Chapter 228: The devil’s way of gratitude (2)
"*Ahem*"
Mingshen turned and saw Jia clear her throat as she came to return his phone. "I talked to Huojin."
He snatched it back from her and sneered. "Do you feel more enlightened now?"
Jia awkwardly scratched her head and said, "I am sorry I couldn’t understand you."
He scoffed.
"But in my defense, you gave too few clues."
"It’s your job to decode."
"Decoding isn’t necessary for a thank you," she smiled. "Thank you for keeping my badge with you. Now I finally understand your intentions for shopping with me."
Mingshen looked away, apparently still dissatisfied that the cat was out of the bag.
Jia raised her brow. "Are you being shy?"
He looked at her in horror. "Spicy, the leap in that thinking worries me. Are you doing drugs? What is wrong with you? Are you having a fever?"
"If you weren’t shy, then you wouldn’t have called Huojin to explain it to me," she chuckled. "So the great Yang Mingshen can get awkward too. What a sight to see. I am so glad to be alive."
"On. Towards. The. Shoes," he spoke through gritted teeth.
"Oh my God you are really shy. Are you serious? Have you never said thank you to anybody?" Jia was flabbergasted. "Not even once?"
He smirked with pride. "I am always the recipient."
"Well at least to Uncle and Aunt?"
"Why do they need my thanks?" He frowned.
"..."
She smiled. "For a lot of things actually...So am I really the first person you are expressing your gratitude for?"
"You talk too much," he gave a dry smile.
Jia looked away in a daze. In Mingshen’s almost thirty long years, she was the first person to get this sentiment of his.
Jia faced him and earnestly said, "I know what I did means a lot to you. But trust me, Mingshen. It’s nothing compared to what you did for Ehuang. On the contrary, I cannot thank you enough."
She averted her gaze, slightly looking tense.
Mingshen stared at her for a long moment and slowly took a step closer. He observed her fingers nervously twiddling among themselves. At first, he moved his hand and then stopped. But he moved again and his fingers touched hers, untangling them. She looked down, surprised.
"You are not a coward."
Jia stared ahead.
"Sure, your loyalty to law makes you stubborn at times. But that does not equate to cowardice."
His gaze traveled up from her fingers to her eyes. "Taking the risk was my way of protecting her. Not wanting to take the risk was your way. It’s not wrong to choose the lesser of the two evils. But did you choose your answer only because of your concern for her safety? Or does something else in your heart make you decide?"
He felt her hands softly shivering in his. But she quickly looked up with a jolly gaze. "There is nothing else, Mingshen. I know I am too careful. It’s just the way I am wired I guess, haha."
He said nothing to that.
She cleared her throat. "I appreciate your sentiments. That’s why you are spending on me to let me know about it, but a thank you need not be so expensive. Returning my badge was more than enough. Really. It means a lot to me."
Mingshen frowned. "That was just one part. Shopping is the second bonanza part."
"D-Do you mean to say there is a third part?"
He smirked. "Going to the gathering as your husband. I am sure your heart must be overjoyed with the thought of our future little couple act. No woman has gotten that privilege you know~"
Her brow twitched hard.
"Plus you cannot compare your expression of gratitude to mine. So our definitions of gift giving are very different. I am filthy rich. You are poor. It’s fine if you can afford a simple tie for me."
"..."
She held an urge to punch him in his face.
"But I can buy this whole shopping complex for you if I want without a sweat-" He abruptly stopped and sparkled like the brightest star.
"Am I so intelligent or what? I should buy this whole place for you! Why didn’t I think of this sooner?"
Jia puked blood. "What!?"
"It’s no biggie for me~ You are poor, I am not."
Her gaze darkened. "Mingshen, be serious! I won’t accept your thank you if you go so far! You want me to melt down under your debt?"
"Then accept today’s shopping," he shrugged.
"You...! Are you seriously bargaining with me?"
"Yup. Accept today’s shopping or accept this whole shopping mall."
Jia didn’t know where to bang her head. "F-Fine!"
He smirked. "Perfect."
They went back and he told the attendant to pack the ruby necklace set he chose. Jia now carried a second paper bag and the total weight of the dress and the jewelry felt like Mount Everest to her.
"Next is the shoe shop. Wait outside for me for a minute."
"This is going overboard-"
"You prefer the mall?" He smiled.
She gritted her teeth and huffed out in anger and defeat.
Mingshen lazily leaned his elbow against the glass panel below under which earring sets were kept. He eyed the attendant and asked, "Who is the manager here?"
The attendant sweated in fear. "I am extremely sorry, Dr. Yang. Did I make any mistake with my service?"
"It was perfect."
"T-Then why do you want to see my manager?"
"Not your manager. This mall’s manager."
He blinked in confusion. "You mean like the owner?"
"Yup."
"Yeah, I can surely get his details for you. B-But may I ask why?" He couldn’t hold his curiosity.
"I want to buy the mall."
The attendant coughed hard until he quenched his shock with two glasses of water.
"Calm down or you will get a stroke," he frowned.
How can I calm down when you said something so incredible!?
"I am sorry I heard your conversation with Mam but I thought you were joking."
He looked genuinely puzzled. "Why? You think I cannot afford this mall?"
"...The Yang family surely can," he coughed.
"Then what is the problem?"
"I didn’t get the sense that she is your girlfriend. I am sorry if I am mistaken."
"She is not my girlfriend though I know she will be thrilled if I ever ask her out," his nose grew long with pride.
Somehow, the attendant had a hard time thinking that Jia would say yes to him.
"Then isn’t buying out the whole mall for her too excessive if she is not close to you?"
"Oh, we are definitely close~" he smiled, "though our closeness equation falls out of the norm."
"So Mam is not your girlfriend but she is still somehow special to you and that’s why you want to buy the mall for her...?"
"No."
"Then?"
He smiled. "I want to buy the mall because I don’t want any shitty grey haired middle aged nosy woman or any other person for that matter to ever even utter to Spicy that shopping in this mall is out of her budget."
The attendant felt a sharp chill in his spine when he met Mingshen’s no-nonsense gaze.
So he had heard that conversation in that clothes store...
The attendant had too, when he was passing by them for some work.
"There is nothing in this world that is out of Spicy’s budget, got it?" He squinted his eyes.
"G-got it!"
"So the next time you see that old woman hovering around this mall, be sure to escort her out because by then, this mall will belong to Spicy and I, as a principle, don’t even entertain bratty patients, much less self-entitled customers," he chuckled evilly.
