Chapter 263: Huayuan

Chapter 263: Huayuan

On the other side, Jia faced the entrance of China’s most popular red light district, Huayuan. While Mingshen was dealing with his own agenda of getting Bai Yingtai out and Meng Rin was grappling with the shock of Bai Caishen’s relationship with Bai Yingtai, Jia had another mission to take care of.

Huayuan.

Also called the ’Garden of Desire’ stood like a secret paradise hidden among the bustling city of Beijing. The interior buildings Jia saw with curved roofs held an elegant blend of nature and beauty. Vines of jasmine twirled up its whitewashed walls and large red lanterns hanging from the eaves.

A carved wooden gate led into a wide courtyard bursting with vibrant flowers - azalea, peonies, chrysanthemums, and orchids, all blooming in carefully arranged pots, as if it were more a lavish garden than a house of pleasure.

Jia was left awestruck by its beauty. She was still only at the entrance and yet the beauty of the buildings and alleys inside took her breath away. She could only imagine how prettier it would look on the inside.

She could see some small shops where men and women both alike happily worked like it was just another day. From her right side, the sound of a zither playing in the background created an almost ethereal atmosphere. The entire flower themed design made Jia feel as if she could live here for eternity.

"Who are you?"

Her stupor broke with a sharp, disgruntled voice snapping her out of her daze. A woman, seemingly in her thirties, eyed Jia with scrutiny with a blatant distaste.

Before Jia could introduce herself, the woman cut her off with another unforgiving question. "Forget who you are. Why are you here?"

"I want to ask about Yong."

The woman cocked her brow with interest. Jia wasn’t sure what to take from that reaction but she continued. "I heard that she might be here and it’s very important for me to meet her-"

"Important for you or somebody else?"

"Sorry?"

"Don’t act ignorant, Miss. Cop. You think you can just pop up here and expect to gain an entry?"

She pressed her lips. She was well aware of Huayuan’s autonomy. Neither the police nor the underworld had any rights to invade Huayuan’s privacy according to the terms and conditions it set with both the parties.

Jia urged. "It’s very important. It’s related to a case-"

The woman smiled. "Everything is related to a case for you people. Want to know a rich brat’s secret? Come to Huayuan because he might have slept with a woman here who knows the juicy details. Want to expose a cheating husband? Come to Huayuan to hang the sex worker he slept with upside down instead of doing that to her husband. You all cops think you are carriers of justice but we know the truth so spare me the bullshit."

Jia’s eyes widened. "No, I didn’t come here to trouble anybody. I just want to meet Yong. She is involved in something dangerous and she is the only person who could help me reach the cult leader! The cult has-"

"Enough," her eyes went cold. "I think you are new to your job, Miss. We don’t allow officers to roam in Huayuan. That has been our leader’s law."

By that point, everybody’s attention was at Jia and seeing a uniformed officer made their eyes go wide in shock. It was clear to Jia that it had been a long, long time since a police officer would have stepped in this place. The disdain, the anger and the pure bitterness in everybody’s expressions told Jia how they loathed the cops.

"Please...please tell me how I can meet her. You don’t know how the cult-"

"And you don’t know just how many times you cops have shown your disgusting faces here coming up with the same pathetic reasons. Everything is in danger. The whole world is burning, but do I care? Nope. We are all just easy scapegoats for you and history has not proved otherwise. So save your code of justice for somebody else and get out. You are not getting an entry here."

The woman icily turned her back and walked away. Jia tried to stop her but two men blocked her way with frigid gazes. "Leave. Don’t force us to do otherwise."

Jia stared at them but neither of them budged or backed out. She inhaled a breath and let it go. There was no point in antagonizing them when they were already antagonized by her. She turned around, defeated and almost bumped into a woman.

"I am so sorry!" Jia apologized.

The middle-aged woman was slightly rattled but she held to her poise. Jia blinked at the elderly lady who emanated an inexplicable grace and elegance with the way she carried herself. She held a wooden fan that partially covered her face from nose down. Her keen eyes stared at Jia with interest and a mix of curiosity.

"A cop..." she whispered. "After a long time."

"I am sorry..." Jia apologized again.

"You are not getting entry just because you will act kind," one of the men scorned.

Jia frowned. "It’s basic decency. There doesn’t have to be a hidden agenda in everything."

"For the cops? Yes, you do. You only know how to hide your ugly faces in a mask."

Jia had heard about Huayuan’s disdain with the police but she clearly felt it today.

The elderly woman with the wooden fan watched Jia go and she turned to look at the men. "What was a cop doing here after so long?"

"I heard she came looking for Miss. Yong."

She raised her brow. "I see. I suppose she didn’t get that far."

They scoffed. "No way we will let those bratty cops ever step foot here again! The leader’s words are irrefutable. No cops ever again!"

Jia released a troubled sigh as she got into her car. She stared ahead, thinking of the next course of action.

What to do now?

She revved up the engine and the car sped away. As it did, a little girl walking along the road side turned her head with a lollypop in her mouth.

"Was that the cool cop sis who saved me?" Danya blinked twice.
