried rice and a combination of three to four side dishes, including braised mushrooms, chived mashed potatoes and hot and sour cabbage.
He grabbed a bite of the braised mushrooms and heavily nodded his head in appreciation.
"This ish goooood..."
"Hey! Don’t steal food!" Jia threw him a glare.
"Didn’t you cook for us to eat?"
"And there is an order for everything. Don’t just randomly dig into dishes."
She snorted and served the soup. "Have this first."
Mingshen shrugged. He wasn’t much bothered about the order as long as Jia’s food got into his stomach. The warm soup glided down his throat with such flavor as if hell never existed.
"Is this heaven?"
"It’s just soup."
Mingshen took another bite, albeit chewing this time slowly to relish the flavor to its fullest.
"This is really good," he made an O with his thumb and index finger to express his sincerest appreciation.
Jia’s ears perked up with the praise. "All thanks to Mrs. Zhang. She cooks simple but delicious dishes."
"I was free labour for her yesterday."
"Did you enjoy yourself?" She chuckled.
"I have some issues with that brat," he frowned.
"Is there a single person on this planet you don’t have issues with?"
"You!" Mingshen gleamed with vigor.
She was dumbfounded. "I should be the last person."
He grinned. "You are always first~"
Jia gave him a judgmental look as she served Mingshen and herself the fried rice. "I would really like to look at your brain one day."
Mingshen smirked with a sense of victory. "We can always explore each other’s body, Spicy. It will help us get closer. Super close."
"Do you realize how many women would swoon over that coming from you?"
"Are you one of them~?"
"Nope."
"..."
"Why!?" Mingshen expressed his grievance. He sniffled and took solace in the fried rice.
She took a portion of the braised mushrooms and said, "Well, it’s pointless for me. I don’t really plan on getting married."
The clink of the chopsticks distinctly pressed in the air as it fell from Mingshen’s hands. He stared at her, dumbfounded.
"Huh? You want to be a celibate for your entire life?"
Her brow twitched. "It’s not really about celibacy. I just feel that my work as a cop is extremely demanding. At times, I spend the entire nights in the bureau to work on the cases, the investigation work is exhausting and more importantly, very dangerous. I just feel I won’t be able to be a very good wife-"
"Preposterous!"
Jia almost choked on her food with the intensity of Mingshen’s roar. He banged his palms on the table and was about to flip up to stand in defiance, but the pain shooting up in his back reminded him about his sprain. He paused and quietly leaned back to avoid embarrassment.
"I cannot march towards you but know that I protest this with all my being!"
"Huh?" She looked speechless. "Why?"
"Your sense of reasoning is shallow," he glared. "Everybody knows how a cop’s life is. Doesn’t mean that they don’t get married. Police officers have a life of their own too!"
"I mean...of course I know that but maybe it just comes down to personal preferences?"
"What personal preferences do you have? Tell me."
"Why has this become such a heated topic of discussion for you?" Jia couldn’t understand.
"Because you are an idiot," he didn’t mince his words.
"..."
Jia said, "Well if I happen to marry a man who is outside the law enforcement, then it will simply be too difficult for him to adjust to my lifestyle. I understand the constant anxiety he would feel about my safety, my job, the criminals I deal with...I just don’t want to put a normal person through that."
"Then just marry an abnormal person."
"..."
Jia’s jaw dropped. "That is your solution?"
Mingshen scoffed. "You are Song Jia. To me, you are Spicy. You are just too good to marry an average man. I thought that was always assumed."
He then leaned closer and rested his chin on his palm with a sheepish grin. "Instead of worrying about inconveniencing a normal man, shouldn’t you be looking for somebody who understands your line of work?"
Jia tilted her head.
"Who has closely worked with you?" His voice grew more excited.
She blinked.
"Who understands your duty and responsibilities and would provide his shoulder for you to cry on during difficult times?"
"I see."
"I mean, who would understand you more than a man who walks on the frontlines with you and through all thick and thin~?"
"You make a good point."
He beamed. "I always make valid points."
"Isn’t Huojin the perfect choice then?"
"..."
Mingshen threw her another aggrieved look. "How did you come to that conclusion!?"
Jia furrowed her brows. "Who else would you be pointing to? He is a police officer like me so he understands my line of work and is always at the frontlines with me. We have closely worked together for many years now and his shoulder is the perfect place to cry on. Isn’t he the perfect choice then?"
"No, he isn’t! He is just an ok ok average man. He doesn’t pass the criteria of being even close to as handsome as me, forget about matching it!"
"Okay first of all, Huojin is a good-looking man. You have no idea how many women in my department have a crush on him. Second of all, beauty is not a criteria for me anyway..."
"It is for me and I don’t accept him!"
Why does he sound like that typical mother-in-law?
Suddenly, Mingshen felt a crisis.
How can Spicy not see me!? Am I not sitting right in front of her?
I think Spicy has been a virgin for too long...
After dinner, Jia dragged Mingshen back to the bedroom and forced him to lie down. She took an extra set of pillows and a blanket from the cupboard.
Mingshen was still sour from the earlier conversation, yet he asked, "Where are you going?"
"I will read for sometime and then go to sleep."
"Where?"
"In the living room’s couch."
"This bed is big enough," he innocently blinked.
She smiled. "I wouldn’t want to inconvenience a patient with a sprained back."
"But why on the couch? This is a two bedroom house-"
Mingshen cursed himself.
Fuck!
Jia slowly said, "Mom and Dad’s room is a little dusty. I don’t get the time to clean it..." she quickly smiled it off. "It’s not a big deal anyway. I have slept in worse places for some cases. The couch is still very comfortable. Text me if you need something. Good night."
