Chapter 253: Sleepless night

Jia banged the door of her house shut and let go of her clutch on the couch. Ditching the heels, she started to pace around the living room while her fingers massaged her temple.

The conversation with Mrs. Lai kept hammering into her mind and the resulting mistakes she made.

I was so careless tonight!

She thought in retrospect and figured that she wouldn’t have screwed up so badly.

"I lost my calm when she was talking..."

Jia knew that she could have handled the situation better and prevented the chaos from happening that led to the escape of the leader.

She sat down on the couch, mulling over what she could have done right but feeling restless, she started walking back and forth again.

Mingshen had to remind me to warn Huojin about the escaping members...I wouldn’t have been so careless before.

"I got so panicked that I forgot all about Mingshen and left him alone to deal with the leader. I forgot about the leader himself in the first place!"

She gritted her teeth, frustrated at her own lack of direction. She took a few deep breaths to calm down but her failure at the back of her mind continued to persist.

"It was a golden chance to catch the whole cult in a swoop but I failed...Why did Aunt Lai have to be a part of the cult too!? If she hadn’t been there then...Whatever she says doesn’t matter anyway! Then why the hell am I so hung up on her?"

Jia tiredly walked back to her room and changed to her night pajamas. She laid back on the bed and closed her eyes.

All is not lost. Yes, all is not lost...

The grumbling sound of her stomach woke Jia up from her light sleep. She placed her hand on her stomach, feeling extremely hungry. She glanced at the time and it was three-fifteen in the morning. She clicked her tongue in displeasure. She tried to sleep off her hunger but it evaded. She then remembered that she never really got the time to eat dinner with tonight’s mission.

"Ugh..."

Letting out an annoyed grunt, she sat on the bed. She had no energy to cook at this hour so she simply grabbed her mobile. She placed an online order and went back to sleep.

Thirty minutes later, Jia’s pizza arrived. Still moping by the thought of her failed mission, Jia went back inside and ate the first slice.

"Umm, delicious! Cheese is so amazing."

She felt the tension lift off her shoulders. She quickly finished off her pizza but still didn’t feel so satiated. Jia bit her lip and with a guilty expression, ordered a cheeseburger this time.

Only because tonight was so exhausting, she cleared her throat.

Jia stretched her arms and thought to find more about Survival Grounds, the game which brought Mrs. Lai to the cult gathering in the first place.

Time to get to work I guess...

"Sis Jia!" Ehuang happily hugged Jia, who came to visit her.

Jia was now at Mingshen’s lab after she decided this morning that she should check up on Ehuang once. She held another agenda of meeting Shilin too.

Jia smiled. "You look great, Ehuang."

She nodded. "Everybody here in the lab takes great care of me. They are so funny, especially Dr. Yang."

Her brow twitched. "I see. That’s good to hear."

Ehuang asked, "How are you sis? You look really tired. I can even see bags under your eyes."

Jia gave an awkward smile. It was a fact that even after eating to her heart’s content last night, she couldn’t get any decent sleep.

"Well last night was quite stressful. But I will be fine in no time. Your health is the most important. How have things been after the surgery?"

Ehuang nodded. "I am recovering. The weakness is almost gone."

"That’s great," she beamed.

"B-But..."

"What’s wrong?"

"What about Mom and Dad?" Ehuang looked troubled. "I haven’t seen them since the night I was brought here. Do-don’t they want to see me again...?"

"It’s not like that, Ehuang. With your parents’ involvement with the corrupt doctor and the illegal surgeries..." Jia let out a sigh, "it will be a little complicated. But don’t worry, Ehuang. Mingshen, his family and I, everybody here is to support you," she patted her head.

"How about me! How about me! I want Spicy’s support too!" A zealous voice erupted from the end of the corridor and a figure zoomed through the distance with lightning speed.

"Spicyyyyyyyyyy, am I dreaming right now? You came here on your own!" Mingshen gasped. "This is a miracle!"

"You are not the only one who works here thankfully," she smiled sarcastically.

Mingshen was quick to notice the same observation as Ehuang. "You didn’t sleep last night."

Jia stiffened. "You were there with me last night. You know how hectic it was."

"I still slept like a baby though."

"Despite the fact that your employee is arrested right now?"

He waved his hand in dismissal. "I will figure something out~"

"You are seriously saying that in front of a cop?"

"We always have our unspeakable secrets, Spicy," he blushed.

He looked at Ehuang and asked, "All good?"

"Just a numbing kind of a pain in my thigh. But otherwise, I feel okay."

"How about sleep?"

"It’s good."

"Patients shouldn’t lie to doctors. Don’t learn bad stuff from Spicy."

Jia frowned.

Ehuang pursed her lips. "I just...cannot help but think about Mom and Dad."

"My mom doesn’t feed you enough lasagna?" Mingshen was flabbergasted.

Ehuang burst into laughter. "She feeds me more than enough. It’s just..."

"Stress is causing your sleep problems. I will write down some pills for you. You will be fine. You better start thinking about your sexy bed life with your boyfriend rather than your unsexy parents."

Ehuang choked and blushed hard. "W-we are not going to...! N-Not so soon!"

Mingshen arched his brow. "Such responsible teens. My mother must be crying tears of joy. She wanted a child like you. She got me."

"..."

He noticed Jia’s intent gaze and he blinked. "You are so passionately staring at me, Spicy. What are you plotting?"
