Chapter 264: In the guise of bubbliness

Meng Rin took a bite of her ice cream from her cup, staring at her co-actor and colleague Bai Caishen.

His brother...

She dazedly thought about Bai Yingtai.

They are so different.

She wondered if she should tell him about her appointments with Bai Yingtai for her sleep problems. But...

"Rinrin, why are you together with Hou Tengqi?"

Chow Mey cut to the chase without wasting any time. Her sharp eyes scrutinized her.

"It’s evident that his family doesn’t like you. Especially that mother. I hated her vibes. I must say she should also get into the acting line. Masking her dissatisfaction behind her harmless smile - seems like she is an expert."

She stiffened. "No, no, Meymey! Tengqi’s family likes me. But you know about what happened with him...everybody is stressed..."

Dong Haoyu said after a moment, "I agree with Meymey. You...don’t look happy, Rinrin. You don’t look happy in this relationship. Even when he came to visit you in Tianjin, you looked more terrified than pleasantly surprised."

Cold sweat broke on her forehead. "It wasn’t like that. With Director Wan’s death and all, it was just too stressful."

Meng Rin tried her best to reassure her group but nobody was falling for her seemingly strong act.

Bai Caishen frowned and pinched her cheek. "You are my junior Rinrin. Who do you think gave you acting classes?"

"Hurtshhhh..." she said a little tearfully.

"Then tell me what exactly happened last night. How did the entire situation occur in the first place?"

Meng Rin’s heart dropped at that question. How could she reveal Hou Tengqi’s fury and violence? Chow Mey would try to eat the family alive if she learned it and she was worried about her.

Hou Tengqi didn’t come from an ordinary family that could be taken down. Hou Huan would never allow for that. She would instead deal with her friends and end every door of happiness for them. The thought alone gave her the shivers. There was no way Meng Rin wanted to involve her friends in her problem and destroy their life and career.

Meymey has already gone through so much...

She shook her head. "There was just some misunderstanding between the stranger and Tengqi and th-things got heated..."

Chow Mey glanced at Dong Haoyu, who looked a little helpless himself. Meng Rin wasn’t being honest.

"So you are saying that Mr. Hou really keeps you happy?"

"Yes!" She beamed, her eyes sparkling.

Or at least, she tried to express that gleam with all her strength. Only she knew that her soul inside shivered.

Chow Mey’s equation with Bai Caishen was still at rocky terms so she coughed and excused herself with Dong Haoyu with whom she wanted to privately talk. It was exactly what Bai Caishen wanted too. A little privacy with Meng Rin.

She felt his intent gaze as if he was figuring something out and every passing by quiet moment pricked her more and more.

"You were always so cheerful and bubbly whenever you asked me to be your boyfriend."

She coughed. "That was just me fooling around hehe~"

Bai Caishen stared at her. "I now wonder if it was really fooling around? Rinrin, tell me honestly. Were you always asking me out because...you didn’t want Hou Tengqi to ask you out?"

She froze.

"I keep thinking that if I had agreed to be your boyfriend, then you would be committed to me. Same from my side. So that would automatically close the door for Hou Tengqi to approach you, right? It wouldn’t look good for a man of his reputation and stature to chase after a committed woman. Did he lack women? No. I will go one step ahead and say that it would actually be humiliating for him."

Meng Rin locked her hands together as anxiety swelled in her chest.

"So you wanted a boyfriend because you didn’t want Hou Tengqi to be your boyfriend. It’s for the same reason you sometimes had asked out Haoyu too, right? But he already liked Chow Mey.

Nobody took you seriously because you pretended not to be. But...since we all met him at Tianjin, I couldn’t help but feel if it wasn’t fooling around but your desperate attempts to escape from him."

"Haha, t-that’s too long of a jump in your assumptions, Caicai. Of course it wasn’t like that."

"Is it now really?" His eyes narrowed. "Because right now, you are not doing a very great job at acting."

She swallowed a nervous gulp.

"And I am even surer because I..." he cleared his throat, "know my brother. I was shocked to learn that he put Hou Tengqi in that state. I was shocked because my brother never starts any fight. He doesn’t like getting into trouble. But if the other person keeps pushing his buttons, then he doesn’t spare them either.

So once again I wondered. Did he really bang Hou Tengqi’s head only because he kicked the bed? Yes, that would make him very, very displeased for sure but not enough to make him land in an almost comatose state. Something more happened other than the violence towards the bed."

Meng Rin shivered. She still remembered Bai Yingtai’s eyes filled with a cold glint of iciness.

"What other reason...could there be? H-He really seemed possessive of the bed..."

"Rinrin."

His extremely serious expression made her sit straight.

"Did Hou Tengqi try to hit you?"

It was hard for her to gather her emotions but she was still quick to deny his claims. "No, no! What are you talking about? Tengqi would n-never even think of doing that...! He loves me a lot," she nodded hard.

"But I never once heard from you that you love him a lot too."

It was like she forgot to breathe.

Bai Caishen took her hand in his and gently pressed it in between his large, firm and assuring hands.

"Rinrin," he looked straight in her eyes. "Break up with Hou Tengqi. That abuser should be in jail, not in a relationship with you. Or any woman for that matter. He and his whole family are toxic and we three have seen enough. You cannot fool us. Please. You are my dear friend and I won’t tolerate anybody hurting you."

She breathed hard. "I-It’s really not like-"

"My brother was able to save you this time. But what about next time? A crazy and possessive man like him could go to any lengths, including hurting you to keep you by his side. If you don’t take control of the situation right now, then it could be too late. Just get yourself out of this messy family. And Chow Mey, Haoyu and I are there with you. You are not alone, okay?"

Meng Rin’s eyes ached. Tears rolled down her cheeks before she knew it and she jumped into Bai Caishen’s hug. "...Mhm..."
