Chapter 237: The She Gathering Arc (7)

Outside, Huojin was stationed with Xiyang and a few other officers. Jia and Mingshen were infiltrating the cult from the inside while their role was to make sure that once they got the signal from Jia, they would start a lockdown to keep the cult members inside the hotel and not let anybody escape. At present, they were at a different floor than the floor where the charity function was going.

"All set," Huojin said, "Jia and Mingshen are entering the cult hall."

Xiyang gulped. "Will they be alright?"

"Are you afraid they will get brainwashed?"

"No way. Mam Jia would never be brainwashed by such ridiculous stuff. And Dr. Yang...well," he coughed, "he is already a devil himself. It would make sense for him to brainwash and torture people, not the other way around."

The day was still fresh in his mind when Mingshen had charged him money for babysitting Yun during Dahua movie th’s case.

My precious money, he sobbed.

Huojin smiled. "Then why are you worried?"

"Haven’t you seen dramas with cult plots? They are so scary and the people act like maniacs. Sometimes they do a sacrificial ritual too!"

He rolled his eyes. "Relax. I don’t think there will be any sacrificial ritual here. Even if there might be, Jia will stop it anyway. I don’t care about what they actually do in these gatherings or whatever you call them."

His eyes narrowed dangerously. "My fingers are just itching to nab the culprits behind this farce. So let’s get to it. Let’s make tonight the last night for this cult to ever exist."

Beiye entered the hall with a half smile. Two men stood at the entrance, greeting her. She knew the drill and didn’t need to be told. She turner and lifted her free flowing hair from the back of her neck, revealing the hidden tattoo.

The men took a good look at it, glanced at each other and nodded. They let her in.

A few steps inside and she heard more people entering from a distance. She half-turned to find a couple dressed in blood red just reaching the entrance. They did the same thing as she had just a few moments ago.

The husband and the wife showed their tattoos and the men nodded again.

Beiye slightly tilted her head.

She was the same woman who bumped into Miss. Xie, right...?

From the corner of her eye, Beiye felt she caught another familiar figure and she turned her head. It was a glimpse of another woman, probably of her age but she had already disappeared into the darkness before she got the chance to get a clear look.

Beiye frowned.

Was I just imagining it?

Behind the curtains, Yong took out her mask for a second and softly exhaled, feeling sweaty with the mask put on. She tilted her head, trying to place the feeling she felt a minute ago.

Somebody was looking at me. Looking? Or scrutinizing?

She shrugged it off.

It doesn’t matter. Whoever he or she was, wouldn’t recognize me again anyway, she smiled to herself as shed her dress in the darkness.

Jia looked around the Clover hall.

The room was cloaked in darkness, the only light coming from dim yellow lamps. They cast long, ominous shadows on the walls. Heavy, dark curtains covered the windows that created a suffocating sense of isolation. There was a small podium at the far end with chairs placed in several rows facing it. Some people were already seated, whispering in hushed voices.

Jia and Mingshen chose the very last row. She carefully gauged the people and in the second row recognized a woman. The back of her dress was the same as the woman Jia mistook as Mrs. Lai. Her heart stopped for a second.

Don’t make the same mistakes your parents made.

Mingshen caught her slightly disturbed and asked, "What’s wrong?"

"Nothing," she quickly shrugged it off but Mingshen wasn’t really satisfied with the answer.

"This is quite the horror house setup. Oh that reminds me of the amusement park~" he chuckled deviously. "That was interesting."

"What was?"

He innocently blinked. "Us being trapped in the ghostly room. You even passionately fell on me~"

Jia flashed him a dry smile. She felt a chilly sensation at the back of her neck and she quickly turned. But apart from a man passing by the last row, she didn’t notice anything else.

Strange...

It felt like...that man was listening to our conversation.

She leaned towards Mingshen. "We should be careful."

"Careful is boring," he yawned.

"Don’t you dare jeopardize anything," her glare was more than visible.

At a distance, Jia saw a pair coming and her eyes widened. "Mingshen, look," she whispered.

Mingshen glanced at the pointed side and saw a pair of a man and a young boy coming in. He blinked and a moment later, raised his brow with interest.

"That brat who was hitting on you and the bratty father. Huh...Why do I feel that it makes perfect sense for them to be here?"

Jia made a face.

"Think about it. This cult seems to be related to women in some way and considering how he was treating you..." he shrugged.

Jia’s expression contorted with rage. "I cannot believe a father could bring his son to this type of nonsense. Instead of playing sports in school, he is making him come here among a bunch of criminals manipulating people’s minds? No wonder he was so aggressive. This cult is getting into his mind!"

Jia could hardly stop her fists from trembling. She thought about Ehuang whose parents committed such atrocities against her and now this teen boy, who was also beginning to walk in the same toxic, messed up path.

"We need to stop this. This influence...is getting way out of hand."

When everybody settled in, the curtains were raised and a man stood at the center of the podium. He was dressed in an elegant business suit with a dark blue mask covering his face.

"Welcome everyone. As always, it has been such a pleasure to meet you all again. So without further ado, let’s begin."
