The Devil Doctor's Spicy Love
Chapter 229: Anguish

Chapter 229: Anguish

As Mingshen returned from the jewelry shop, he looked around for Jia and found her munching on a sandwich in the food court. He reached the table and arched his brow with interest.

"This is a lot of cheese. Another cheese sandwich and a cheese pizza?"

Jia wiped the corner of her lips with a tissue and gave him a disgruntled look. "I am hungry."

"Oh my, is it only me who sees other food outlets as well for healthier options or am I just hallucinating?" He sarcastically smiled.

"...I do eat healthy food," she frowned.

"Right now? Not really."

"I am not on a diet and sometimes it’s fine to eat unhealthy food."

Mingshen took a chair and said, "There is a lot of cheese in your home’s refrigerator too. So is it unhealthy sometimes or everyday?" He smiled.

Jia made a face.

Mingshen grabbed the pizza plate and ordered a bowl of salad. "Balance is the key."

"Give me back my pizza!" Jia tried to snatch the plate but he didn’t let her.

"Be happy that I am not taking away that second sandwich."

She glared. "Well if balance is the key then the dress and jewelry is enough right? I don’t need shoes and purse."

He chuckled. "Unlike junk food, luxury isn’t harmful for your body. I need my future heart donor in perfect health."

The bowl of salad arrived and she pressed her lips in dissatisfaction. The pizza felt more tempting.

She murmured. "I should have waited after the shopping was over..."

Jia collapsed on her couch as the treacherous shopping time was finally done and dusted with. Four bags were neatly placed on the small table before her - the dress, the jewelry, the shoes and the purse.

She wiped her forehead that formed beads of sweat.

Am I going to be robbed tomorrow night?

Tired of all the mental rollercoaster today, Jia dragged her feet towards her refrigerator for some water. She grabbed a bottle and her gaze fell on a packet of cheese cubes.

Jia stared at it for a moment and closed the door, scoffing.

"Does he think that I only eat unhealthy food? He is wrong! I am a cop. Of course, I know how to take care of my health."

Two minutes later, she was back at the fridge’s side, popping two cheese cubes into her mouth one by one.

"It’s only because he snatched the pizza..." she guiltily looked away. "But I also exercise and burn away all the excess fat."

Jia laid down on the couch and closed her eyes.

She...

Tomorrow, we need to get to the root of all this. We have to stop this cult...as soon as possible...

Feeling drowsy, Jia closed her heavy eyelids.

Their deaths were very mysterious but it was a clear fact that they had somehow betrayed the law. Now, you cannot walk on the same path as them, okay? They always spoke of justice but what did they do in the end?

Her chest heaved with breathlessness.

It must have been so hard for you. Having parents like them must feel so disgraceful. Are you judged by your fellow officers too?

"No..." Jia mumbled in her sleep.

I mean of course everybody in your police department would know about your parents and the history, right?

Her lips quivered slightly and she shifted restlessly.

Of course they would be good to you, but only on the outside. Who would actually trust an officer whose parents already betrayed them once?

"E-everybody does trust me..."

Don’t repeat the mistakes that your parents made.

"I don’t...I...am a good officer..."

Don’t repeat the mistakes that your parents made.

"I-I told I don’t..."

Don’t repeat the mistakes that your parents made.

Jia covered her ears, shutting hard her already closed eyes. "I already said I won’t make any mistakes! Leave me alone!"

They always spoke of justice but what did they do in the end?

She jolted up with a gasp, panting heavily. She immediately clung onto her arms for some warmth as a chill spread in her body. She touched her forehead but didn’t feel any fever. She stared down at the floor in a daze and realized that it was all a dream.

"...I am a good officer..."

Her eyes felt numb and blurry. Tears slid down her cheeks as she sobbed in silence. She got up a few minutes later and walked with heavy steps. Her body felt lethargic and she clutched her temple that ached with a dull pain.

She opened a drawer and saw a piece of paper with creases throughout the page. She pressed her lips in a deep thought but eventually, she picked it up and folded it neatly, keeping it in her jeans pocket.

Jia stepped out of her house once again, this time in a pharmacy shop three blocks away. The pharmacist greeted her. "Yes, how may I help you?"

Jia hesitated for a moment but slowly took out the piece of paper from her pocket. "C-Can I get this...?"

The pharmacist took a look and said, "I am sorry Mam but this prescription is really crumpled and even torn at the sides."

"Y-yeah actually it happened by accident..."

She apologized. "I understand but I would need a fresh prescription from you. We cannot really accept this one. Plus, it’s also four months old and for these types of medicines, we always need the latest prescription."

Jia stiffened. "I...don’t have..."

"No, I mean you can ask your doctor to issue you a fresh one."

She slightly gulped. "You cannot...really accept this one?"

She shook her head. "It’s against the rules to give medicines on old or torn prescriptions."

"I see...Th-thank you."

"No problem, Mam. Please come again when you get the new prescription," she smiled.

Jia quietly left the store and on the way, tried her luck at two more pharmacy stores but with the same result. She stopped at a curb and breathed hard. She took out her phone and hovered her finger over Mingshen’s number for a long while.

Her thumb trembled against the phone’s light and she quickly locked back her phone.

"I am fine. I...probably got too emotional. I will be fine by tomorrow. Yes, I will be fine..." she turned and walked away, mumbling the assurance all way long.
