Chapter 312: Puppet and its puppeteer

"Huayuan..." he softly whispered that name. "Things always become a little difficult when it is involved. The new leader has made it even harder."

Jia nodded helplessly. "Their autonomy is a big challenge for my case because Yong might know a lot of secrets."

"Indeed," he smiled with a hint of mystery. "They have always been enigmatic in that sense. The cooperation contract is keeping the Bureau on its toes, is it not?"

"Yes."

He glanced at Mingshen. "It’s the same story with the Underworld."

Mingshen didn’t bother with a response.

Jia slid her phone in front of him and asked, "Do you remember if it was her?"

Zhuo Syaoran took a closer look, tilting his head as he stared at Yong’s picture with scrutiny. Instead of giving his answer, his black eyes watched Jia intently.

"How will my statement help Inspector Song?"

"My Commissioner will finally have to accept Huayuan’s link with everything and he will lift my restrictions to investigate Yong," she earnestly said.

He stared at her, his gaze steady and probing. "You place quite faith in your system."

Jia blinked in slight puzzlement.

"Of course. I am a cop after all. I have faith in the law."

A smile played on his face like a riddle. "You are having tea in the Zhuo family mansion - one of the many families involved in the law-making process of this country."

The National People’s Congress was indeed the most esteemed and powerful body in China that looked after the Constitution.

"You have faith in the law, you say. But do you hold the same faith for those who wield its power?"

"...I don’t understand what you mean Mr. Zhuo."

The tip of his cup quietly kissed his lips. He smelled the fragrant chamomile flowers.

"Law doesn’t hold the real power, Inspector Song. It’s the people who make them."

A shadow of a smile tugged at his lips. "Puppets never have any will of their own."

A chilly wind made Jia shudder a bit with an ominous sense of doom spreading in her chest.

How...can he compare law to a puppet?

"Just advising you caution, Inspector Song. I admire you. You are a bright officer. I don’t want to see you hurt."

Mingshen’s ice-cold and threatening gaze landed on Zhuo Syaoran, which the latter clearly felt its pointed jabs aimed at him.

"Oops. I think the last part irked someone. Rest assured, Dr. Yang. I won’t come in your way," he smiled twinklingly.

"I will keep that in mind. I always tread cautiously."

He simply smiled at her without a response.

"Do you recognize her?" Jia tapped on Yong’s picture again, hoping for the best outcome.

Zhuo Syaoran took another look and gave a nod.

Jia’s gaze brightened as if his answer broke the dark clouds of despair shrouding over her forever like a ray of sunshine.

"Are you sure it was this woman? You can take your time."

"I don’t have to take more time. I am sure. Yes, it was this woman I saw when her mask fell."

Jia felt as if a heavy burden was lifted off her chest.

I can finally convince Commissioner Zhong now, right?

She bowed. "Thank you so much, Mr. Zhuo. You don’t know how much you have helped me! Will you be able to give your official statement at the Bureau too?"

"Ah. That might be a little difficult for me. It is hard for me to step out in my sickly condition," his gaze expressed lament.

"Oh, that won’t be a problem. I sincerely apologize. I got too excited and forgot about your health," she bit her lip in embarrassment.

Idiot Jia!

"I will bring some other officers with me at your place here to record your official statement."

Zhuo Syaoran’s black pupils expressed their relief. "That would be wonderful. I apologize for the extra trip."

"It’s not a problem at all, Mr. Zhuo."

Jia was inwardly squealing inside.

Finally! Something is going on track!

Zhuo Syaoran then asked, "What will you do after the lift of restrictions? Huayuan still won’t cooperate. Not with one of their own in the fire. The leader is very protective of their tribe I heard."

That was the next big question in front of Jia. She scratched her chin, releasing a sigh.

"I am yet to figure that out...But I will definitely find a solution."

"I hope so. The solution is quite closer to you than you think."

"Sorry?" She blinked.

He smiled. "I believe no person in this world is impossible to please, whether a leader or not."

Mingshen cut him short with a cold smile. "I believe we are done here."

He turned towards Jia and chirped. "I am starving Spicy! How can a mere tea fill my belly?"

Jia threw him a silent glare in disbelief.

That was rude!

"Ah. Indeed, I lacked there. I apologize that I couldn’t offer food."

"No, no," her eyes widened. "There is no need for an apology, Mr. Zhuo. We only came here to talk to you, not have a feast," she fumed, saying the last part while eyeing Mingshen with a killing glare.

"I really appreciate the tea. It was very delicious," she smiled cheerfully.

They stood up to leave.

"Thank you for your time, Mr. Zhuo."

"My pleasure, Inspector Song."

His gaze fell upon Mingshen and he slowly asked, "How is Dr. Yang’s family?"

Mingshen hadn’t expected that question from him, but it made his expression turn from bad to worse.

"What do you think?"

He was silent for a long moment.

"It has been quite some time since I met Mr. and Mrs. Yang."

"How about we keep it that way?" Mingshen smiled frostily.

He said nothing.

Jia swallowed a gulp with the air of a bubbling confrontation taking root. She quickly grabbed Mingshen’s arm and pulled him away two steps back.

"I am sorry. Mingshen is in a bad mood today."

He smiled lightly. "Unfortunately, it’s always bad when I am in the vicinity. But...I really hope for otherwise. I would like to meet the spirited Dr. Yang Mingshen like he is to everybody else."

Mingshen stared at him acutely.

"I must say...your dreams are as paralyzed as your body, Mr. Zhuo."
